Chapter five

I lay there for what felt like hours, writhing in agony as the transformation wracked my body. When it finally subsided, I was left panting and sweating, but also feeling strangely…powerful. I looked down at my hands, and gasped in shock as I saw the fur and claws that had replaced my human features. I was a werewolf now, just like the others in the pack. Slowly, I pushed myself up to my feet and stumbled out of the barn, blinking in the bright sunlight. Everything seemed so different now, more vivid and alive than before. My senses were heightened, and I could smell things I had never noticed before. I wandered around the pack’s territory, taking in my new surroundings and trying to come to terms with what had happened to me. I had always thought werewolves were just a myth, a story to scare children. But now, I was one of them. As the days passed, I struggled to adjust to my new identity. I tried to avoid the other members of the pack as much as possible, still traumatized by what they had done to me. But Ethan sought me out, offering me kind words and gentle touches that made me feel a glimmer of hope in the midst of my despair. “You’re not like the others,” he told me one day, as we sat together by the edge of the forest. “You don’t belong here.” I looked up at him, a mix of fear and longing in my eyes. “Then why can’t I leave?” He hesitated for a moment, as if considering his words carefully. “It’s complicated,” he finally said. “But I promise you, Alice, I’ll do everything in my power to keep you safe.” I wanted to believe him, I really did. But I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was trapped, a prisoner in this place. And I didn’t know how to escape. The transformation was complete. I could feel the fur covering my body, the heightened senses and the new strength. I was no longer the same person. I had become something else entirely. It was both terrifying and exhilarating at the same time. I looked at Ethan, who was now standing beside me. He had a look of understanding in his eyes, as if he had been through the same thing before. “It’s alright,” he said softly, “You’ll get used to it. I promise.” I tried to speak, but all that came out was a growl. Ethan chuckled at my expression and patted my shoulder. “Let’s go, we have to meet with the alpha.” We made our way to the alpha’s quarters. As we walked, I noticed the other werewolves staring at me. I could tell that they could sense that I was different. Some of them looked at me with curiosity, while others with suspicion. It was clear that I had a long road ahead of me if I wanted to gain their trust. We reached the alpha’s quarters, and Ethan knocked on the door. The door opened, and we walked into the room. Gabriel was sitting on a large chair, his eyes trained on us as we approached. “Welcome back,” he said, his voice cold and distant. “Thank you, alpha,” Ethan replied, “I have brought Alice, as you requested.” Gabriel’s gaze shifted to me, and I could feel his eyes piercing through me. “So, you’re the new werewolf,” he said, “I hope you’re worth all the trouble.” I didn’t know what to say, so I simply nodded. Gabriel continued to stare at me for a moment, then turned his attention back to Ethan. “You may leave us now,” he said to Ethan, “I have some business to discuss with our new member.” Ethan gave me a reassuring look before nodding and leaving the room. I was left alone with Gabriel, who continued to stare at me with a cold expression. “So, Alice,” he said, “You’re now one of us. But don’t think for a second that you have any freedom here. You are still a slave, and you will do as I say.” I felt a knot form in my stomach at his words. I had hoped that being turned into a werewolf would give me some kind of power, but it seemed that I was still just a pawn in Gabriel’s game. Gabriel stood up from his chair and walked towards me. He leaned in close to my face, his breath hot on my skin. “And if you ever try to escape again,” he whispered, “I will make sure that you regret it.” With that, he turned and left the room, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I knew that I had to be careful from now on. Gabriel was not to be trifled with. But at the same time, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of defiance rising within me. I may be a slave, but I was still a werewolf, and that had to count for something. I took a deep breath and stood up, feeling the ground shake beneath my paws. The world looked different in this form – more vivid, more alive. I saw and smelled things I never would have noticed as a human. I let out a howl of amazement and joy, relishing the sound of my own voice. But as the excitement of my transformation wore off, I was hit with a wave of confusion and fear. What was I supposed to do now? How was I supposed to live as a werewolf? And more importantly, how was I supposed to live with myself after everything I had been through? I turned to Ethan, who was still watching me with a mixture of awe and concern. “What now?” I asked, my voice coming out in a growl. He took a step closer to me, his eyes never leaving mine. “Now, we learn how to live as wolves,” he said. “I’ll help you, Alice. I’ll teach you everything I know.” And just like that, I felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, I could find a way to survive in this new world. Maybe I could even find a way to be happy. But as I followed Ethan deeper into the forest, I couldn’t help but wonder – at what cost?
