Years ago.
Jesse Brown's eyes shone with an intense blackness when Michael James, the CEO of a major fashion magazine, appeared in his office to ask for a "favor."
The woman he loved, and her father were in danger after a member of a criminal organization attempted their lives.
Michael James had no choice but to turn to the leader of the New York mafia; he wanted peace to return to their lives. No matter how much money he had in his accounts, it was impossible for him to face the mafia alone; it would be stupid, a suicide mission. That was the reason that brought him to Jesse Brown, hoping he would help him get rid of his enemies, no matter the cost.
Jesse, better known as "The Raven," listened attentively to the man's request in front of him while leaning back in his leather chair, smoking a cigar.
"Are you willing to pay the price?" he questioned, raising his chin, taking a puff of his cigar and exhaling the smoke.
"Tell me the price," James demanded without flinching, aware that it was better to make a deal with this man than to lose Kristen to the hands of those evil people who wanted to harm her.
Jesse flashed a Machiavellian smile and agreed to help him without stating the price of that favor, then got rid of Michael James's enemies and finally informed him about what he wanted in exchange for bringing peace back to their lives.
.
"What I want isn't so bad after all," he hissed, looking at James with determination and showing the darkness that emanated from his entire being.
"An arranged marriage between my firstborn and the first daughter you have, that will be the payment for your debt," the mobster said with an icy gaze, exposing the cost of that help.
He declared that he wanted a future wife for his son, who was only six years old.
What the mobster sought was for his son to marry a woman from the future like the Jameses.
Jesse Brown was a powerful man, a mobster who ruled New York City, but to maintain his status, in a world full of criminal organizations as big or bigger than his own, he needed alliances, and there were no alliances as strong as those forged through marriage.
James analyzed his words. There was nothing left to do; Jesse had kept his word, and now it was his turn to reaffirm his own, accepting the commitment to a daughter who did not yet exist.
James and Kristen had overcome many challenges to be together, and the idea of engaging their daughter to the son of the current leader of the New York mafia didn't seem so outrageous; his family would always have protection, which was preferable to seeing the woman he loved suffer.
James and Kristen were not yet married, but he gave his word to the mafia leader to grant his first daughter's hand in marriage to his son.
Four years later.
Michael James's first daughter, named "Katherine," was born, and on her first birthday, Jesse Brown appeared to reiterate the union of their children.
"I've come to meet my son's fiancée," announced the mafia leader. His son, Michele Brown, was now ten years old and officially engaged to the little girl, who was just one year old.
"I am a man of my word," declared James without a hint of fear, fulfilling what they had stipulated, also announcing that the marriage would take place when his daughter turned twenty-three.
James shook the man's hand, who smiled in agreement; it was done. Their families would unite in a strange alliance that they hoped would turn out better than it sounded.
