chapter one: The shattered vows
I woke up to an unexpected surprise on our supposed anniversary. A solitary brown envelope lay on my bedside table, its presence both intriguing and ominous. My heart skipped a beat as I reached for it, wondering if it was another thoughtful gesture from Chase, a token of his love and devotion. Since our wedding six months ago, Chase had showered me with gifts and affection, making me feel cherished and adored. But as I extracted the letter from the envelope, my excitement turned to dismay. The brief, impersonal message informed me that our contractual marriage had come to an end. I felt a wave of sadness wash over me as I realized the envelope, once a symbol of hope, had become a harsh reminder of our fragile union. Tears welled up in my eyes as I contemplated the shattered dreams and broken promises scattered around me. I had believed our marriage had the potential to blossom into something real and lasting. But Chase's actions made it clear that, for him, it was nothing more than a business transaction. I thought to myself, "True love cannot be confined within the boundaries of a contract. It is a gift that is freely given and cannot be demanded or expected." I realized I deserved better than to be treated this way, especially after sacrificing so much for Chase's happiness. Determined to confront him, I headed to his office, my heart heavy with emotion. I demanded to know if he had any affection for me during our six months together even if we had a contractual marriage and I love him too deep for all this. His response cut deep: "No I don't I never love you not for once and now she's back, and I don't want to lose her anymore." "Who's back, Chase?" I demanded, my voice shaking with emotion. Chase's eyes darted around his office, avoiding mine. "Someone from my past," he muttered. I took a step closer, my heart pounding. "Who?" Chase's jaw clenched, his voice barely above a whisper. "Ava." "Ava?" I repeated, the name echoing in my mind. "Who's Ava?" Chase's gaze met mine, a mixture of guilt and longing. "Someone I thought I'd lost forever." I felt a chill run down my spine. "What does she have to do with us?" Chase's voice cracked. "She's the one I was supposed to marry. The one I loved before...before everything." My mind reeled. "You're leaving me for her?" Am not leaving you, our marriage was just based on contract. You know that Adriana, he said. "I never thought I'd have a second chance with her. But she's back, and I have to try." I stumbled backward, as if punched in the gut. "Try what? Erase our six months together?" Chase's face contorted in anguish. "Adriana, please understand—" I raised my hand, silencing him. "No, Chase. I don't want to hear it." Without a word, I left his office and called the butler to help me pack my belongings. As I drove out of the mansion, I felt a mix of emotions: sadness, anger, and betrayal tears streamed down my face, blurring the road ahead. I couldn't bear the thought of facing anyone, not even myself. I needed solitude, a refuge from the shattered remains of my marriage. I pulled over at the first quiet spot I found, a secluded parking lot overlooking the city. I shut off the engine and let the silence envelop me. The dam broke, and I sobbed uncontrollably, releasing all the pent-up emotions. My body shook, my heart aching with each ragged breath. I cried for the love that had been lost, for the future that would never be, and for the betrayal that cut deepest. Exhausted and drained, I finally gathered my composure. I started the car and continued driving, unsure of where to go or what to do next. With no destination in mind, I drove aimlessly, lost in thought. Eventually, I found myself in front of Hilltop Hotel, one of the city's most luxurious retreats. On a whim, I decided to book a room, hoping to find comfort in the luxurious isolation. I chose the presidential suite, hoping its grandeur would distract me from my pain. As I settled into the lavish space, I felt a fleeting sense of comfort. But the emptiness lingered, a constant reminder of all I'd lost. I collapsed onto the plush couch, surrounded by the silence of my new temporary sanctuary. The lavish decor and stunning view seemed hollow without someone to share it with. That's when I remembered Matilda, my best friend since college. Matilda, or Mattie as I affectionately called her, was more than just a friend. She was my confidante, my partner in crime, and my voice of reason. We had shared countless memories, from crazy nights out to heartfelt conversations. I picked up my phone and dialed her number. She answered on the first ring. "Hey, girl! How's life?" Mattie's bubbly voice was a balm to my frazzled nerves. I hesitated, unsure how to break the news. "Mattie, I need you. Meet me at Hilltop Hotel. I have a story to tell." Mattie's tone turned serious. "What's wrong, Adriana? You sound troubled." "Just get here, please," I said, fighting back tears. "On my way," Mattie replied, without hesitation. Within the hour, Mattie arrived, her curly brown hair and bright smile a beacon of hope. We hugged tightly, and I felt a lump form in my throat. "What happened?" Mattie asked, concern etched on her face. I took a deep breath and began my story. my voice trembling as I recounted the events of the past six months. Matilda listened intently, her expression shifting from concern to shock. "'Chase and I got married in a whirlwind ceremony,' I started. 'It was a contractual agreement, but I thought...I thought as time goes by, he will feel something real for me.' "Matilda's eyes widened. 'A contractual marriage? Why didn't you tell me?' "I shrugged, feeling a mix of emotions. 'I was embarrassed, I guess. And I thought it wouldn't matter, that love would conquer all.' "Matilda nodded sympathetically. 'What happened?' "I took another deep breath, the words spilling out. 'Chase said he's leaving me for someone else. Someone from his past.' "Matilda's face contorted in outrage. 'Who is she?' "'Ava,' I replied, the name bitter on my lips. "Matilda's expression softened. 'Oh, Adriana, I'm so sorry. You deserve so much better.' "I nodded, tears welling up again. 'I know. But it's hard to let go. I loved him, Mattie.' As Mattie wrapped her arms around me, offering comfort, I felt a sudden wave of nausea wash over me. My stomach churned, and I pulled away, covering my mouth. "Mattie, I think I'm going to be sick," I warned, rushing to the bathroom. Mattie followed close behind, holding my hair back as I leaned over the toilet. "Oh, Adriana, I'm so sorry. This is too much for one day." After the nausea passed, Mattie handed me a damp cloth and a glass of water. "Here, drink this. You're shaking." I took a sip, feeling embarrassed and overwhelmed. "I don't know what's wrong with me. I feel like my world is crashing down." Mattie's expression softened. "You're in shock, that's all. It's a lot to process." As I splashed water on my face, Mattie's words echoed in my mind. Was this really just shock? Or was something more going on?
