Chapter 4

"Jason?" Jason spun his chair and turned to face Lucid who was standing across his table. Lucid wore a relieving smile as he proceeded and dropped his tablet on the table. Lucid is the closest person to Jason and the Managing Director of Dafferson Empire. In his early 30s, Lucid has a sharp intellect and a calm demeanor that complements Jason's more domineering personality. With his tousled dark hair and keen blue eyes, he possesses an approachable charm, often serving as the voice of reason in their long-standing friendship. Lucid is fiercely loyal to Jason, and always willing to support him in both professional and personal challenges, and it could be the reason why he was the only friend to Jason, he knew how to handle and endure him more than anyone else. "What? Why are you smiling? Read out my schedules already" Jason commanded, feigning a frown distorting Lucid's train of thoughts. Lucid shook his head as he took a step closer to him. "No, you won't be using that this morning. We have something more important to discuss this morning" Jason furrowed his brows in confusion, wondering what was suddenly wrong with him. Lucid chuckled, enjoying the serious expression on Jason's face. "By the way, I didn't think you will come to work this early. Didn't you have a steamy night yesterday? Tell me about it" He let out a frustrating sigh, rolling his eyes away. "Get to the point, Lucid. What do you want?" He rose to his feet, distracting Lucid from responding. He stood by his window, holding his mug of coffee that was almost getting cold. "If you're here to request for another leave, I disapprove of it" Lucid chuckled and took more bold steps closer to him. He was just a step away from Jason. He bent forward and whispered to his ears. "Why? Are you scared of missing me so much?" Jason's cringe expression made Lucid laugh so much. "Not to worry, Mr Jason, this is not about me. This is about you" Jason dropped the mug on the table, looking very interested in the conversation. "What about me?" "I've been looking into Damon your uncle for a while and I realized --" "He's still looking for whatever he can use to take me down" Lucid wore a surprising expression. "You're aware of that? Then why are you not doing anything about it?" He walked closer to Jason so that he could feel his breath and turned around to see if anyone was sneaking in or eavesdropping. "Your health is deteriorating, Jason. I consulted the Hospital and they said if you do not come for check-up, it will get so worst that they will be left with no choice but to admit you" Jason turned sharply to him. His expression was masked with a bit of worry and shock. "I can't go to the hospital, Lucid! Especially not when we have the Investors from Japan coming in, I can't get distracted with that and besides, Damon is still snooping around. You know how that risky is" Lucid sighed and took a step back. The conversation was going just as he expected. "It's high time you begin to worry about yourself, Jay. You know the worst thing that can happen to you now? It's you breaking down before Damon Dafferson" "It's just Insomnia!" Jason retorted. "Insomnia is only a symptom of what is happening to you. If we do not deal with the roots now you will be--" "I know you have a solution already, cut this crap and proceed to it" Lucid smiled satisfactorily as he adjusted his suit. "You see Mr Jason, I understand how risky and tasking it can be to visit the hospital for appointments and all sorts. If any Journalist or Reporter were to bump into you at the hospital, they will become a Millionaire by night because it will make a trendy news" Jason sighed, turning his head in frustration. "Get to the point already" Lucid adjusted his posture, placing his both hands on his thighs "I decided to look for Psychologists in a Job listing website" "Job listing what?" "You must not know about it since you are Jason but yeah, a lot of people from different works of life are easily hired these days" he responded sarcastically. But Jason didn't find it funny. "Fine, let's say you found a good Psychologist, what's the possibility that this will be kept a secret?" At this point, Lucid was already feeling ticklish. Everything was going just as planned! "Exactly what I thought but not to worry, I found someone: zero reviews, zero clients but has a degree" Jason's jaw dropped. "Lucid!" "Come on, Mr Jason, which would you prefer; an experienced and influential Doctor or one with no apparent experience that we can trust to keep her mouth shut...." "We are talking about my health here!" Jason yelled, clenching his fist tightly. "We are also talking about your reputation, sir. Think about it" he suggested in a calm tone. Jason sighed as he sank into his chair. "Look, I understand this is a tough decision but we gotta do what we can. Besides, we can always call it quits if this doesn't work out" "What's the plan?" "It's simple, employ her as an in-house Psychologist and a contractual fiancee. Let's say 3 months?" Lucid sighed at Jason's silence. "Look, I'm aware of your dislikes for strangers especially women but we have to do this, at least to make Damon less curious" Jason nodded, signifying his approval. "Fine, 90 days sounds fair. I can endure that much" "Yes! I've got the contract ready and the Psychologist" "The...?" "Come in" Lucid shouted, his eyes fixed on Jason with a warm smile. Emily took a deep breath at the door and walked into the office with her head bowed. "You can do this, yes you can" she muttered to herself. "Good day sir" she greeted and finally lifted up her head. "You?!" They both echoed.
