Chapter 4

It had been a month since the tragic incident. Angelica was compelled to give false testimony that she could not see the man who murdered her fiancé. She made this false statement to release Violette and Leo's parents, from the clutches of Lorenzo. But the cost of her sacrifice weighed heavily upon her soul. Once full of joy, Angelica slowly lost her sparkle and stopped speaking. She started spending more time alone. She couldn't eat well, struggled to sleep, and her happy dreams vanished. Depression took over, stealing her smile and brightness, leaving her feeling lost and hopeless. Meanwhile, Lorenzo revelled in his wicked pursuits, his life seemingly untouched by remorse. As Alexandre entered the bar, he found Lorenzo with a good-looking chick on his lap. "I need to have a word with you, Buddy," Alexandre said. "Can't you see I'm occupied at the moment, Alex?" Lorenzo retorted, his attention fixated on the girl before him, their lips intertwining in a hungry kiss. Alexandre cleared his throat. "I bring tidings that may interest you. Your long-standing rival, Augustin Dos Santos, has finally returned to France." A sly smirk curled upon Lorenzo's lips. "Is that so?" "Yes, indeed. Tomorrow, at restaurant La Grande Maison de Bernard Magrez, he will deliver three hundred packets of drugs to one of 'Soaring Eagles' esteemed clients," Alexandre revealed. Lorenzo's curiosity was piqued. "At what hour shall this meeting take place?" "Eight o'clock in the evening," Alexandre answered. A sinister smile crept across Lorenzo's face, his eyes gleaming with vengeful intent. "Tomorrow, I shall settle old debts. Augustin Dos Santos must face the consequences of his treachery." " Et la mort est la seule punition, Je donne pour les trahisons!" he muttered, gritting his teeth. [ Translation: And death is the only punishment, I give for betrayals] The blonde-haired girl seated on Lorenzo's lap was meticulously listening to their conversation. "I think I should go now. You've to finish the unfinished task, isn't it?" Alexandre enquired. Lorenzo nodded with a smile. With a ferocious intensity, he pinned the woman to the couch, tearing apart her exquisite lingerie in a single motion. He f****d her like a beast. Their cries of pleasure mingled with the rhythmic slapping of their skin. "I can't take it anymore, sir," the girl whimpered. "This is your punishment for deceiving me, b***h. What led you to believe I was a fool? I knew from the beginning, that you work for my adversary Eric. You're Eric's favourite w***e," Lorenzo's grip tightened around her throat, his voice dripping with venom. "It's true. I'm a courtesan and I work for Eric Boss... I'm sorry, Sir. Please....please forgive me," she shuddered. "Don't you know that death is the only punishment I have for betrayals?" he asked, caressing her cheek. He pulled his gun from the drawer and pointed it at her head. Fear gripped the young lady. "Sir, I will be your slave," she begged. "Spare my life." "Sorry, baby, but rules are rules," Lorezo said in her ear, biting her earlobe. He pulled the trigger of his gun. ━━━━━━♡♤♡━━━━━━ Angelica, hid her face with her palms, seeking solace from the merciless touch of the sun's rays. She rose from her tear-stained pillow. Stripping away her clothes, she stood beneath the running water. "How can anything happen to me when you are by my side?" "I love you, Angel". "Not even death can tear us apart." Leo's voice echoed in her ears. Tears ran down Angelica's cheeks, but she wiped them away. Adorning herself in fresh attire, she went to the office. She had resumed the job at her best friend's request. "Angel, my dear, look at what you've done to yourself. You didn't sleep even today? Did you not promise me to take care of your well-being?" Violette chided, her tone firm as she looked at Angelica's pallid face. "I try to sleep, but every time I close my eyes, I see Lorenzo killing Leo," Angelica's voice quivered. "Honey, you need to accept the fact that Leo is no more and move on in your life," Violette spoke softly. "I...I will try," Angelica replied, as she settled at her desk, immersing herself in the demands of her work. As the clock struck 6, signalling the end of the workday, Violette stopped Angelica's way back home. "We're going out for dinner, Angel," she exclaimed, beaming. "Violette, I am sorry but I want to return home," she politely declined with an apology. "You're such a spoilsport. It's been ages since we've spent quality time together. Please come, for my sake," Violette implored, and Angelica eventually agreed. "Thank you so much," she squealed with delight, enveloping Angelica in a tight embrace. "Not an issue. But we shall make our departure early," Violette nodded triumphantly as Angelica struck a deal. Violette quickly texted someone while Angelica called for a cab. "Mission accomplished. I have successfully persuaded Angelica to grace us with her presence at dinner. Arrive at eight o'clock sharp and execute the plan flawlessly. You must not be late! She is desperate to return home!" "I have summoned my Uber driver; he'll arrive soon," Angelica informed Violette, who discreetly stowed the phone in her bag. "What's the matter?" Angelica inquired, sensing something amiss. "Oh, nothing!" Violette exclaimed, a nervous smile on her lips. "Are you sure?" Angelica inquired again. "Why do I feel that you're hiding something from me?" Violette playfully hit Angelica on the shoulder. "Stop reading crime fiction," she exclaimed, laughing. "Look at you, investigating like Sherlock Holmes." Before Angelica could reply, the cab pulled up. "Where are we going?" she inquired as they got into the vehicle. "La Grande Maison de Bernard Magrez," Violette replied, a smile gracing her face. "All right, but remember we agreed to leave early," Angelica reminded. Violette gave a slight nod. "I promise, your highness." It was a quiet ride to the restaurant. Violette's fingers danced across her phone, engrossed in a clandestine conversation, while Angelica stared out the window lost in painful memories of the night Leo was snatched from her. (FLASHBACK): Leo enveloped Angelica in his embrace, their bodies nestled against the sandy shore, gazing at the waves crashing against the rugged rocks. "I'm in awe of how fate brought such a breathtaking beauty like you into my life," Leo whispered, his voice a gentle caress in her ear. Angelica's eyes sparked with adoration as she retorted, "And, I, my love, never imagined finding a man as amazing as you, who loves me with such depth." "Just one day to go and you'll be my bride," he exclaimed, his eyes brimming with joy. "I consider myself the luckiest man on this planet." Soon, their lips met. Their kiss was special, like the ones in fairy tales. It made them feel alive, sending shivers down their spines. And as they reluctantly parted, their eyes locked. "I love you beyond measure, Angelica," he murmured, gently pressing his lips against her forehead. "I love you even more, my baby," she blushed, as she buried her face in the crook of his neck. His eyes crinkled, a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth. "We should head home now, it's midnight," he said, checking his watch. Like a true gentleman, he extended his arm to her as they walked towards their car. They sat inside and drove away. Angelica, a lively chatterbox, continued to chatter, laugh and giggle while Leo smiled and attentively listened. All of a sudden, he noticed a few mysterious black cars tailing them closely. "Angelica, my love, something seems awry," he exclaimed, panic creeping into his voice. "Why, what happened?" she inquired, her voice laced with concern. "Those eight black cars have been tailing us relentlessly," Leo revealed, his gaze fixed upon them through the rear-view mirror. Fear gripped Angelica, her hand tightly clutching his as a black Lamborghini attempted to overtake them. "Darling, please hide and don't come out until I give a signal," Leo implored. "No. I won't let you face them alone. Whatever comes our way, we'll confront it together," she declared resolutely. "Angel, for my sake, my love, please crouch down!" Leo plead. With no choice, Angelica complied. Leo suddenly applied the brakes, the tires screeching as the car came to an abrupt halt. "Sweetheart, I'll be right back," he whispered before stepping out of the car. The piercing sound of gunshots echoed, followed by Leo's anguished screams. Angelica peered out the window, horror seizing her as she saw him lying on the ground, surrounded by a pool of blood. Trembling with fear, she caught a glimpse of the face of his assailant. It was none other than Lorenzo Da Silva, a ruthless gangster. As the monster climbed into the car and drove away, Angelica rushed to Leo's side. "Please, my love, open your eyes," she sobbed, caressing his cheeks. Her heart shattered into a million pieces as she cradled his lifeless body. The screeching of tires and the approaching footsteps filled her ears before darkness enveloped her. ━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━ "Angel...Angel," Violette called her out, jolting her back to the present. Tears cascaded down her cheeks. Concern etched over Violette's face as she gently inquired, "What's the matter? Is everything alright?" With a heavy sigh and a flicker of pain in her eyes, Angelica managed to whisper, "I'm fine."
