AZRIEN’S POV I stood in the doorway of her room, my hands tightening into fists. Empty. Her room was empty. The bed where she had been lying last night was cold and empty of her. Her scent still lingered faintly in the air, but she was gone. I felt shame and disappointment crash over me from head to toe as I realized what I'd done. I had broken my word to her. I’d promised Elisa I would stay here all night, that she would wake to find me still standing guard, that I would watch over her while she slept. And I meant it. I meant every word of what I said to her. But something had pulled me away, something I couldn’t ignore. I had told myself it would only be for a moment. I’d be gone and back before she stirred, before she ever noticed. But the world doesn’t care for the plans of gods
