(Esther's Point of View) The doors of the lift opened too quietly. I was the first to get out. My legs were stiff, and my chest felt tight, like something heavy was on it. The hallway smelt fresh, like nothing bad had ever happened there. That made things worse. Bad things never make noise before they happen. They come soft. Matthew stayed close by. Not touching. So close that I could feel his warmth. Elliot walked ahead, his steps quick and his shoulders tight. I said again, "They know about the storage unit," as if saying it twice would make it less real.
