Chapter 1
Elena's POV
Machines beeped loudly beside me, drawing me out of the darkness that surrounded me. I frowned slightly, wondering where I was. I tried to open my eyes but they felt heavy, like bricks were sitting on them. I could barely move my legs, every part of me felt stiff and painful.
After what seemed like minutes of trying to open my eyes, they finally opened, fluttering softly as bright light hit my vision, causing me to close them immediately. I let out a soft groan and opened my eyes again, blinking rapidly to adjust to my surroundings. And that's when I realized where I was.
The hospital. Then the memories came rushing like a damn wave. The screams, the blood, the car crash, the accident. And… “Mom?” I called out faintly but there was no answer. I moved my head left and right, hoping to see her somewhere in the room but it was empty. Maybe she's in a different ward. I had to believe that.
I managed to move my legs that hurt so badly just by moving them, my body aching like I had been run over by a truck. I wanted to cry, to scream for help but I had to stay calm. I'll do all of that.Right after I found my mother. With a groan, I pushed my legs off the bed, ignoring the pain that coursed through them, and stood up.
My legs wobbled, threatening to give way but I couldn't just sit still when I didn't know how mother was. I would never forgive myself if something bad happened to her. The door was pushed open and a nurse stepped in, her eyes widening when she saw me.“Doctor, she's awake!” She yelled out the door and came to my side to help me back onto the bed.
“Let me go, I can walk—”*Miss, you need to sit first. The doctor will be here any minute—”“I don't care about the doctor, where's my mom? I need to find her!” I snapped at the nurse and she flinched. The door opened and the man who looked like a doctor stepped in with his stethoscope in hand.
He had a small smile on his face but I wasn't in the mood for smiling. “How do you feel, Miss Elena?” He asked, placing the stethoscope in his ears, and I sucked in a sharp breath, the dreadful feeling in my chest growing by every passing second.“I feel— heavy. But other than that, I'm fine. I just need to find my mom. Please. She's here right?
Did she survive the accident? Can I please see her? She must be so worried.” I blabbered quickly and the moment the doctor exchanged glances with the nurse, I knew something was wrong.“Well, you see, Miss Elana—”“Where's my mother!?” I screamed this time, grabbing the doctor's shirt and he let out a sigh before holding my hands gently.“We're sorry. But your mother didn't make it…” His voice trailed off and it felt like my whole world had crumbled.
I left the doctor's shirt and collapsed backward, but the nurse held me back, stopping me from falling. It made no sense. She couldn't be dead. She had held onto my hand yesterday after the accident and told me to survive with her. She told me to stay strong for her.
Even after they rolled us to the theatre, she smiled at me. She told me she would see me after the surgery. She promised me.How could she be dead?“How is this possible? She was still alive when we came here yesterday! Why did I survive and she died, huh?
Why are you so incompetent?” I yelled, tears rolling down my cheeks in torrents and the nurse looked at me in confusion.“Miss Elena, you've been unconscious for over a month.” The nurse announced and I stiffened in shock. “After the surgery, you went into a coma which lasted for over a month.
Your mother died right after surgery, Miss.” She explained and I just gaped at her in shock. No wonder my body felt so heavy. I barely moved for over a month.********** The months that passed by after I was discharged from the hospital were like a blur. I worked more than I earned, all to pay my hospital bills and get my mom out of the morgue. And even with all that, there was one thing that I focused on.
Finding the one who caused the accident that killed my mom and put me in a coma for over a month. That accident wasn't a pure coincidence; a truck had rammed into us on purpose and disappeared right after. We didn't get help until two hours had passed, as someone had intentionally caused a roadblock.
After I was discharged from the hospital, the first thing I did was to go to a police station to file for an investigation. But I was turned down almost immediately. The case was ruled out as reckless driving by my mother, which was in no way true, and the truck driver got away freely. While my mother lay cold in the morgue. She died so unfairly, and I knew that I wouldn't stop until I found the murderer and made them suffer as I did.I shrugged my apron off, letting out a yawn as I stretched my body. I literally worked my ass out today and I didn't even get a single tip from this damn pub. Such stingy rich folks.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I reached for it, yawning again as I placed it by my ear. I really needed to start sleeping early.“Elena, baby girl! How are you?” I heard Taylor’s voice from over the phone and my lips curled into a smile at the sound of her voice.
“Well, I'm not fine, Taylor. I f*****g need to sleep and I can't. I'm tired of taking caffeine. I'm on my way home though.” I responded, grabbing my bag that sat by the side before stepping out of the pub and she let out a giggle that had me raising my brows in question.“I just expressed my lack of sleep and you're giggling? What kind of best friend are you?” I questioned in frustration, and she snorted like I had just asked a dumb question.
“Well, your sleepless nights are about to be over, baby girl. I finally found it.” She replied with excitement and enthusiasm, causing me to freeze in my steps.“You found what?”“The one who murdered your mother, Elena. After months of searching, I found her."No f*****g way.“Her?
You know what—I'll be home in ten.” I mumbled hurriedly and ended the call before hailing a cab. My legs bounced nervously as the cab sped down the road but it seemed really slow to me. Even after I told the driver to speed up about five times.
The car finally came to a stop and I stumbled out of the cab, rushing into Taylor's apartment like I was being chased by a monster.“Oh my goodness, what happened to you?” She asked as soon as she saw me, handing me a bottle of water that I gulped down in one go.“I'm fine, Taylor.
Just tell me what you found.” I managed to mutter as I sucked deep breaths in and she placed her laptop in front of me.“Remember the plate number of the truck you gave me the other day? The one you were sure was the cause of the accident.
I traced it down and found the owner who works at an underground boxing club. He's known to work for one woman and one woman only.” She whispered, her eyes turning to meet mine that were wide with shock.“And her name is Cecilia.”Cecilia.
The name rang a bell. The moment she clicked on a picture and the image of “Cecilia” popped up in front of me, I froze. So she was the one who killed my mom?
