Blurb

In Ashveil, three laws govern all existence. Do not cross the border. Do not speak to the enemy. And above all, do not break the Law of Cleansing. The Law of Cleansing is older than peace, older than mercy, older than war itself. When enemy bloodlines bind through forbidden love, the bond is declared a contamination of existence. Not a crime. A disease. And diseases are not executed, they are contained. The law is simple: one must kill the other, or both will be erased from existence itself.Vesper Voss has spent her life behind frozen walls, a vampire noblewoman bound to a marriage of politics and silence, living like a beautiful ghost in a cage of silk and control. Kaelen Grimfang was born to fight, not to feel. A feared werewolf warrior, forced into a political marriage of power, she has survived battles but never her own life. They were never meant to meet. But in the Deadlands, where war turns into something far worse, they collide. Blade meets claw. Enemy meets enemy. And something impossible happens.A bond forms. Forbidden. Dangerous. Unnatural. As their bodies begin to change, warmth where there should be none, cold where there should be fire, the fear of discovery becomes unbearable. And when it finally breaks them, it is not an enemy or a spy who brings it all down. It is Vesper, trying to save the woman she loves the only way she has ever known how: alone, in silence, without asking. The confession she believes will protect Kaelen instead ignites a war between vampires, werewolves, demons, and shadow hunters and drags them both beneath the executioner's blade. As kingdoms turn against each other, two women are forced to face not just the law that wants them destroyed, but the truth that even love, given without consent, can be its own kind of cage.Is love worth the destruction of everything else? Or is some love never meant to survive the very people trying to save it?

The General's Masterpiece
General Voss drove into Vesper with brutal precision, each powerful thrust a clear claim of ownership. The grand bedchamber in Blackthorn Citadel echoed with the wet slap of flesh and his low, commanding grunts. Vesper lay beneath him on the silk sheets, her long black hair spread out like a dark halo. Her porcelain legs were wrapped tightly around his waist as he demanded more. His deathly pale hands gripped her slender hips hard enough to leave fresh bruises, pulling her onto his thick c**k with every deep stroke. Somewhere around her thirtieth year of marriage she'd started counting his breaths instead of the cracks in the ceiling. Not out of boredom, exactly. It was just something to hold onto that was hers, knowing, before he did, when it would end. "You are perfect," he growled against her neck, his fangs grazing her sensitive skin. "My masterpiece. Say it." She knew this part by heart. Soft enough to sound like want, steady enough to sound true. She'd stopped having to think about the tone years ago, the way a musician stops thinking about where to put their fingers. "I am yours," Vesper whispered obediently. Her voice remained soft and melodic, even as her silver eyes stared blankly at the canopy above. Her body moved with him, arching her back, clenching around him, moaning at the right moments. But inside there was nothing. No heat. No pleasure. Just the same emptiness she'd carried for a hundred years now, and underneath it, something she never let herself finish thinking. Something close to: this isn't a marriage. It's maintenance. Voss f****d her harder. The heavy four-poster bed creaked under his ancient strength. He pinned her wrists above her head with one strong hand, his red eyes burning with possessive pride. He took her deeper, faster, claiming every inch of the woman he had carefully shaped into perfection over the decades. Sweat glistened on his pale skin. His short black hair with silver streaks fell across his forehead as he pounded into her without mercy. Vesper's full breasts bounced with each rough thrust. The sound of their bodies meeting filled the room, wet, rhythmic, relentless. Voss leaned down and bit her shoulder, not enough to break the skin, but enough to mark her. She'd worked out the difference between that and being touched a long time ago. Never said it to anyone. Wasn't sure who there was left to say it to. Outside the heavy chamber doors, Elyra Cart waited silently. The petite handmaiden stood with her hands folded neatly in front of her, head slightly bowed. She was used to these sounds after so many years of service. Still, every time the General took Vesper like this, a quiet pity filled her violet eyes. She said nothing. She never did. She simply waited, holding the fresh gown and brush, ready to restore her mistress to flawless perfection. Voss snarled loudly as he neared his release. He drove into Vesper even harder, his hips slamming against her. His fingers dug deeper into her skin. With one final, victorious thrust, he buried himself to the hilt and came. Hot seed spilled deep inside her as he groaned in satisfaction. He stayed buried there for a long moment, breathing heavily against her neck, grinding slowly to push every drop inside her. "No one else will ever have you like this," he whispered possessively before finally pulling out. No one else had ever asked, either. But that wasn't a thought she let sit for long. Warm seed immediately began to trickle down Vesper's thighs. A sharp knock at the door shattered the heavy silence. "Enter," Voss commanded, still breathing hard. His trusted aide stepped inside, eyes carefully averted from the bed. He was holding himself too stiffly, the posture of a man trying to keep bad news out of his voice and not quite managing it. "General, forgive the interruption. The Deadlands are breaking open. Demons are pouring from the ash in great numbers. The border is falling into chaos." Vesper noted the fear in him before Voss did. Old habit. She filed it away without meaning to, the way she filed most things quietly, in case it turned out to matter later. Voss's expression turned cold and calculating. He rose from the bed and began dressing swiftly in his dark military uniform. "Prepare my forces at once. Vesper will accompany the patrol. Let the court see my wife at the front lines, a symbol of strength and perfection." A symbol. Of course. It was the only role that had ever really been hers. The aide bowed deeply and left the room. Only then did Voss nod toward the door. "Elyra." The petite handmaiden entered quietly, her violet eyes lowered in respect. She moved with gentle efficiency. First, she cleaned the warm seed that ran down Vesper's thighs with a soft, warm cloth. Her touch was careful and kind. Then she helped Vesper into a fresh elegant black gown that hugged her slender figure perfectly. With steady hands, Elyra brushed Vesper's long straight black hair and arranged it into its usual flawless style. Vesper sat before the large mirror in silence. She stared at her own reflection. She looked beautiful. Untouched. Perfect. But her silver eyes glistened with unshed tears. These tears weren't from the rough way her husband had just taken her. They came from somewhere older, the crushing, endless void inside her chest, the knowledge that this cold, empty life was all she would ever know. Day after day. Night after night. Used, displayed, and forgotten until the next time he wanted her. She wondered, not for the first time, how many more decades she'd sit in front of this same mirror before there was nothing left behind the reflection at all. A single tear escaped and rolled slowly down her porcelain cheek. Elyra wiped it away with gentle fingers. Her violet eyes shone with quiet pity and sadness, but she remained silent. She finished arranging Vesper's hair, then stepped back with her head bowed, waiting for further instructions. Vesper closed her eyes for a moment. The weight of her golden cage settled back around her shoulders, heavier than ever. She had been married to the General for political power. Trained in court manipulation and poison. Shaped into this flawless, obedient wife. And yet she felt more like a doll than a person, most days. Every day, if she was honest, and she rarely let herself be. Somewhere far away, across the ashen wastes, war was calling. Demons were rising. The border was breaking. And for the first time in many decades, something faint and dangerous stirred beneath the ice in her soul. A quiet, lonely spark of curiosity. What would it feel like, she wondered, to walk toward something dangerous because she'd chosen to. Not because he had. Vesper opened her eyes and looked at her reflection one last time. The tear was gone. Her face was perfect again. But deep inside, that small spark remained. She wondered, for just a moment, what it would feel like to be free.
