The morning was bright and beautiful, the sun shone from its angle a little bit blur and not too harsh. Saturdays felt like heaven in New York. The beauty billboards and crowdy street with busy people.
But not for Maria, it had been a heck of a day, although it just got started. She had her heart broken last night. The kind that will take her two years to recover. Now she knew what being betrayed felt like for the first time.
Love is a beautiful thing, but not when it falls on the wrong person.
Maria felt it, like her heart dropped down to her toes. The tears rolled uncontrollably down to her cheeks, the type that burned. She sniffled, trying to hide her pain, but it was more than she could bear.
She thought of all the moments she spent together with Frank, the vacations they took, a little date under the moon, at his balcony. Playing together at the beach, watching the sunset from a country house. Every moment felt like memories to her now.
She paced in her room wondering what to do, her hands shaking terribly, her phone almost dropped the moment she picked it.
“Control, control.” She squeezed her eyes shut and gave a heavy exhale, trying the relaxing therapy for herself. She held the phone very tight like it was about to be stolen from someone she was cautious of.
Every second that counted, made the air feel heavier and even more difficult to breathe.
She squeezed her face, trying to control the tears, but they didn't ask for her permission before they rolled out of her glands. Her throat began to burn from ache. She managed to dial Sofia's number with trembling fingers, hovering around the screen.
It rang.
Once,
Twice,
And the third time, Sofia answered.
“Sofia!” Maria called out, as she held her mouth trying to hide the noise from her cry. She sank into her bed and held her hair, squeezing a part of it on her head. The pain was unbearable.
Sofia stood from her bed, anxiously. The tone of Maria's voice made her worry, Maria's call woke her that early morning. She was looking like someone who just got electrocuted. Her hair was in a very busy mess. Her pyjamas rumpled and her face very bare. “Maria?, why do you sound like that? Is anything the problem?” Her voice was low, but worrisome.
She yawned.
“Sofia, I'm… I'm so sorry, I…”
“What happened? Why are you apologizing?” The weight of worries increased in Sofia's voice, she squeezed her brows very tight and sat on her bed, sitting on one leg.
“He cheated.” Maria uttered again, this time she let her cry come out abundantly. She whimpered softly, sniffling as the tears streamed down.
Sofia shut her eyes, a little frustrated and a little confused, “look!” She left her hand suspended in the air like she told someone to wait, “you'll first do me that favour of calming down,” she reduced her tone. “And explain everything in details. Ok?”
Maria nodded her head constantly, like Sofia was there with her as she bit her lip. “Ok.”
“Ok now, go on.” Sofia relaxed her back on her pillow, she knew what was about to come out from Maria's mouth would probably make her need a popcorn.
“Frank cheated…”
“What!?” Sofia stood sharply from her bed, interrupting Maria. Her face squeezed, disgustingly. “ Hold on a second, he did what?” She said as she raised her tone.
She looked around her room, like someone was watching her and then she moved her phone closer to her mouth, and softened her expression and her voice. She whispered into her phone, “What exactly did he do?”
“ If you'll calm down and let me explain.” Maria voice was calm but shaky.
“Ok, ok.” She sat down back on her bed, but this time she sat upright. Ready to receive the full news.
“He cheated on me. I was supposed to see him yesterday at the masked party but he didn't show up.” Maria paused and sniffled again. “So I left the party mid way and went to his house. It was so unlike him, not picking my calls and not showing up at the biggest, grand party ever of the year.”
She began to sob again, her throat hurting badly this time. She wiped the tears off her face with her hand.
“Maria, go straight to the point. Why? Did he show signs before? I mean… he proposed already.” Sofia said still trying to put Maria's words together.
“He did. But I over looked it. I'm sorry.” Her cry grew louder
“It's ok my love, he’s proven that he is a d**k and we all knew, but you're going to get over it. And I'm here with you. Always. But why are you apologizing?”
“I did something Sofia.” Maria reduced her sobbing, and went quiet.
Sofia squinted in confusion, furrowing her brows. “I don't understand. What did you do?”
Maria sniffled, “I..I'm really sorry Sofia I didn't know what got over me…” Maria sounded like she betrayed Sofia, which was actually true. The tears threatening to come out of her eyes again. “I was drunk…”
Sofia voice lowered, fear gripped her. Words hesitated to come out of her mouth. She wasn't ready to receive anything bad.She wondered what Maria must have done? But she couldn't fathom. “I'll ask you for the last time, Maria. What did you do?” Her voice, a little bit shaky.
Maria found it hard to say, so she closed her eyes tightly and said in a rush, “I made out with Kane.”
“You what …?”
“I know, I know. I shouldn't have. I was drunk and I didn't know what was going on. I should have told you, but I was scared…”
Sofia stood slowly from her bed, her eyes fixed on a spot, she could hardly hear what Maria said after that. She couldn't feel her hands anymore, it was like everywhere went blank to her.
Wait, this was all clear.
No wonder kane wanted to marry her all of a sudden, and Maria was acting all weird about her refusal.
This was all an act to cover their mistakes.
When Sofia thought all couldn't get worse, this had to happen and that, at this time. Her best friend and her boyfriend. Betrayal. s*x. Everything made sense now.
