CHAPTER ONE
THE AUDITION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING The first rule of Hollywood is simple: nothing is ever what it seems. Not the smiles. Not the fame. And definitely not the people behind the cameras. The air inside the casting room smelled faintly of expensive perfume and nerves. My name is Riley Williams. I am twenty-three years old. And today might be the day my life finally changes. Or the day it falls apart completely. I stood in front of a tall glass mirror in the hallway of Velvet Sky Studios, staring at my reflection like it belonged to someone else. The girl staring back at me looked calm. But inside? Chaos. My fingers tightened around the script. This audition was different. Not just another commercial. Not another background role where no one remembered my name. No. This was THE ROLE. The lead character in Floral Waters, the newest movie directed by the legendary Alex Elliott. Hollywood called him a genius. The media called him a “ghost director.” Because no one ever really knew him. He rarely gave interviews. Never attended award shows. And yet, every movie he made became a masterpiece. Or a scandal. Which made this audition even more terrifying. A door opened. “Next.” My stomach flipped. The assistant glanced at the tablet. “Riley Williams?” “That's me,” I said, praying my voice doesn't shake. Inside the room, sat five people. Producers. Casting directors. Assistants. But the chair at the center of the table remained empty. And somehow, that empty seat felt more intimidating than the rest of them combined. I stepped forward. “Whenever you're ready,” someone said. I nodded. The script trembled slightly in my hands. This is it. I inhaled. And began. “You think I'm afraid of you?” My voice echoed through the room. “You think I came all this way just to run away now?” The character I was playing was fierce. Broken. Dangerous. A woman fighting for her freedom in a world that wanted to silence her. I let the emotions take over. The anger. The heartbreak. The desperation. “You don't get to decide my ending.” Silence filled the room. Heavy. Electric. Then someone spoke. “Again.” I nodded, and did it again. Harder. Deeper. More real. Because this wasn't just acting. This was survival. Ten minutes later, I finished the final line. “Some truths should never be hidden.” The room went silent again. One of the producers leaned forward. “Thank you.” That was it. No smiles. No feedback. Just two words. Hollywod’s favorite form of rejection. I turned to leave. And that's when the door opened. The temperature in the room seemed to drop. Everyone straightened instantly. And I knew without asking. He had arrived. The man everyone whispered about. Alex Elliott. The director. He stepped into the room like he owned every molecule of air inside it. Tall. Composed. Unreadable. His dark eyes scanned the room before settling on me. And for some reason… I couldn't look away. The casting director cleared her throat. “Perfect timing. We were just finishing the auditions.” He said nothing. He just watched me. Studied me. Like I was a puzzle he hadn't decided to solve or destroy. Finally he spoke. “Do the last scene again.” The room froze. One of the producers hesitated. “Now?” His gaze never left mine. “Yes.” I swallowed. Of course… The mysterious director would show up just as I finished. I stepped back into position. My heart pounded so loudly I was sure everyone could hear it. But his expression remained cold. Detached. Like nothing in this world could ever surprise him. “Whenever you are ready,”he said. So, I began again. But this time… Something was different. His stare was intense. Unnerving. Like he could see every lie I’d ever told. Every fear I’d ever hidden. Every dream I’d ever chased. And suddenly, the scene didn't feel like acting anymore. It felt real. Too real. “You think you control everything…” My voice trembled. “But secrets always find a way out.” His eyes narrowed slightly. Interesting. I continued. “And when they do…” My pulse raised. “The truth destroys everything.” Silence fell again. The longest one yet. Then he leaned back slightly. “Hmm.” That was all. Just one sound. But somehow, it felt more powerful than applause. He turned to the producers. “Best audition.” Dismissed. Just like that. I walked out of the room, my legs weak. Was that good? Bad? Impossible to tell. Hollywood thrived on mystery. But something about his reaction… Something about the way he looked at me… Made my chest tighten. Outside the studio, the sun was blinding. Los Angeles buzzed with noise and ambition. Actors. Dreamers. People chasing the impossible. I sat on the edge of a fountain and exhaled slowly. “Well?” someone asked. I turned. My best friend, Anuoluwapo Davies stood there holding two coffees. “You look like you just fought a dragon.” “Worse,”I said. “I met the director.” Her eyes widened. “The one no one understands?” “The one everyone fears?” She gasped dramatically. “And you survived?” “Barely.” She handed me a coffee. “So…how did it go?” I stared at the ground. “I have absolutely no idea.” Which was the truth. Because the man behind the movie… The man everyone admired and feared… Was unlike anyone I had ever met. Cold. Mysterious. Dangerous. And somehow…. I had a strange feeling this audition was only the beginning. Across the street, inside a wine car, someone watched. Alex Elliott, the director. His assistant sat beside him. “Well?” she asked. He didn't answer immediately. Instead, he looked at the audition footage playing on his tablet. The girl. The intensity. The honesty. The way she delivered that final line. “Some truths should never be hidden.” He paused the video. Interesting. Because if she got this role… She would be stepping into a story far more dangerous than she realized. A story connected to secrets Hollywood had buried for years. Secrets connected to him. His assistant waited. Finally he spoke. “Call the producers.” “What should I tell them?” His eyes darkened a bit. “Tell them we found our actress.” And somewhere far away… A phone rang. A voice whispered. “She got the role.” A second voice replied quietly. “Then it begins.” Because in Hollywood… The real drama always happens Behind Closed Sets.
