Athena's POV:
"You don't know what a mate bond is?" He asked, his eyes scrutinizing. I flinched under the intensity of his voice.
"I don't." I replied calmly. "Is It supposed to mean anything to me?"
He groaned, rubbing his temples as he did. I recognized that pattern. It was how a man would behave whenever he didn't get the result he wanted. And now Tristan is acting like that.
I pulled my legs closer to my chest, leaning into the headrest. Tristan turned his sharp gaze to me.
"A mate bond," He started, taking in a deep breath, "it's a feeling inside you, when your wolf recognizes another wolf, in this instance, mine."
I didn't understand what he said. "My wolf should recognize yours? That's the mate bond?"
"Yes. When you find your mate, you feel it in your wolf."
"I don't..." I'm getting more and more confused.
"Are we mates?! Yes or no?!" He exploded, his voice ringing out through the air.
I stared at him, for a moment all I could hear was my ear ringing. I felt a pain in my chest, I always felt this way when the man yelled at me.
Tristan stared blankly at me. I heard him curse under his breath. "Well?" He asked, c*****g his head to the side.
"I don't feel anything." I said, gulping. "My wolf ....I can't feel my wolf. So I don't know if the mate bond is there or not."
"You have to be kidding me." Tristan gasped. "What does that even mean?!"
If my memory serves me well, the last time I wolfed out was when I was running from our killers. Seven years ago. I'm not even sure I have a wolf now, I can't hear her voice or feel her presence anymore.
And the harder I tried to feel it, the so called mate bond by staring at Tristan, the more my heart was racing.
In fear.
"My wolf is suppressed." I replied. I had heard a man say that once. Her wolf is suppressed, she can't do anything.
"Is that so?" Tristan said, nodding his head slowly. "I knew this was a waste of time."
He turned on his heel and headed to the door. I wanted to call out to him, explain even further, ask him why he was angry with me.
My voice wouldn't come out of my throat. He walked out, closing the door behind him. I sighed.
Why would he ask me about a mate bond? Does he feel one for me?
****
The next day came faster than I expected.
"Do you like it?" The pack doctor asked.
I met her eyes in the mirror and smiled. "Yes, thank you very much."
She had said I was okay enough to leave. I felt like it too, I felt stronger now. She gave me some clothes that didn't fit too well, and offered to braid my hair. It was a pretty style, my long white hair done in a braid that she wrapped into a bun.
I raised my hand and touched my hair. I looked better in the mirror, but my face was like that of a stranger. I didn't get to see my reflection a lot in the cell. The girl in the mirror stared back at me, her eyes wide and dark.
A knock sounded on the door. "Are you ready kid?" I heard a man's voice from outside.
I got to my feet and faced the door.
"You can come in." The pack doctor spoke.
The door opened and Cody walked in. He had a radiant smile on his face, and I felt bathed in the sun again.
"How are you feeling?" Cody asked.
"Much better, thank you." I was able to smile back. "Where is Alpha Tristan?"
Cody sighed. "He had some important meeting to attend. But don't worry, I'll take you to the pack house. Your room is ready "
I nodded. "Okay."
I followed him out of the hospital, waving goodbye to the doctor. I realized I didn't even ask her name.
Cody took me to the pack house. It was very lovely on the inside. He showed me to my room, and to my surprise it was decorated all in pink.
"It's pink..." I gasped. The curtains, the bed, even the furniture was pink
"You don't like it?
The sight before me was breathtaking. I was not sure I heard the question.
If you don't like it, I'll have someone change it." Cody said. “The alpha's sisters decorated the room, I guess they did it their way."
I felt a smile on my face. This was my own room, the first in a long time. It wasn't a cage, it wasn't a cold white cell. It was pink and girly and so sweet. "I love it."
Cody looked confused. "Oh, in that case, you can keep it."
I walked in and sat on the bed. It was nice, soft yet firm. This place was my new home.
"Later in the day, the girls will take you shopping for some clothes. Then you can ...."
I turned to him, the smile freezing on my face "I can't!" I cried out before I could stop myself. I realized I had just interrupted the Beta. I dropped to my knees, my hands clasped in front of me. "Forgive me, I didn't mean to interrupt you."
“Athena," He called sternly.
Oh dear goddess! What have I done?! Now he'll send me away!
"Get up." He said. "Why can't you go outside?"
I got to my feet. "They'll find me." My words were a whisper.
"Who are they?"
"The men. They'll find me. And they'll.... they'll take me back.”
