The warehouse erupted into chaos as the alarm blared, and red lights flashed. Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest as he grabbed Lily's hand. They had to move fast.
"Run!" he shouted, leading Lily towards the side door they had entered through.
Dr. Malcovich shouted behind them, "Stop them! They can't leave with that information!"
Ethan glanced back to see several security drones activating and moving towards them. They had to navigate through the maze of machinery, trying to stay ahead of the drones. The sound of mechanical whirring grew louder, and Ethan knew they had to find a way out quickly.
Lily spotted a service ladder leading up to a catwalk above. "This way!" she yelled, tugging Ethan towards it.
They scrambled up the ladder, reaching the catwalk just as the drones arrived below them. The catwalk gave them a vantage point, but they still needed to find an exit. Ethan's mind raced as he scanned the surroundings. There, on the far side of the warehouse, was a skylight partially open.
"We can climb out through there!" he pointed.
They ran along the catwalk, the drones attempting to follow but losing sight of them momentarily. Ethan and Lily reached the skylight, and Ethan pushed it open further. He climbed through first, then helped Lily up. The night air hit them as they emerged onto the rooftop.
"We have to jump to the next building," Ethan said, looking at the adjacent rooftop. It was a risky leap, but they had no choice.
Lily nodded, determination in her eyes. "Together."
They took a few steps back, then sprinted and leaped across the gap. They landed safely on the other side, but there was no time to rest. They could hear the drones recalibrating below, preparing to pursue them. Ethan spotted a fire escape ladder and led Lily towards it.
They descended quickly, reaching the ground just as the drones began scanning the rooftops. Ethan and Lily ran through the narrow alleyways of the industrial area, their breaths coming in short, sharp gasps. They knew they had to get back to Innovia and inform the authorities about Dr. Malcovich’s plans.
After what felt like an eternity, they emerged from the industrial zone and into the outskirts of the city. They slowed their pace, trying to blend in with the sparse crowd. Ethan pulled out his phone and called his parents, explaining everything in hurried whispers. His parents, worried but understanding the gravity of the situation, agreed to meet them at a safe location.
"We need to stay hidden for now," Ethan said, looking around cautiously. "Let's head to the old library. Hardly anyone goes there anymore, and we can lay low until we figure out our next move."
The old library was a relic from Innovia’s past, a large, dusty building filled with forgotten books and quiet corners. They slipped inside, the musty scent of paper and ink filling their noses. They found a secluded spot in the back, surrounded by tall shelves.
Ethan finally allowed himself to catch his breath. "We did it, Lily. We got the evidence. Now we just need to find a way to stop him."
Lily nodded, her expression serious but relieved. "We’ll figure it out, Ethan. Together."
They spent the next few hours reviewing the footage they had captured and planning their next steps. They knew they couldn’t do this alone. They needed help from someone with the resources and authority to take down Dr. Malcovich.
As dawn approached, Ethan's phone buzzed with a message from his father. "Meet us at the city council office. We’ve arranged a meeting with someone who can help."
Ethan and Lily exchanged a determined look. This was just the beginning of their fight against Dr. Malcovich. They packed up their things and prepared to face the new day, ready to take their evidence to the authorities and stop the villain before it was too late.
