BLURB:

I never thought my life would change because of a contract. But here I am, stuck in a marriage that isn’t really a marriage.

Matthew King is a billionaire, cold, powerful, and hiding deep scars. He’s not the kind of man I ever thought I’d get close to, let alone marry. I thought this was just a business deal. No feelings, no love. But the more I’m around him, the more I realize I’m getting tangled in his world, and I don’t know if I’ll ever escape.

What happens when a contract marriage turns into something more? Can I break through his walls, or will I be left behind, just another thing he can’t trust?

The deeper I fall for him, the harder it gets to tell if this is real or just a game.

Will Matthew ever let me in, or am I just another business deal to him?

Chapter 1: A Deal with a Billionaire
(Esther's Point of View) I never imagined this would happen to me. It was just a regular Thursday morning, and yet, in the span of a single phone call, my life took a turn I didn’t see coming. I sat at my desk, the soft hum of the office filling the air, the clicking of keyboards blending into the usual office noise. But this time, it felt different. I could barely focus on the screen in front of me. My phone buzzed—a reminder for an interview I had scheduled for later in the day. Not that I was expecting much to come out of it. "Esther, your 10 AM client is here," my assistant, Tara, called out from the doorway, interrupting my thoughts. "Thanks," I murmured, not looking up. I was too busy battling the knot in my stomach. My job at the small marketing firm didn’t bring in much. Bills piled up, and I was barely holding on. But I always tried to keep my head up, to stay hopeful. After all, things could only go up from here, right? The door swung open, and in walked the last person I expected to see today. Matthew King. I froze. The man who dominated headlines with his ruthless business deals and icy persona was standing right in front of me, looking as if he owned the entire building—and probably the city too. Tall, dark hair neatly styled, a sharply cut suit that made him look like a million bucks, and those eyes—those piercing, cold eyes that seemed to see right through you. "Miss Bennett, I assume?" His voice was deep, controlled. Too controlled. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to stand. "Y-Yes, Mr. King," I stammered, offering a stiff handshake that felt like a lifetime in my clammy palms. Matthew didn’t react. His grip was firm, professional, but there was no warmth in it. Nothing to suggest this was anything more than a business transaction. He glanced around the office, his gaze cold and calculating. I could feel his eyes assessing the space, the people, even me. "I trust this won’t take long. I have a very tight schedule," he said, his tone clipped, almost dismissive. "Of course," I said, my heart racing. He wasn’t here for a casual chat. Something told me he wasn’t here for any reason I could imagine. I gestured to the empty chair across from me. "Please, take a seat." He did, lowering himself into the chair with the kind of confidence that came only with years of getting exactly what you wanted. It made me uncomfortable. Not the kind of uncomfortable that makes you fidget, but the kind that makes your chest tighten, like you’re a pawn in someone else’s game and you don’t even know the rules. "Miss Bennett," he began, his sharp eyes locking onto mine, "I need your help." I blinked. My breath caught in my throat. This was unexpected. "Help?" I repeated, trying to steady my voice. He nodded, tapping a folder onto the desk. His movements were slow, deliberate. "Yes, a business proposition." He opened the folder, revealing documents I couldn’t quite make out from my angle. I glanced at him, trying to make sense of what he was saying. "I’m not sure I understand... what kind of proposition?" His lips curled into a small, cold smile. "A contract." A contract? I blinked again, trying to process the words. "I’m not sure what you mean." Matthew leaned forward slightly, his hands clasped on the desk. His gaze didn’t falter, didn’t soften. "I need you to marry me." I froze, the words hanging in the air like a heavy fog. "Excuse me?" I whispered, unsure if I had heard correctly. "Marry me," he repeated, unfazed. "You see, I have a business deal to finalize, and my... family expects me to be married. For appearances. For their peace of mind." I stared at him, unable to believe what I was hearing. "But... why me?" "Because you’re a perfect candidate," Matthew said, his voice smooth, like he was stating a fact that made complete sense. "You’re not in the public eye. You don’t have any scandals tied to your name. You’re... professional." I felt the sting of his words, the sharpness of his assessment. He was looking at me like I was some kind of object he could use. I didn’t know what to say. My mind raced, searching for a way to process this, to make it make sense. "You... want to marry me... for a business deal?" He nodded. "Correct. It’s a business arrangement. Nothing personal." Nothing personal. It was like a punch to the gut. I should have said no. I should have walked out of that office, slammed the door in his face, and never looked back. But I didn’t. The words got stuck in my throat, the weight of my financial troubles pressing down on me like an anchor pulling me deeper. I looked away, trying to gather my thoughts. "And if I refuse?" I finally asked, my voice barely above a whisper. Matthew’s expression remained unchanged. "Then I find someone else. But I think you’ll find the offer... quite generous." He slid a piece of paper across the desk. I hesitated, but the temptation was too strong. I took the paper, unfolded it, and my eyes widened at the numbers staring back at me. The offer was beyond anything I’d ever seen in my life. A huge salary. A lavish lifestyle. A house. A future that most people could only dream of. I looked up at him, unable to mask my disbelief. "And you expect me to just... agree to this?" Matthew leaned back in his chair, watching me with a detached interest. "Yes. It’s a straightforward arrangement, Miss Bennett. We get what we need. You get what you want." I felt trapped. The numbers on the paper danced in front of my eyes, mocking me, offering me everything I’d ever dreamed of. All I had to do was say yes. But my heart... my heart was telling me something else. I stood up abruptly, pushing the chair back with a sharp scrape against the floor. "I can’t." Matthew didn’t move. He didn’t flinch. "You will." His voice was so confident, so certain. It unsettled me. I backed away from the desk, my heart pounding in my chest. "I don’t know what you think I am, but I’m not some... some contract bride!" Matthew’s eyes darkened, and he stood up slowly. His presence filled the room, overwhelming and impossible to ignore. "You don’t have to be," he said, his voice now low and commanding. "But you will marry me. It’s not a choice, Esther." I froze. My breath caught in my throat. The force in his words was undeniable. But then, as if sensing the tension in the room shift, he added, "I’ll give you time to think about it." I nodded numbly, my mind spinning. I didn’t know what to say, what to do. The offer was too tempting, yet everything in me screamed to say no. As I turned to leave, I could feel his eyes on me, following my every step. Just before I reached the door, I glanced back at him one last time. "Think carefully, Esther," he said softly. "Your life will never be the same again." The door clicked shut behind me, but I couldn’t escape the feeling that I had just walked into a trap, one I wasn’t sure I could get out of. Would I say yes? Or would I walk away, leaving the billionaire—and his dangerous proposal—behind? But as I stood there, frozen in the hallway, I realized that I might already be too far gone. Would I be able to turn back?
