Sleepless nights have become the new normal since I moved to Illinois. I was raised in Greensboro, NC even that dulled in comparison to the fast paced lives here. I enjoy the train more than most. As the 3 am train whizzed and shook the ground I opened my fridge to grab creamer for my coffee. Sleep was becoming an alien to the body it used to call home. I would kill for a good nights sleep or even a nap. My apartment was close to the train which I thoroughly enjoyed. I loved the white noise the city provided. To others it was loud and annoying, but I beg to differ. The city simply loved to speak to anyone who would listen. To the wrong audience it sounds like ruckus, but I knew it was more than that. Being alone was one thing, but being alone in silence... I couldn't stand it. Pouring a health amount of caramel macchiato non dairy creamer into my coffee mug I watched the color lighten. I knew the right mouth of creamer based on the color. Stirring the coffee, I made my way from my small kitchen to the living room. I plopped down with a sigh while turning the tv on. The TV filled my apartment with much needed noise. Flicking through channels until a movie caught my eye. I pulled my legs onto the couch while I sipped my coffee. My mind drifted somewhere between the movie and random thoughts until my phone pulled me from my circus of a mind. Setting my coffee on the table I pulled my work phone to my ear. "Erins Electric", I answered. Pulling the phone away I double checked the time. 3:17am. "Hello, Im sorry for the early call, but you're the only place who answered that has emergency services", the man sounded strained. "You are fine, how can I help?", I sipped my coffee. There was a lot of background noise and yelling on his end. This must be urgent I stood making my way to my room to get dressed. "Our power went out, which took most of our security systems with it, its urgent that we have it back up and running as soon as possible",He rushed out. "Ok, Where are you located and there is a before hours service fee of $200 dollars. Were you able to look at my rates?", I pulled on a black t-shirt and pair of overalls. I grabbed my AirPods to free my hands. "Yes, we will pay all fees and a gratuity if you can be here within the hour", the man stated. "Ok, please text me your address and I will send you an ETA. "Thank you", he cut the call. Sitting on the bed I finished my coffee before I pulled on my socks and steel toe work boots. Happy I brought the truck home yesterday I brushed my teeth before heading out. I plugged the address in my GPS and the ETA was 34 minutes. My truck was parked down the street in a parking garage. I did a lot of things but trusting was not one. My truck and tools would be stolen the moment I left in street parking. I texted my ETA to the man Siri suggested as Luis. Adult ADHD had me in a choke hold. I forgot to ask his name. Hello Luis, my eta is 34 minutes. My name is Erin. Followed by a second text. If your name is not Luis I'm sorry... Siri suggested it. His reply was quick as if waiting for my reply. Perfect, si it is. I clicked the button on the garage and backed out of the garage. If anyone asked I would never admit it but I have a problem with speeding. I was happy to beat the morning traffic. Which allowed me to drive fast. I arrived 10 minutes earlier than anticipated. This was an estate! My jaw was scraping the ground as I pulled through the open gate. Two men eyed my truck with guns strapped to them. My stomach turning at the sight of so many handsome men with guns. Was it flipping because of the guns or my inner teenage mind ? I have no idea. I parked my truck in front of the house and made my way to the back to grab my tool belt. Unlocking the tool box I removed my belt and locked it on my waist line. I could return for anything I needed after inspecting the issue. I made my way to the stairs and was met by three men. Again all extremely handsome, tanned, and muscular might I add. My mouth was salivating... I will blame it on my coffee breakfast instead of food. "Hello, Im Erin what seems to be the issue?", I looked at the man I presumed to be Luis. "I assumed you were the receptionist not the electrician my apologies", the man smirked. " No worries, most people do but I can ensure you I am more than qualified", I placed my hand on my hip eyeing the man in front of me. "With your name on the truck I would only hope so" He smiled "For your sake", he mumbled the last part. "Excuse me", my brows furrowed. "Please follow me", he turned and I followed him. The other two men falling into step behind me. I listened to Luis as he told me the issue with their power and led me to the circuits. The mansion was blacked out and there were a lot of people inside with flash lights. Once at the circuit breaker I got to work checking for the cause of the problem. Luis excused himself and left me with one man who he called Garcia. Finding nothing here I asked Garcia to show me to the outside power meter. I quickly established they did have power running from the outer lines. This was weird but I wasn't going to call Luis and his smart ass mouth back without a reason. Back inside I tested a few outlets before removing them and placing a camera snake in the walls. I found the issue shortly after. Alex I pulled into the estate to find my men on high alert. Hopping out the car Luis was at my side immediately. "¿Qué diablos está pasando?", I waited for Luis to tell me what happened. "La energía se cortó de repente", he kept up as we walked into the house, "Tengo a alguien buscando ahora ". I stopped. "Fransisco?", I thought he was out of the country. "No, He's with his familia in Mexico", he scratched his head, "I hired someone to come and fix it". "Since when do we allow outsiders to come in our operations?!", My face was heating up. "With what alternative?! Leave our defense down! This is no coincidence the girl said there is no outage." He looked at me knowing I would get what he was implying. Someone sabotaged our power and they would try to make a move soon with our security systems down. "How many men are here?", I looked around the dark living area. "50 or so, we have more coming but they all have different etas", he pulled out his phone. One of the men probably. The power flickered as we spoke. "Where is he?", I watched as the lights turned on in the kitchen and living room, but the halls were still down. "She is in the breaker room", we walked to the breaker room. As we stepped in it was quiet. No one was here... "Luis tell me this random girl is not walking around without someone!", I was starting to get on edge. "No, Pablo is with her", he picked up his phone to call Pablo. The phone rang with no answer. I pulled my gun from it holster and we split to find Pablo and the girl. Being a mafia boss came with a lot of responsibilities and keeping my men safe was top tier. Women were more than capable of taking out men. Men do not expect women to be a threat which makes them the perfect weapons. I took walked around listening to my ear piece as the men cleared the rooms in the house one by one. I was heading straight for my office, the place most spy's would go. Not to my surprise the door was ajar. My men knew better than to enter without permission. I slipped through the space, but didn't see her. "Got it!", there was an excited squeal before a thump and groan. She crawled from behind my desk and turned towards the wall. A device in her hand she pulled something and the power came on in the office. I quickly made my way to her and she turned just as I was going to place the gun to the back of her head. Her forehead and my gun were less than an inch apart. "What the hell are you doing?", she raised her hands in a surrender stance. "I could ask you the same thing", I squinted my eyes to her. "My job you lunatic", She looked confused. "And sniffing around my office is your job!", I coked the gun, "Who sent you!". Luis was now in the room trying to figure out what was happening. I looked back at him in disbelief. He let a spy in. Erin He turned around and I took the opportunity to get this gun out of my face. I used a move I learned in combat training classes my father places me in to quickly flip the gun so it was now in my hands. He was a very paranoid man and until now I have never needed the skills learned. The gun was now on him and s other men came in their guns aimed at me. Except Luis who looked horrified at the situation. "What the hell is going on Luis!", my jaw was tight and I was on high alert. "This is a misunderstanding", he replied coming closer. "Another step and ill shoot your little friend here", I wasn't bluffing because clearly neither were they. "You all might kill me but I'm taking this one with me... He seems important to you all". "He thinks you're a spy just lower the gun Erin", he reasons. "No, your men first I'm not stupid", I rolled my eyes, I knew something was sketchy here but not this bad. I found your issue as you can tell by the lights". I grabbed some of the small devices from the bucket by my feet throwing it at the man who previously held the gun in my hands. "Someone put these on your wires to make the power go out, I removed a few wire taps as well". They looked at each other with tight jaws. "I was going to do it on the house because I'm a good person but you'll be getting a full bill in a hour or two and I'm done here. Have someone else finish". I grabbed my camera and tools that didn't go on my belt before placing the gun on the table and exiting the office. My heart was racing from anger and fear. Ive never had a gun held to my head and if it warns for my dad I would have been a crying mess in that situation. I loaded all of my equipment into the back and removed my belt before locking the tool box. Quickly going to the door of my truck to get away. I was not quick enough clearly. The man who was clearly in charge stood in my path. "We are paying you, you need to finish the job you are being paid to do". His jaw clenched as he spoke. I rolled my eyes stepping forward. "You just held a gun to my head! Kiss my ass and I expect my money!" I rammed my shoulder into his body causing him to take a few steps back. All I needed to open my truck door and squeeze in. I locked the door before starting my truck. Not looking back as I sped off
