Early to rise
It’s 3 o’clock in the morning and there are lights flooding in my bedroom window. Looks like the alpha’s bratty son is having another party. So much for sleeping in today. I start to get up and ready for the day when there is a loud crash outside. One of TJ’s friends just jumped from the second-floor balcony and smashed a patio table. The Luna is not going to be happy about that but of course TJ won’t be blamed for any of it. He never is. I throw on my work out gear and head out for a run before training. Hard to believe it’s been three years since my mom moved us to silver moon lake. She found her second chance mate after my father died and decided it was easier to move in with him than to keep living with the ghost of her first mate hanging over us. I miss dad but Charlie is a nice guy, and he really loves my mom so its worth it. Plus, this pack has a lot more going on than my old one. There is even a human town not far from here. My friend Talli and I go to the club there sometimes. I skirt around the party goers who are drunkenly playing cornhole and head deeper into the woods before I shift. My paws crunch through the underbrush soundlessly as I run the perimeter of the pack lands staying clear of the patrols as I go. Not that I am doing anything wrong of course but I like to challenge myself, and it’s good to know that I can go unnoticed anywhere. I’m only 19 but I’m already one of the best warriors in our pack. I make a note of who isn’t taking their patrol duty seriously. I wouldn’t want anything happening because the guards were lax. I’m about halfway back to the pack house when I reach my favorite spot. It’s a small stream that feeds into a little pond. It’s so peaceful here. I usually stop here for a break and maybe a swim but not today. Today is the summer solstice and it’s our year to host the festival for our region. Rumor has it even the King is coming to our celebration. I’m just heading into my room when I get a text from Talli. Heading to breakfast any time soon? Or are you planning on training on an empty stomach? Jumping in the shower. Be down in 5. Save me a Danish. I respond. No promises! I laugh as I get in the shower. That girl could eat her weight in pastries and never gain an ounce. I have to work extra hard for my sweets. I’m showered and dressed in record time. It’s worth it this Danish is delicious. I have just enough time to savor it before rushing off to training with Talli. “Thanks for joining us, ladies. Take your places please.” Says Gamma Jeffries. “Todays training will be short due to the festivities this evening. Let’s start with some sparing. Everyone pair off, begin!” The Gamma walks around the field correcting stances, offering encouragement or advice as needed. Its just another training day as far as he’s concerned. That’s what I like about him though, nothing ever phases him. Even when a young wolf misses his mark and cracks the Gamma right in the jaw. He just shakes it off and shows the kid what he did wrong and how to do better next time. The Gamma is a sweet older wolf with a very fatherly disposition for someone with no kids of his own. He found his mate young, but she wasn’t able to give him children, so they took on the role of mentoring all the young pups in the pack. I was 16 when we moved her, so I didn’t get to grow up under their tutelage, but they always treated me like they’ve known me my whole life anyway. “Talli, Mira?” the Gamma’s voice shakes me out of my own thoughts. “Yes Gamma?” We say in unison. “The Luna is looking for young wolfs to help set up for tonight’s festivities on the back lawn. Seems someone wrecked the place last night and she’s having kittens about it.” Gee wonder who that could have been, I think. Talli and I head that way only to find about 20 other wolfs already there cleaning up beer cans and broken patio furniture. The Luna is bustling people about so we each grab a trash bag and get to work. By noon the whole place looks good as new, and the Luna seems to have calmed down a bit. The caters start setting up the banquet so it’s time for us to head upstairs and get ready. We stop in Talli’s room first so she can grab her dress and then we head to mine to get ready. Tal’s wearing a knee length silver dress with a lot of shimmer. I opted for a floor length dark blue dress with a high waist and little gemstones along the neckline. We add some makeup and heels before heading downstairs to the party.
