The Day Before The Celebration
"I've waited five years to meet my mate." Selene whispered to herself. "This weekend we're finally having our 'coming of age' celebration with the other packs in the country." The she wolf said to no one in particular. She walked over to check herself in the mirror, evaluating her appearance. Removing an ebony strand of hair from her face, she catches her eyes momentarily. The familiar gold and green eyes staring back at her different features. Her gaze wandered from her charcoal hair to her developed chest, stopping at her curves. Selene had always kept in great shape, it was noticeable to anyone who had seen her. "What if he rejects us?" a small voice asks. Selene sighs "that's not a very positive attitude Persephone." She gently scolded her wolf. Selene stared at her reflection a little more "we're beautiful, kind hearted and I'm sure whoever our mate it, they'll love us both." As the conversation between them ends, a voice bellows from across the house "Is everyone prepared for the celebration?" Her moms voice echoing through the halls. " I swear mom worries too much. Let's go see what she's freaking out over now." Selene began her departure down the stairs to the kitchen. She walked into the double doors to be met with a disastrous mess. The scene in front of her consisted of discarded wrappings from banners, drink containers, and a lot of..."ammo" Selene verbalized that thought. "what's with all the weaponry?" she asked her mom. Her copper orbs jolted to the weapons and ammo. "You weren't suppose to see that." Her mom quickly and carefully gathered everything up. Selene eyed her mother suspiciously "so, you gonna tell me, or?" she asked expectantly. "I suppose your gossipy little she wolf friends will tell you anyways." She sighs before she continues. "Alpha Fenris called your father. He said a pack was attacked on the way here. It was most likely hunters. No one can mind link them, no one has seen or heard from any of them." Her words stop as she stifles a cry. "hunters" Selene whispered to herself. "That's why everything was out. we were checking out arsenal in case something were to happen, at least we would be prepared." Selene nods in understanding. "wait." She young she wolf realizes something. "Fenris?" her mom glances confused "Alpha Fenris as is the head of the council Fenris?!" her mom shakes her head "yes." Selene ponders for a moment "so, this must be a serious threat this time around?" her mom nods. Almost as if waiting for the conversation to end, her father walks in. He greets her first with a kiss on the forehead, then her mother with a kiss on the lips. "Hey sweetheart" he tells his wife with a loving tone. Her troubled look is met with his warm gaze "Beau" she responds with concern apparent. "I know what you're thinking already, i just got off the phone with Maddy. She's gonna supply a protection spell for those who don't have their own witches. We're making sure everyone is safe. Give me a little credit Serena." He smiles gently at her, causing her to relax. "I hope Gwen didn't hear our conversation, she'll only worry and I want her to have a good time this weekend for your guys' birthday." Serena said to Selene. "hear what?". Selene turned to see her sister with her golden locks messy from bedhead. "What your gift is. We didn't want it ruined so we were hoping you hadn't heard me talking about it." She smiled, trying to convince her of the lie. Gwendolyn's blue green pools drilled into her sisters heterochronic eyes searching for the truth "damnit, I want to know what it is!" she whined. Selene and her parents sighed internally in relief. "no, you can wait." their father smiled. "I'm gonna go to the living room and make some calls. Walking past Gwen, he ruffles her hair and kisses her forehead. She follows her father to the living room, both of their golden locks bouncing behind them. As Selene and her mother watched them go, her mother looks over at her lovingly. "I know that look mom" she exclaims suspiciously. Her mom responds by dramatically putting her hand to her chest "whatever do you mean?" she exaggerates her words. "If you want help mom, just ask." Her mom laughs "fine, help me. I need food prep done, we're only hosting seven packs this year, so we don't need as much as usual. Selene looked at her mother confused "only seven, why?" Serena had a sad look on her face "the other packs are worried about the hunters, and if it isn't the hunters, it's that group of rogues. No one wants to take that risk right now. The seven that are coming are large enough to fight an attack, the others aren't. Your father and I were hoping this year we could setup buddy systems for the smaller packs, but there's just too much bad blood between some of them right now." Selene nodded in understanding. "Lilly was also in that pack that disappeared, her family called me to tell me." Selene could fondly remember her moms childhood friend Lilly." She got up to go comfort her mother. "I had no idea mom, I'm really sorry. Go relax with dad, I'll finish up in here." Her mom looked at her with unspent tears and went into the living room. It was 11PM by the time Selene was done for the night. Tomorrow all seven of the packs would trickle in throughout the day and she couldn't be more excited. It was difficult for Selene to sleep that night, but her eyes closed at some point and she was in an unknown place outside of her territory. A feeling of uneasiness washed over her as Persephone was trying to force her way out. The wolf won eventually and Selene began her shift. The dream filled with cracking and noises while the shift was completing. After a few moments an enormous pitch black wolf appeared where Selene once stood. After a swift shake of her fur, she let out a deafening howl, echoing for miles. Percy began her forest prowl, attempting to figure out where they were. She thought she recognized the area but then it would change, it was only when she caught a somewhat familiar scent she sped towards it. The scent becoming stronger and stronger until it was assaulting her nose. She recognized now what the smell was. It was blood, wolf blood. Persephone inched closer to the smell cautiously, trying to hide herself in case she was in danger. Coming up to a decently sized bush, she moves inside of it to see if she can find the smell. Poking her head slightly through the brush she sees where the smell is coming from. A pack of slaughtered wolfs lie in the clearing ahead of her. Persephone runs up to see if any are alive, they weren't. The wolf lets out a painful howl in loss of the wolves. As the howls fill the sky, Persephone doesn't notice a being creeping up on her. A cracking noise now echoing in the sky. Selene jerks awake panting and full of sweat. "it was just a nightmare" she panted. "it was just a nightmare" she kept repeating. After a moment of repeating this mantra, she got up to splash some water on her face. Her pupils still black from the nightmare stress. "what if it wasn't just a nightmare, but a warning" Percy finally spoke. "Like last time" she whispered. Selene became annoyed " This only happened because of what mom was talking about yesterday". Her wolf remained unconvinced but didn't push it.
