The Roommate Rule
Chapter 1: Flat 7B
Victor Dlamini was 35. Alpha. Lecturer in Architecture. Respected. Feared. The kind of man students moved out of the way for in the hallway.
He lived alone. He liked it that way.
"The pipes burst, Dr. Dlamini," the warden said. "One month. Flat 7B. It's the only bed left on campus."
"I don't share," Victor said.
"It's a Beta, Dr. Dlamini. 23. Masters Lit. Quiet. He signed the form. He doesn't want you there either."
Flat 7B was small. Two single beds with a desk between them like a border. One closet. One rule taped to the wall in red: ALPHA/OMEGA COHABITATION PROHIBITED DURING HEAT SEASON — BY ORDER.
It smelled like cleaning chemicals. Like someone trying to erase scent.
Sam Khumalo was on the far bed, as far as possible from the empty one. 23, small, in a huge grey hoodie, three thick scent blockers stacked on his thin neck. He didn't stand up. He didn't smile.
"You're the lecturer," he said. Not a question. Accusatory.
"And you're the Beta who took my privacy," Victor said.
Silence. Wary. Cold.
Sam pulled his hoodie tighter. "I told them I don't share. I have allergies. I need blockers. I need air."
Victor put his bag down hard. "I have lectures at 6am. I grade till midnight. I don't like noise. I don't like people touching my things."
"Good. I don't touch things," Sam mumbled, looking away.
First night: War.
Victor worked at the desk, light on. Sam tried to sleep but kept coughing — fake coughing because of Victor's Alpha scent filling the tiny room. Victor was an ordinary Alpha, but his scent was strong: cedar, black coffee. It was everywhere.
"Can you... can you open a window?" Sam whispered at 11pm. "Your scent... it's strong."
Victor, tired, snapped a little: "This is an Alpha residence building. Alphas have scent. Betas don't complain about scent."
Sam flinched. "I'm... I'm sensitive."
Victor felt bad immediately. He was 12 years older. He should be more mature. He opened the window, even though it was cold.
"Sorry," he said.
Sam didn't answer.
Day 2: Same war. Victor made coffee, black. Sam made instant noodles, eating with his back to Victor. Neither spoke. Sam kept his blockers on even while sleeping. Victor noticed — Betas don't need blockers to sleep. Only Omegas hiding heats, or something else, do.
Victor was protective by nature. He wanted to ask "Are you okay with those on all night? Your skin will hurt." But Sam's body language said don't talk to me. So Victor stayed quiet and just left the window cracked.
Day 3: Small crack.
Victor came back late from grading. Sam was asleep, curled tight, hoodie over his head. One of his blockers had fallen off in his sleep.
Victor froze at the door.
For half a second, the room did not smell like chemicals. It smelled like warm rain. Like sweet skin. Like something powerful but soft. Not Alpha. Not Omega. Not Beta. Something that made Victor's ordinary Alpha instincts stand up and go mine — protect.
Then Sam whimpered in his sleep and slapped the blocker back on, panicked, even while half-asleep. He woke up, saw Victor staring.
"You saw nothing," Sam said quickly, voice shaking. Possessive even in fear. "You smell nothing. This is my room too. Don't tell anyone I... my blockers fell."
Victor was 35. He knew how to keep secrets. He knew what it meant to hide a gender to survive university.
He lifted his hands. "I saw nothing," he said quietly. "But Sam — if you need to... if your blockers hurt, you can... this room is locked. Only me here. I won't tell."
Sam stared at him, wary, but for the first time not cold. Just scared.
"No," Sam whispered. "Not yet. I don't know you yet."
Victor nodded. "Okay. Not yet."
He went to his bed. But that night, neither of them slept well. Sam because he almost got caught. Victor because he finally understood — the quiet Beta boy with allergies was hiding a gender. And whatever it was, Victor was already protective of it.
