CANDLE BLOWS OUT AND SO KEVIN...
Kevin's 18th birthday was supposed to be one that he would never forget, and indeed it was-but not quite as anyone had planned. His parents had spared no expense, his friends had come in full force, and the night was filled with that kind of joy which only comes once in a lifetime. The lights were bright and blinking, the music was loud, and the sound of laughter filled the air as Kevin cut his cake. Everyone cheered while he blew out the candles; his smile shone brighter than ever. But with that last candle flickering out, so did Kevin's life. One moment, he was standing, surrounded by friends and family; the next, gasping for breath, clutching his chest, and falling to the floor. Panic ensued: calling of paramedics, screaming by his mother, frozen horror of his friends. Yet no amount of CPR, no desperate prayers, would save him. Kevin was gone. The doctors said it was because of a heart defect no one had known of—a ticking time bomb inside his chest that had gone off just when life seemed at its peak. Everybody mourned the tragedy of a boy taken too soon. The town was steeped in sorrow, and Kevin's story became the whispered tale of heartbreak at every dinner table. But Kevin's story didn't end there. Something odd began to happen in the days after his funeral. The first portent was subtle: his best friend, Max, awoke around midnight, drenched in sweat, feeling his heart being squeezed by an unseen hand. It was a momentary thing but sufficient to send him terrified. Max shrugged it off as a nightmare-then it happened again the second night. Then, it wasn't just Max. The others who had been at the party started to feel it. It would hit them out of the blue-walking home from work, sitting in a classroom, lying in bed at night. Their hearts would clench and the world around them would blur and they would feel like they were dying. But just as suddenly as it came, it would pass, leaving them breathless and terrified. No one, at first, was connecting the dots. How could they? Kevin was gone, and life, as it always did, was supposed to trudge along. It's when more and more of them started having these heart-stopping moments, whispers of something more sinister began to spread. Then came the dreams. Max was the first to see him. One night, after a particularly terrifying episode, he fell into a restless sleep to find himself once more standing in the middle of Kevin's birthday party. Everything was as it had been-laughter, music, cake. But Kevin was different this time. He stood in the middle of the room, eyes cold and hollow that once had shined so bright. He said nothing but watched Max everywhere. And then, just as Kevin had done on that fateful night, Max felt his heart seize in his chest. He fell to the ground, gasping for breath as Kevin loomed over him, watching, waiting. Max awoke screaming, clutching his chest as though he'd just lived through the exact moment of Kevin's death. Soon, it became that others started having that dream. Kevin was in all of them, silent and haunting, watching his friends and family relive his final moments. The pattern was clear: Kevin's soul had not moved on. He had returned, not as the boy they once knew, but something entirely different. He was angry. Kevin didn't just want to haunt their dreams; he wanted them to feel what he had. He wanted them to understand the terror of a life cut short, the unfairness of it all. And so, he began to enter their bodies. One by one, Kevin would take over-just for a few moments-long enough to make them experience the pain, the fear, the helplessness he had felt on that final night. He didn't discriminate. His targets became the friends, the family, even those people who had barely known him at the party. When Kevin took over, the world would turn. The glassiness, that came into his eyes when this was occurring, made him no longer himself, no longer Kevin at all. Countless times, he had stood with one foot in the abyss of life and death, feeling his heart pound for the last time. But when it was over, they fell back into themselves, gasping for air, hearts pounding, minds reeling from the experience. But indelibly impressed upon their psyches would remain those moments—Kevin's moments. Not too long after that, terror gripped the town. Nobody knew when and where Kevin would strike next. Nobody ventured out at night anymore, lest they be the next to feel his presence. His parents were grief-stricken, at their wit's end, and knew not what to believe. Was it really Kevin, or was it just them, a way of coping with the tragedy? Yet in their hearts, they all knew the truth. He was angry with the world for moving on, for letting him die before living. Now, he wanted others to share in that pain-to feel those final, fleeting moments of a life slipping away, as he had. And the worst of all? Nobody knew how to stop him.
