The elevator seemed to be moving too slowly.
Every second felt like it was trying to punish me. The lights above my head were bright, but the inside of my chest was dark. Matthew was quiet next to me, with his hands in his pockets. He looked calm, but I never fell for it again.
The doors opened when the elevator rang.
There was a long hallway ahead of us. A lot of carpet. Lights that are soft. It looked safe on the outside, but who knew what was going on inside?
First, Matthew stepped out.
I followed, my fingers tightly gripping the strap of my bag.
"You didn't tell me where we were going," I said.
He kept on going. "I didn't want you to freak out."
