Chapter 1: Introduction
Chapter 1: Introduction
Lily Evans wiped her brow, feeling the sticky humidity of the summer evening seep through her uniform. The clock above the counter at Mel’s Diner read 8:45 PM, and she still had two tables to clear before her shift ended. She tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear and picked up a tray laden with dirty dishes.
“Hey, Lily! Can you take table seven?” called out Jenny, her colleague, who looked equally exhausted.
Lily nodded, forcing a smile. “Sure, Jenny. I got it.”
As she made her way to table seven, she couldn't help but overhear the conversation between two men at table three. One of them was clearly agitated, his voice carrying across the diner.
“Do you have any idea who I am? This is unacceptable!” he fumed.
Lily glanced over and saw a man in a tailored suit, his perfectly groomed appearance starkly contrasting with the diner's casual vibe. She recognized him immediately—Alexander Montgomery, the billionaire CEO whose face often graced the covers of business magazines.
Lily hesitated for a moment, then approached table seven. “Hi, my name is Lily, and I’ll be your server tonight. Can I get you started with something to drink?”
Her customers, a young couple, smiled and placed their orders. As Lily walked back to the kitchen, she couldn’t shake off the feeling of curiosity about Alexander. What was a man like him doing in a place like this?
Back at table three, Alexander was still fuming. “I’m telling you, Michael, this is the last time I let anyone else handle my travel arrangements. Stuck in this godforsaken place...”
His friend, Michael, tried to calm him down. “Relax, Alex. It’s just one night. We’ll be back in the city by morning.”
Alexander glared at the dingy surroundings of the diner. “I can’t believe I’m here.”
Lily returned to the table with drinks for the couple at table seven. As she passed by Alexander’s table, she felt his piercing gaze on her. Ignoring it, she focused on her work, but the tension was palpable.
When she finally returned to the kitchen, Jenny was waiting for her. “Did you see who’s at table three? That’s Alexander Montgomery!”
Lily nodded. “Yeah, I saw. He’s not exactly blending in.”
Jenny laughed. “I bet he’s never been in a place like this before. Good luck serving him if he orders anything.”
Lily rolled her eyes. “Rich people.”
An hour later, as the diner began to empty out, Alexander remained engrossed in a heated phone call. Lily was clearing the tables when he finally hung up and waved her over.
“Can I help you with something?” she asked, trying to sound polite.
Alexander looked at her, clearly irritated. “Yes, you can start by telling me why the service here is so slow. I’ve been waiting for nearly an hour for a simple burger and fries.”
Lily felt her temper flare but kept her voice steady. “I’m sorry for the wait, sir. I’ll check on your order right away.”
She rushed to the kitchen and returned a few minutes later with his food. “Here you go. Enjoy your meal.”
He barely acknowledged her, diving into his food with the same intensity he seemed to apply to everything.
As the night drew to a close, Lily finally clocked out and stepped into the cool night air. She walked the few blocks to her small apartment, feeling the weight of the day lift slightly. Her thoughts drifted back to Alexander and his arrogant demeanor. She couldn’t deny that he was handsome, but his attitude made her grateful for her simple, honest life.
Meanwhile, Alexander checked into a nearby hotel, still seething from the day’s events. The dingy diner and the encounter with the waitress had only added to his frustration. He lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking about how his life had taken an unexpected turn. He was used to luxury and efficiency, not small-town diners and slow service.
As he closed his eyes, he couldn’t help but remember the defiant look in Lily’s eyes. There was something different about her, something that made her stand out from the people he usually dealt with. But Alexander dismissed the thought quickly. Tomorrow, he would be back in his world, and this night would be just a minor inconvenience in his otherwise perfect life.
