Chapter 5

1411 Words
It had been almost 3 years since every single one of Mr Peters children were under one roof, infact even the dead Mr Peters might have loved the sight of all his offsprings under one roof. This had only occured when they were children and couldn't get the quickest opportunity to be far away from him as possible. Maybe what they were all Waiting for was indeed his death. Each of them under the roof could not deny the particular relief that now settled in them because they had just put their father under ground. They felt free, one could even say they have never been more freer in their lives. Maybe that was why all their cheeks remained dry and they all wore similar faces, void faces. Even the most happiest among them wore a face without any emotion. The burial was probably the biggest in the Village so far. Everybody in the village was aware of the burial of the famous Mr Peters. Knowing him from one act or another, mostly good. It was more than safe to say that he remained a celebrity to his hometown even after he passed. Chinenye cut through her chicken not bothering to care about the eyes that her siblings all had on her. She took slow bites of the delicious piece of chicken. Downing it down with her 6th glass of wine, that was just perfect with the well cooked chicken. Compliments to mummy she thought, her mother still had those hands that created magic in the kitchen and a whole universe of beautiful flavours in somebody's mouth. Swallowing her food she finally looked up to her two siblings who were already looking right at her, waiting for a chance to air out their thoughts. "Is there a problem?", She asked, addressing them in the manner that she adressed her employees, as she reached for the bottle of wine. "Chinenye", her sister Grace began with a slight plead in her tone. "Why aren't you even considering it", she said with a whining voice, just like she would when they were little kids. "Getting married is not such a bad idea, I mean the inheritance for goodness sake!", The young lady whined yet again making Chinenye to roll her eyes at her little sister's whining. "Darling, if it's the money you need I can get that to you", she said sending her sister a look that made her sister curse under her breath, obviously taking her statement as a direct insult. Hissing loudly at her sister, she took down her own glass of wine as well with one quick swing. She had always hated her sister's guts, thinking she was carrying herself way too high than one should ever. Even though she wished she was as graceful and respected as her. Chinenye to her was just described with one word, 'Chinenye', nobody else could compare to her, nobody else could ever fit in her shoes, they were bigger than anyone else in the dining and Grace could never deny that. "Yeye", Gideon called Chinenye with the nickname he would usually use when they were younger, hoping the informality would soften his elder sister. Looking over to Gideon after pouring herself a glass, she raised one of her eyebrows at him. "Come on, as much as I hate the man, getting those properties ain't a bad idea after a year when I'm done with school", he began only laying an argument. Chinenye shook her head then chuckled lightly before taking a sip of her wine. "Getting married is not as bad as you think", he said throwing another fact at his sister, hoping it would gain him some points. "I am not getting married just so you two can acquire some properties, that you guys can easily get by working for it. Instead of spending time on the media and posting about things that don't matter", she said this time talking straight to her sister Grace. Grace rolled her eyes and sighed loudly at her elder sister's remark, it was so much like her. Putting her down because she chose a different path than her. Unlike Chinenye, she didn't want a company or an empire to her name. She preferred her millions of fans she got from acting and just being active. Grace actually enjoyed to be in the public eye, unlike Chinenye that rather stayed behind the scenes and try as much as possible not to bring any sort of attention on her. "Adane", Ezinne called out softly, making all her children acknowledge her presence on the table. Chinenye looked over at her mom who had those soft eyes that comforted her when she was little, only that those eyes only ignited more hatred in her heart for her mother. "Mummy", she replied to her call looking away and taking a longer sip of her glass of wine. "Adane, don't mind your siblings. Don't feel rushed to marry. It is fully your choice and when it is right for you, we will support you. I won't advice you to marry all for an inheritance", she said smiling softly but leaving her daughter's face the same. "Thank you mummy", Chinenye said before taking another sip. "Our wife", a male voice called out before he finally sat at the table making everybody's eyes to rolled as they watched their uncle take a place on the dining table. "Uncle Emeka", Grace finally said in greeting on behalf of all of them. "My children", he smiled greeting everybody with his eyes as he reached for a whiskey and a glass. "Mummy Chinenye, you are not in a position to advice Chinenye on being patient about her responsibilities", he said taking his words one by one so he could sound wise. "All my brother could have wanted was to see all his children marry but unfortunately he could not witness that", the old man said pouring himself a glass of good whiskey as all the eyes of the Peters family fell on him. "Knowing how wise my late brother is, he added it to his will, as a condition before any of his wealth could be shared. Even the little that is to be shared with his extended family is placed under that same condition. Which is for his Adane to be wed. Infact, it seems more like his last dying wish", he said adding more effect to how critical the matter actually was. "It should even be more of an honor, than a sacrifice to undergo such a task for your late father, as it would have made him even more proud of his eldest daughter", Emeka said striking a nerve in Chinenye with the cursed word proud. Chinenye took a breath keeping herself in check not wanting to make a scene. Mrs Ezinne stared Emeka down also wanting to make a scene but as usually stayed in the place she had created with her own hands over time of unending submission to her now dead husband. "Wouldn't you want to make your father proud Chinenye?", He said smirking at his niece making her blood boil even hotter. "Uncle Emeka, I think that is our sisters decision to make and not yours", Gideon said standing up to his uncle and also preventing a scene that Chinenye was patiently wanting to make if the old man could strike the right nerve once again. "And would you please excuse us sir, we were having a meeting", the young man said already standing up and giving his the older man a sign to exit. Without a choice Emeka stood up to his feet with a huge grin on his face. "I will be in touch Chinenye, I do hope you make the right decision. Sooner rather than later, because there is more to happen if you refuse to wed", he said before making his way out of the room. Chinenye glared at the man's back as he exited the room. Did that foolish man just threaten me on behalf of that dead bastard? She thought clenching her jaw. "Chinenye", her mother called trying to calm her daughter's nerve down. Chinenye's tightened her jaw harder, trying to keep her emotions in check. "I'll take my leave", she said finally after taking a deep breath. "Gideon, if you want to stay over before your flight you are more than welcome", she said already standing on her heals, then making her way outside.
