Blurb

He was cold. She was fire.

He pushed. She fought back.

They were never supposed to happen.

But fate has never cared about supposed to.

Between stolen glances and sharp words,

between midnight collisions and accidental touches —

something dark and sweet and dangerous

slowly began to poison them both.

And the worst part?

Neither of them wanted the antidote.

Let’s fall together. 💕 --- ⏳ CHAPTER 1: THE CEDARWOOD CHAOS "s**t!" Hazel shot upright in bed, her heart hammering against her ribs as her eyes locked onto the digital clock glowing on her nightstand. Her first day of college, and she was already catastrophically late. "This stupid alarm!" she groaned, throwing the duvet off and scrambling out of bed. "Why didn't you go off?!" Right on cue, her phone buzzed, vibrating violently against the wood. Rebecca was calling nonstop for the last thirty minutes. If Hazel didn’t show up in the next ten minutes, her best friend would personally make sure she never heard the end of it for the rest of our academic lives. Snatching her bag and grabbing her car keys in a frantic rush, Hazel practically flew out the front door. The drive to campus was something straight out of a Fast & Furious movie. She swerved through lanes, muttered curses under her breath, and swore that every single red light was a targeted personal attack from the universe. When the college gates finally materialized through her windshield, a massive, breathless sigh of relief escaped her lips. Thank God. I’m not too late. The second her sneakers hit the campus pavement, a whirlwind caught up to her. Rebecca was already storming forward, her arms tightly crossed over her chest and an expression on her face that could genuinely kill a man. "There you are!" Rebecca hissed. "I’m sorry! I'm so sorry!" Hazel quickly threw her hands up in mock surrender, offering an apologetic wince. "I swear I tried to be on time. My alarm utterly betrayed me." Rebecca narrowed her eyes, completely unimpressed. "Hazel, I have been standing here calling you for thirty straight minutes." "I know, I know," Hazel pleaded, quickly flashing her brightest, most dazzling smile—the exact one that usually got her out of trouble since they were kids. It worked, mostly. Rebecca stared at her for a long, agonizing moment before letting out a dramatic sigh and rolling her eyes. "You are absolutely impossible." Hazel grinned, hooking her arm through hers. And just like that, her college life officially began. --- A few buildings away, Ethan Vance was already in his element. He was always early. Always punctual. Chaos was an enemy he preferred to avoid at all costs. He sat rigidly in his usual chair near the front of the lecture hall, his eyes locked onto the pristine, blank chalkboard. Around him, the room was slowly filling up, and the mounting, chaotic buzz of student chatter was already beginning to drill a sharp, throbbing headache right behind his temples. Pressing his palms firmly against his face, Ethan closed his eyes and exhaled a low, desperate prayer into the quiet safety of his hands: God, just let me vanish from here. His internal plea was instantly shattered by a burst of loud, utterly careless laughter tearing through the room. Ethan’s brows furrowed in immediate irritation. Two girls had just walked into the hall, chatting and giggling as if they owned the entire building, completely oblivious to the fact that they were disrupting the peace. Snapping his eyes open in pure annoyance, Ethan turned his head to glare. But his gaze stopped dead. Standing in the aisle was a girl who practically radiated pure, unfiltered energy. She was wearing a vibrant, knee-length yellow dress that was practically impossible to look away from. Her long, hazel-brown hair fell in perfect, silky waves all the way down to her waist. And when she laughed, her striking blue eyes sparkled with a warmth that completely clashed with the cold, sterile mood of the classroom, framing a brilliant, infectious smile. For a split, microscopic second, Ethan found himself entirely distracted. Then, reality caught up, and his annoyance flared right back up to the surface. "Can you be quieter?" Ethan barked, his sharp voice slicing cleanly through their laughter. "There are actually other people in this room besides you two." The entire lecture hall went dead silent. Hazel's vibrant smile froze instantly. --- "Who was that jerk?" Hazel muttered under her breath the moment she and Rebecca got a few feet away, her face burning with embarrassment. "And okay, fine—he’s gorgeous, but that doesn't give him the right to act like he owns the entire place! We weren't even that loud… were we?" Rebecca let out a guilty little squeak, hiding her face. "Babe… we absolutely were." Hazel groaned internally. She hated that her friend was right, but she hated him even more. Her mind kept flashing back to him—that tall, broad-shadowed stranger with eyes that had absolutely no business being that hypnotic. And his cologne? It was a potent mix of rich cedarwood and bad decisions. Everything about his aura screamed trouble, and she wanted absolutely nothing to do with it. Before she could spiral any deeper into her annoyance, Rebecca suddenly grabbed a lock of her hair and yanked it like they were back in kindergarten. "Rebecca! What the hell—?!" Hazel gasped. But Rebecca was already sprinting down the hallway toward their next class, throwing words over her shoulder like confetti. "The last one there buys coffee at break!" Sure enough, when the mid-day break rolled around, Hazel found herself dragging her exhausted feet into the crowded campus cafeteria. She ordered two regular iced coffees and a chocolate brownie that she absolutely deserved after the morning she’d had. Balancing the cardboard tray carefully, she turned around to head back to the courtyard—when the universe decided it wasn't quite done playing games with her yet. Bam! She collided headfirst into a solid wall of muscle. The cardboard tray buckled, the plastic cups flipped, and dark, hot coffee went absolutely everywhere. A pristine, crisp white shirt in front of her was now covered in a massive, ugly brown stain. And then, that distinct scent hit her nose again—the exact same cedarwood. Hazel's eyes widened in horror. "Oh my God—I am so, so sorry! I didn't—" She looked up, meeting those dangerously familiar, piercing eyes. "You," Hazel gasped, the apology dying on her tongue. "Mr. Rude." Ethan was already completely done with the world. Sitting through that two-hour, soul-draining introductory lecture had exhausted the last of his patience, and now his favorite white button-down was completely ruined. "Are you blind?!" Ethan snapped, his temper breaking completely as his voice came out much sharper than intended. "What exactly are those eyes for if you can't even see where you're walking?!" Hazel's initial shock and genuine guilt melted clean off her features, instantly replaced by something hot, defiant, and furious. Her small nose flared, and her jaw tightened into a rigid line. "It was an accident," Hazel said, her voice dropping into a dangerously calm, icy register. "And last I checked, your eyes are literally just buttons—so maybe don't come for mine." Ethan stared at her, stunned by her sheer nerve. But she wasn't done. With absolute, unadulterated audacity, Hazel tilted her hand, lifting the remaining half-empty cup of coffee, and deliberately tipped the rest of the dark liquid right onto his already-soaked shirt. "You asked for it," Hazel said sweetly, flashing him a venomous, sugary smile. The last threads of Ethan's control shattered completely. Stepping closer, he leaned down, his voice dropping into a low, lethal whisper that sent a tremor through the air between them. "Don't you ever cross my path again," Ethan warned, his eyes dark with a dangerous promise. "Because I will make your life miserable. I will burn you raw." A tiny, split-second flicker behind Hazel's blue eyes showed a hint of surprise, but if Ethan expected her to run away crying, he had severely underestimated her. She fired back before he could even take a breath, her voice rising, her eyes blazing, backing down zero percent. "You are not the main character here!" Hazel shot back, stepping right into his space. "Nobody wanted to be anywhere near you anyway. Get out of my face! And in a thousand lifetimes? I still wouldn't want to see a single trace of you. You know what—just forget it. Screw you!" She turned on her heel, her long hazel-brown hair whipping through the air, leaving Ethan standing alone in the middle of the crowded cafeteria. --- Stomping down the hallway, Hazel's hands were shaking from pure, unadulterated adrenaline. She hated him with every single ounce of her chest. But those dark, piercing eyes kept flashing in her mind. No. Absolutely not. We are not doing this, Hazel. She violently shook her head to clear her thoughts. He was a grade-A, certified, unrepentant jerk, and she had zero business letting him live rent-free in her head. Rebecca was waiting for her at the classroom door as the final bell was about to ring. Hazel pasted on a fresh smile, grabbed Rebecca's hand, and walked into class, determined to forget his existence entirely. ⚠️ THE TWIST (SUSPENSE HOOK) The professor cleared his throat, tapping his microphone to get everyone’s attention. "Welcome to Advanced Creative Writing, everyone. This semester, 50% of your final grade relies on a mandatory, semester-long partner project. No exceptions. I have already assigned your partners based on your core academic contrasts." Hazel felt her heart do a weird, uneasy flutter. She glanced at Rebecca, but her friend was already staring across the room in horror. "First pair," the professor announced, scanning the spreadsheet on his screen. "Hazel and Ethan Vance." Hazel's breath completely caught in her throat. Slowly, like a scene straight out of a nightmare, she turned her head toward the back row. There Ethan sat, staring right down at her, his stained white shirt hanging loosely and his eyes dark, unreadable, and dangerous. A slow, lethal smirk pulled at the corner of his lips. Oh, my God, Hazel thought, her hands turning ice-cold. The universe didn’t just hate me. It wanted me dead. --- 🔒 END OF CHAPTER 1 --- ✍️ AUTHOR'S NOTE Starting a new journey always feels a little nerve-wracking, and the first few pages are just the tip of the iceberg!
