Adonis' POV
I got out of the office and headed for my room. My body was all sweaty from an earlier run. Jeez...a nice cold shower would be nice. My wolf had been really on edge since the decision to start looking for our mate. And this in turn made me antsy. I didn't understand why he was so riled up. He usually didn't interfere with what was going on, but he had been reaching out a lot more than usual.
'Hey, Vance'
'What up ice. Are you good?' said my wolf, playfully.
'Yeah, frost.' I said, matching his tone.
'What have you been up to?' I mentally rolled my eyes.
He knew what I'd been up to. We were practically intertwined, though we could block each other out, and were two independent beings, there were things we couldn't keep from each other. He was aware of that, but I decided to go with the flow.
'Nothing much, just wondering why you've been on edge lately.'
'Uummm. So about that....' he started, trailing off. I sensed that he did not want to talk about it.
'I'm sorry, but there is no escaping this one.'
'Ok...ok.... So, I want us to stop sleeping around. I want to wait for our mate, now that we're looking for her.'
'I know that's not it, Vance. What has been causing the fluctuation of emotions? We're all over the place Frost.'
'I don't know,' he said after a while, and that was a lot more unsettling than anything I had thought he'd say.
'What do you mean you don't know?'
'Just that' he said, then blocked me from reaching him.
That only added to my unease. Vance was never one to react that way, nor did he keep things from me. Especially when they were affecting us.
I walked into my room, happy to find no one in it. By that I meant Bel. I mean no hard feelings, but I just wasn't in the mood to deal with her. She'd end up worsening my temper, and the thought of making her one of my play things, would be even more appealing. Don't get me wrong, s*x wasn't at all I had in mind. I meant my dungeon play things. The ones I tortured when I was teetering at the edge of.... I needed to ease my foul temperament.
I got in the bathroom and took a long cold shower; god knows I needed it. I really wanted to wear something comfortable, but I had a meeting and ended up wearing a black pantsuit and a shirt . Starving, I headed to the kitchen for some food. I hadn't eaten anything since I woke up, and even for an alpha, I had quite an appetite. As I entered the kitchen, I found yet another nice surprise — it was also empty.
I made myself some sandwiches and an omlette, topping it up with pancakes, oats and a hot cup of coffee. Afterward, I went to the pack field to see how training was going. I had told my gamma, Zayn, to take charge as I had other pressing matters to tend to. But since I had gotten time to spare, I decided to check in on them. I didn't want them lazing around just because I was not around.
"Morning, alpha," Zayn said, bowing as I approached the clearing.
"Morning. How are they carrying on?" I asked, referring to the men.
"I had them warm up and begin sparring in twos according to how you paired them up."
"Good." I watched as the men went at each other, with the intention of bettering their skills.
I know you're probably thinking that it's unfair for only men to train, but that's where you'd be wrong. Both men and women are trained in my pack. It's just that they do so at different designated times. Therefore, avoid any distractions, especially for mated couples. They only trained together on Fridays and Saturdays. I watched them for quite a while, giving advice when needed, before Xander informed me that the alphas had arrived through mind link.
Guess I really had to do this. I didn't like having alphas on my land because they were hard to control. And I knew that for sure because I didn't like being ordered around. Thank god, I was the highest in alpha ranking. Therefore, I had a bit more power and control than the rest. The room went silent as I walked in. Everyone was already settled, so I just began the meeting immediately.
"Thank you all for showing up on such short notice. There are certain matters that need to be addressed. We all know the prophecy and what it states. As well as the fact that the time it takes place is not specified. So I think it's high time I started searching for her."
"What is this about, Adonis?" asked Daniel. I didn't know what his deal was, but I hoped he knew better than to start a rivalry with our pack.
"I thought I was clear. This is about finding the most powerful being to ever exist," I said plainly.
"Are there any motives behind this?" he asked
"No. But we never know what awaits us in the future, and we might need her help." I stated, not about to tell him my pack was facing multiple threats from rogues and hunters.
"Honestly, I think this is just all about you getting higher status and more power," he said smugly, making murmurs erupt in the room and a low growl escaped me. Taking this as the others being in his favor, he continued.
"Unlike you, most of us rely on our own strength and power to rule our packs. Not some conveniently prophesied mate. Even worse, a woman." He paused dramatically, then proceeded, "I, for one, get rid of any weakness in my pack before it even sprouts. Therefore, we do not need to be saved by some mythical 'all powerful woman'" he finished, emphasizing 'woman' with disdain.
The room erupted into chaos, as people started to talk over each other. Daniel sat back, looking at me conceitedly. I lifted my hand to signal them to stop, and everyone quietened down.
"I already have power, Daniel, and would never stoop that low. I like getting things myself, not through others, unlike you." I started,
"Moreover, your strong opposition to the search only suggests you have something you don't want me finding. I mean, it's natural for one to eventually start looking for their mate, with or without the aspect of more power."
"If that's the case, then why do you seem so agitated?" he let out, a smile spread across his face. I could feel pressure oozing off of me, as my wolf threatened to come out. And according to the way the other Alphas were sending wary glances my way, I knew they could also feel the shift in the room. Daniel seemed to shrink back in his chair, realizing that he was playing with fire.
A smile graced my lips, exposing my now elongated teeth. Some of the Alphas winced while others tensed in their seats. Only a few managed to retain their composure.
"That might be because of your lack of respect towards me in my own territory," I said, my voice dripping with an unmistakable warning.
"But how ca....."
"Now, now, we don't want to cause a fuss. Do we?" Silence, "All those in favor of the search commencing?"
Everyone except Daniel raised their hands.
"It's settled then." I took deep breaths to calm my wolf.
"The search will begin tomorrow. I will be visiting each pack with my beta and one pack member, moving according to the pack ranks. I expect cooperation to make this move along with ease, and I won't take any resistance lightly. Now onto other matters," I said, ending the conversation about the search.
We had a brief discussion concerning other matters on different packs before the meeting adjourned. After, some Alphas left immediately, whilst others remained to converse a bit longer. I smiled when I saw alpha Daniel seething as he left the room. Now that was a pleasant sight.
Come to think of it, his behavior was peculiar and had piqued my curiosity. I mean, it was clear that sooner or later, I would start a search to find her. The only plausible reason I had for his behavior was that he had something he didn't want me finding out, or he somehow had information on my mate. If that was the case, that made my search a lot easier and more interesting. I couldn't wait to find out what he was hiding, from me specifically. A smirk crept into my face as I left the meeting room.
Game on Daniel.
