(Matthew’s Point of View)
The door closed behind me with a sound that echoed through the quiet hallway of the prison. I was no stranger to bad news, and the sharp click of the door only served as a reminder that whatever came next, there was no turning back. The silence, thick and suffocating, pressed down on me, heavier than any chain or lock.
I glanced toward the guard, who had stepped in to lead me to my new destination. There were no words exchanged. There didn’t need to be. We both knew the reality of my situation. The heaviness of it hung between us like a dark cloud.
“You’re being moved,” the guard said. His voice was flat, void of any emotion.
“Moved where?” I asked, my voice a little rough, though I wasn’t sure why.
