Up in her room, she looked at her meager possessions. She had few items that actually meant anything to her, and most of those she had already stowed in her bag that she had prepared earlier that day. It seemed like years had passed since then, but it had only been a few hours. Walking to the closet, she pulled out her luggage set. ‘I guess I’ll need more than one outfit and a change of underwear now. ‘She thought to herself. She started to empty her dresser and closet and place items in the luggage.
Reese stood in the doorway, not crossing the threshold but hovering just outside. He was restraining himself as best he could, but her scent was an enticing fog wafting from her room. It filled his head, making him feel slow and out of sorts while also awaking his wolf, who was ravenous with need and desire. He knew that she had yet to sense what he could, that her wolf had yet to awaken fully. She had been through so much already that he was relieved that was not thrust upon her. She had a lifetime of learning and training to catch up on. Adding the mate bond would make it all so much harder.
She caught herself stealing glances at the male standing just outside her door, and more than a few times, their eyes had met. She could feel the energy coming off of him, like electricity flowing through wire. His body was taunt with tension. She was afraid the slightest thing would set him off like a spring. But she couldn’t help noticing the way his shirt closely hugged his chiseled arms and chest that formed a perfect V down his torso, his jeans hung on his hips and were just tight enough to leave little to the imagination. He had to be over 6 and a half feet tall if not 7 feet. She felt her body warming to him and blushed. What was wrong with her! She had never felt this way about any male before. Never had the desire to find her mate. Males were a distraction from her studies, from the important things. Plus, she honestly had no desire to find her mate or a mate, until this moment it had never even occurred to her to worry much about it. But, Reese, there was something different about him. She couldn’t put her finger on it, but she sensed something stirring in her.
She gasped as their eyes met, and he caught her looking at him. She felt her face flush, and she hurried to finish her packing. As she zipped the last of her bags, she made a small coughing sound, “Um, I guess that’s everything.” She grabbed her knapsack and the duffle bag, gave her room one last look over, and turned to walk out the door. She found her way blocked by the body she had been caught admiring. Heat radiated off him and wrapped around her. She felt all the tension ease from her body. She bent her head to look up at him, their eyes meeting. The minutes stretched out, neither one knowing who should make the first move. He started down at her, and she found him closing the distance between them. Suddenly, his head snapped up, and he shook his head like someone shaking themselves awake. He nodded slightly and stepped aside. “We need to go.” Reese quietly said.
“Okay.”
As Oriana started down the stairs, Reese ducked into the nearly empty room to grab the few remaining bags. Glancing around, he was surprised at how sparse it was. There were no decorations, no posters of favorite bands or actors. There were no pictures of friends. There was nothing to give any clue who lived in this space. It did not feel like the room of a young woman in her early 20’s. Who was this beautiful creature that had taken over his every thought in the few short hours he had known her? Had she sensed anything when they had been standing in the doorway? Could she sense how bad he was trembling with restraint, while all he had wanted to do was touch her. Kiss her. Just the very thought of it sent his blood rushing, and he felt himself stiffen. Taking deep breaths, he tried to center himself, “Reese!” Philip’s voice in his head commanded. “There’s no time. We need to leave! Now!”
“Sir. Yes, sir.” He sent back. That was the second time Philip had saved him in the last 10 minutes. Gathering himself and the bags, he double timed it down the stairs.
