Will's and their amendments.
It was the end of the year. A time where we , lawyers , had much to see to either from documentation and amendments or potential property transfers or mergers that businesses decide to do at the last minute. I had one week left before my firm could close and I could unwind and sleep away the stress that this year had provided me with. It was very rare that I would be called in to prepare a will at this time of year but it was never unusual. So, here I was sitting across from Mr Madden. He was an elderly man but proud for his age and with good reason. He had founded a multi-billion dollar company that was still booming. Madden Inc. boasted the most sought after investors than any other company in its category and it was all because of this shrewd business minded man. "I'm not doing too well, Giana, as you may know." And that was true. The city was shocked by the news of the near death this man had faced with a heart attack that should not have seen him alive and yet, here he was. "Which is why I have called you in to make a few ammendments to my will and have it officially drawn up." I could hear the finality in his tone. Almost as if he was already aware that his end was nearer than anyone would think. Well, it was either that or having nearly escaped death had given him much thought to prepare for that outcome. "Of course, Mr Madden, what would you like to change?" I unbound the leather cover of my notepad to draft out his requests and fished out the pen from its holder at the side. "My son, Nicholas, I want to leave everything to him. My properties, houses, the entire empire, whatever is in my accounts, all of it will go to him." Ahhh the famous Nicholas Madden. I have not seen the man but the gossip of his scandalous escapades involving multiple women were often talked about in my firm, especially by the newly acquired intern in the firm. Nicholas Madden was the golden boy to this multi-billionaire, Gregory and his wife, Serena. Unfortunately, she had died tragically in a car crash years ago. A few years after which, the papers reported an estrangement between the boy and his father. I wasn't surprised that Gregory had made the decision to leave it all to his son. After all, scandals aside, his son was also successful and by his own strength too. Besides, he did not have any other heir and he was too proud of a man to leave his hard earned fortunate to charity. "Also, add in a clause for an allowance to go to Melbourne with the initial 'A' next to that. He will know exactly what to do with that." Gregory Madden added that last part with a solemness that I could not understand but I wasn't here to meddle so, I added his instruction to the draft. "Make a change to that first one. There is the villa in Spain that my sister, Melina, was fond of. She isn't my favorite but I'm a dead man, I may as well do a few things right before that." He said heavily and tried to mask it with a light laugh but there was too much of it for a small laugh to cover up. "That would be all." He added with a finality. "Got it. I should have these ammendments finalized and sent to you by the end of the week. It would need your signature." He waved his hand at what I said as it was formality. "Yes, of course." He smiled, and it was the first time he had ever done so with me. I had fought the biggest law suits against this company and won it and this man had never afforded me a smile then but here it was. I pretended that it was nothing out of the ordinary and gathered my stuff to leave. All I wanted to do now was get home, remove these five inch heels and collapse in a bath tub. I rose from my seat and found that Gregory was staring at me but he wasn't all present. It was like he looked at me but his mind was thinking of something else. "What are your plans for this year end holiday? You certainly work tirelessly. You must party equally as hard." He said in an intrusive manner thinking nothing of it and why should he? Whoever knew the man was aware of how entitled he was. But no one ever dared to go against someone with such affluence. "I have no plans currently." I said, my fingers played with the delicate white gold bracelet my dad got me,then realized to add in something more just in case I got a suggestion that I did not like. "And my mother is still to confirm with me on her arrival date." I added a bright smile to sell it as if I was looking forward to spending some time with my mother. He reached for the draw to the left under his desk and pulled out a folded cardboard, voucher looking thing. "There is this new years event in South- Africa. That is a full paid booking along with access to the best of amenities." He slid the pass across the smooth surface of the table and I caught it just before it could fall of the edge. "It is a grand event. The best fireworks I've ever seen to date. If your mother changes her mind, maybe you could make the trip there. You won't regret it." I eyed him skeptically as he spoke but saw nothing but sincerity. A man who had numbered seconds trying to make amends. So, here I was two weeks later. The hotel booking was made for the day before new years until the first of the new year. It was probably the most posh hotel resort I have ever been to and not because money was an issue for me, because it was not, but simply because I was unaware of such a place. The pristine hotel was situated directly onto a private beach and, by the look of it, not just anyone stayed here but the crème de la crème. It was exactly three o'clock when I decided to pick my body up from the warmth of the sand and head back to the suite for a nap. The main reason that I actually decided to make this trip was because a, I needed the time away and this was proving to be an absolute delight, and b, my mother rang me two days after Mr Madden had given me this booking. If I was being honest, this was actually an escape from spending the remainder if not the entire holiday with her. Don't get me wrong, I love my mother but she had always been a little too nosey about my every aspect of my life almost as if she wanted to control it all. I found it best and a peace to me not to be with her more than I should. She was furious at me for not cancelling my plans at her behest and I probably wouldn't hear the end of- My thoughts were cut of when something hard, almost like a wall, hit my arm. Looking up, I noticed it was very much the opposite of a wall. The man groaned when his drink was spent all over his shirt from his carelessness. '' I am so sorry-'' I started to apologise even though it was not my fault but the towering figure with deep green eyes and thick brown hair squared his shoulders. My breath almost caught at how devastatingly good looking this man was until he opened his mouth. ''Watch where you're going will you!'' He said with annoyance in his voice before muttering something along the lines of letting just about anyone in this place. ''Excuse me, you were-'' my temper started to sizzle and he cut me off again, bringing my sizzling temper to a simmer. ''You're excused.'' The man growled rudely. He still had not fully looked at me, his gaze was much rather fixed on his over-priced shirt that was now ruined. He was about to walk away but I was not willing to accept this unnecessary haughty behaviour. ''Who do you think you are? You can't walk around like you own the place, number one. Two, you need to watch where you are going. You bumped into me! and you have the damn nerve to be so rude about it.'' Oh I had gotten his full attention alright. His green eyes, darker than they were seconds ago, narrowed at me as I berated him. I caught his gaze briefly slip from my face as he assessed me with distaste in his eyes. Instead of getting furious at my scolding he was quite the opposite. Amused yet also surprised. ''You really do not know who I am?'' He said, his muscular tanned arms crossed over his torso. The soaked material clung to his abdomen revealing a pack under his shirt. I tore my gaze away from the s****l allure that this man oozed and focused to the disagreement at hand. ''I do not and I could not care less.'' I stormed past the man, refusing to give him a second thought. This resort was much too beautiful to have it be ruined by a mere minutes encounter with some conceited ass. I needed a nap. That would calm me but it was not the main reason for me wanting to get some rest. Tonight was the new years eve and I spotted a few of the resort staff carry in palett loads of fireworks. This was going to be a real treat for my eyes. So, I got into my room and under the covers and fell asleep in no time. I groaned when the sound of my phone ringing pulled me from the peace of my sleep. Shuffling around, I spotted the phone on the side table. One look at the name on the caller ID and I sighed. "Yes, Mother?" I knew I wasn't being polite but I was still much too upset by her fuss of me, a twenty-nine year old, being here in the first place. "You really need to change up your space. It's much too plain. Maybe an interior decorator will do this place some good." I frowned and she spoke, my mind still holding on to the muzzy feeling of sleep until I realized what she was on about. "Are you in my house? How did-" I was shocked that she got in there. She didn't have a key or access to my house. "How did I get into your house? Well, I made a spare the last time I was here." She said completely unshamed. "It's sad that you didn't willingly give me a key." Her attempts to guilt me never worked. Well, they did at one point, in my younger days until I caught up with it. She wanted a reaction and I wasn't going to give her one. My eyes darted to the clock at the bedside and I saw that it was half an hour to midnight. "Okay mom, have fun. There are numbers on the fridge for fast food." I said in a rush. She was about to say something else but all I said was goodbye and hung up. I took a moment to let out a sigh. Looking at the bracelet, it has never been removed since graduation, my eyes began to well up. My dad was my rock. He guided me through it all. He was my mentor, the best lawyer in the country. He was passionate about what he did and seeing that piqued my interest in the field. He was the most easy going and fun-loving person with a zest for life. That was how I remembered him.. or rather chose to. A year after graduation, my mother cheated on him and, that hurt, he couldn't live with. He turned to alcohol as his out and soon enough, he became the shell of the man I knew. My mother, on the other hand, went on to live her life as she saw fit for a few years until recently where she felt the need to come back. I snapped out of my thoughts when I noticed a small crowd of people walking towards the beach for the count down. We still have ten minutes which was enough time for me to get a drink or five. I needed to loosen up a little. I was down six drinks by the time it was time for the big count down. To be honest, I was tipsy but what the hell. I worked all year round. I'm sure to be allowed to get hammered once during the holidays. With that thought, I motioned for the bartender to bring me one more. I noticed how he slyly eyed me skeptically but he brought me one regardless. I'd save this one, I thought as I picked up the glass, until the actual countdown. I turned, glass in hand, to find a seat so I could get a good view of the display when my shoulder bumped into a firm back. My drink spilled on me this time and I groaned. "I'm sor-" the familiar deep voice stopped causing me to turn my attention to the man. I wasn't surprised to see it was the same conceited ass from earlier. I narrowed my eyes at him. "Apology accepted." His green eyes stared at me hard, almost challenging me. Despite my distaste for the man, he was exceptionally handsome. His face, that was sporting a slight stubble adding to his allure, looked like it was carved by angles.. or the devil. I turned to walk away but then stumbled, managing to catch myself just before I fell. Gosh, I must be more tipsy than I thought. "You really need to watch where you're going." To my surprise, he was not irritated but he seemed highly amused. When she didn't say anything he added, "Unless this is some plan of yours and you are doing this on purpose to gain my attention." I knew he was joking. The slight smirk said as much even though his green eyes, still serious and narrowed, said otherwise. He removed his hand from his dark blue shorts and motioned for the bartender to bring him a drink. It seemed like the he already what this man's drink of choice was. "Yeah, sure. Bump into a stranger at a location I barely have much knowledge of to get his attention. Yeah, that's my plan." I said before slowly walking away from the man and finding a spot to settle on. It was a beautiful sight. The waves were crashing gently onto the shores. Everyone was in a good mood. There were these miniature lanterns strewn across the sand as well as onto the pathways giving a gentle light to the beach. The overall of vibe of the place was relaxed. I closed my eyes, taking in the salty air as I breathed. This may have been the best rash decision I've ever made. I had to thank Gregory for this when I got back. This moment , right here , was all that I needed but didn't know it until now. It was peaceful. It felt like every ounce of stress and worry that built up over the years were being carried away with every breeze that brushed across me. "You look like you have a lot on your mind." I should have groaned. I should have been annoyed at this familiar voice but I was not. I turned to look up at the man, straining my neck slightly. He handed me a drink. A replacement for the one I spilled earlier, I assumed. "Quite the opposite, I assure you." My eyes opened to find that the man kicked off his flip flops and was getting settled right next to me.
