Chapter 4

Lyra’s Pov "Miss Lyra, congratulations! Our new design is the best seller this month," my secretary said with her usual smile. "I expected nothing less," I replied quietly, keeping my eyes on my laptop screen. Even though our last design did really well, I wasn't going to relax or celebrate like Joan wanted me to. I needed to make plenty of money to give my pups the great life they deserve. "Miss Lyra, should we go ahead with the contract talks with Alpha Silas? Your friend mentioned he is your ex-husband," my secretary added. Her words brought a small, sad smile to my face as I tried to ignore the painful memories I had buried long ago. To me, Silas is dead. Since the contract offered to pay me double for a simple collection, I didn't care about anything else. My only goal was to make money. "Go ahead with the negotiations. I want this deal finished before the end of the week," I said calmly. "Also, when will my pups be back?" I asked. I had been staring at my office door for ages, waiting for them to return. If my secretary hadn't convinced me to let them hang out with their friend, I never would have allowed it. "They should be—" "They better be back within the hour, or I'll go get them myself," I interrupted, looking back at my computer screen. "I will make sure of that, ma'am," my secretary replied. I finally felt my concentration back on the design I was trying to come up with the moment she left my office. I tried not to think of Alpha Silas but with him being my next client, the unease and all, I couldn't imagine how I was going to face him... it's been five whole years since he chose Iris over me. "Becky, what moon goddess do you want again?" I asked loudly the moment my door opened with even a knock, my heart almost jumping out. "Lyra, always working; can't you give yourself some free time, or even spend quality time with your little smarties," Joan's voice echoed, making me raise my gaze. I quickly stood up before rushing up to her. It's been a year since we last met, but it felt like ten years. "I thought you forgot about me!" I said, hugging her tightly as if I might lose her forever. "Selene, you look so beautiful and radiant. Just look at you!" "Look who's talking about being beautiful!" Joan replied, quickly pulling back to look at me. "Look at your smooth skin and your perfect body, any man would die for you. You honestly look like a gorgeous supermodel, you know?" "Selene, stop exaggerating," I said, trying my best not to laugh out loud at her compliments. Everything she said felt like a major overstatement. "See for yourself," Selene insisted. Refusing to lose the argument, she pulled a mirror out of her purse and handed it to me. I hesitated for a moment before taking it. Looking into it, I realized that for years now, I had stopped staring into mirrors because it always reminded me of how I used to look. I looked at my reflection. My face was clear and beautiful, even without a bit of makeup, and my skin practically glowed. Although my body and face had clearly changed for the better after finally getting treatment for my fibroid, I was still shocked by the stunning person looking back at me. "See? I told you I wasn't exaggerating," Joan said, taking the mirror back before sitting down. I laughed quietly at her playful behavior. She hadn't changed a bit. "Lyra, I heard you're planning to work with that jerk. Are you serious, especially after everything he put you through?" I took a deep breath, really not looking forward to having this talk. "It's just business," I replied. "You know I never let my personal feelings get in the way of my job. Besides, he has no idea that I'm actually the jeweler he's trying to hire.” "Lyra, did you hear what you just said? I'm sorry, but that sounds completely foolish," Joan said, causing me to bite my lip. I usually can't stand being insulted, but this was Joan. She meant everything to me—she was my sister, my best friend, and my family all in one. "I need the money—" "That's no excuse!" Selene interrupted. "You have money now. You've worked non-stop for five years to build this life and become a top jeweler, just to crawl right back to him?" Her question stung. She was right about everything except the part about crawling back. I had completely erased Silas from my life. To me, he was long dead, just like his family, who always took everything from me and turned their backs on me. "Selene, I—" Suddenly, the door burst open. "Miss Lyra! Your pups were just in an accident on their way back!" my secretary gasped. "Whose pups?!" I demanded. My eyes widened in pure terror, unable to even let her finish her sentence. She couldn't possibly mean my kids! No... "I...—" "Yes, they are—" "No! No! No—" "Lyra, let me drive," Selene said, grabbing the car keys from my hand. We got into the car, and she quickly started the engine and sped off as fast as she could. "Try to relax, nothing is going to happen to your smart little ones." The hospital was located right on the border between our pack territory and the neighboring one. The entire way there, I frantically prayed to the Moon Goddess that my pups would be okay. "I need to see the doctor in charge right now!" I screamed the second I burst through the hospital doors. "I said, let me see the doctor!" "Ma'am, please calm down. I am the doctor—" "Where are my pups? Where are they?!" I yelled over him, tears pouring down my face. The doctor fell completely silent for a few agonizing seconds, which made my stomach tie itself in knots. Nothing could happen to either of them! "One of your pups only has minor injuries and a slight concussion," the doctor explained. "However, your other child, your boy, is severely injured." Hearing his words, my legs gave out, and I collapsed to the floor. "Ma'am, this is no time to break down," the doctor urged. "We have been searching for a matching blood type so we can start his surgery, but we haven't been able to find one anywhere." "What do you mean, doctor?" Selene demanded before I even could find my voice. "Your son has an incredibly rare Alpha blood type," he replied. "The only person I know who shares that specific blood type is Alpha Lucian of the Blood Crest pack." His words felt like a cruel joke. What about the pups' actual father?! "He is dead!" I screamed out in my mind. I had been doing completely fine on my own for the last five years, and so had Silas. The absolute last thing I ever wanted to do was crawl back to him... especially not like this. "We only have 48 hours to find the blood, or we risk losing your child," the doctor added before walking away. Selene took my hands in hers, holding them gently and looking into my eyes. "You don't have a choice this time, Lyra. You have to go see Silas. All that matters is that he comes to save his son." "He called my babies bastards! He literally wanted them dead!" I screamed. "I will track down that other Alpha with the matching blood type. I will do absolutely anything else, but I am not going to Silas." "To me, he died five years ago.”
