Chapter 1
"Emily! Is money more important to you than my life?"
Aiden Tate's furious roar echoed through the CEO's office of the Wilson Group.
He slammed a medical report onto the desk. Bold letters were printed on it: [The patient has suffered severe liver and kidney damage due to prolonged overwork. Immediate surgical treatment is recommended.]
Emily Wilson glanced at the report, crumpled it into a ball, and casually tossed it into the trash can.
"How dare you!" Aiden pointed at Emily, his anger boiling over.
Emily shrugged. "And what does that have to do with me?"
Aiden demanded, "Emily, do you even have a conscience?"
Emily smirked. "Conscience? If having a conscience means giving you two million dollars for surgery, then I'd rather not have one."
Aiden was so furious that his chest heaved with every breath.
He had once been an exceptionally talented professional manager, achieving the feat of taking two companies public at a young age.
Five years ago, after marrying Emily, she expressed her desire to start her own business and asked Aiden to leave his high-paying job and start from scratch. Aiden not only agreed but embraced the challenge enthusiastically.
Back when Wilson Group was just "Wilson Studio," Aiden worked tirelessly like a machine running 24/7, negotiating contracts and securing investments for her.
He had built Wilson Group with everything he had, but his health had collapsed in the process.
Only now did he realize that while he was out there working hard to secure deals, Emily had been busy transferring assets behind his back.
Now, when he needed surgery, he found himself penniless.
Aiden sat on the sofa, trying to calm himself. "Fine. I don't want to argue with you. Let's talk this through rationally. Harris Group, the biggest client of our company, their order alone brings in at least five million dollars in commission..."
Emily interrupted, "And what does Harris Group's order have to do with you?"
Aiden replied, "Didn't I secure that deal?"
Emily said casually, "Oh... I forgot to tell you. You don't need to worry about Harris Group's order anymore. I've handed it over to my brother."
Aiden had trusted Emily, and his trust had cost him dearly.
Now that he had sacrificed everything he had, he held no value in Emily's eyes.
Aiden nodded. "I see. Fine! Let's not talk about the Harris Group's order. Let's talk about my salary and commissions over the past five years. That must add up to more than two million dollars, right?"
"Aiden, how can you even bring that up? Haven't I been the one providing for you these past three years? And now you're asking me for money? Forget two million dollars!" Emily sneered. "I wouldn't give you a cent!"
Aiden almost laughed at the absurdity of it all.
He never imagined that five years of dedication to Wilson Group would end like this.
Aiden asked, "Emily, can you honestly say that without me, you and your company would be where you are today?"
Emily replied, "If not Aiden, there would've been a John or a Tom. The one thing I don't lack is men, especially men chasing after me! Let me tell you this: marrying you was your greatest fortune!"
Aiden, struggling to keep his emotions in check, could no longer hold his anger back. His face grew even paler due to his health condition, and sweat began to drip from his hair onto the expensive floor.
He clutched his chest, his voice weakening. "But you're my wife..."
Emily said, "I admit it. I have at least ten million dollars in my account right now, but I still need to buy designer clutches and upgrade my car. I've become someone with a reputation to uphold, and I don't want my friends laughing at me."
Aiden questioned, "For the sake of your so-called reputation, you don't even care about my life, huh? Emily, how can you be so ruthless?"
Emily stood abruptly, pointing angrily at Aiden. "Aiden Tate! Watch your words! Who do you think I am? Without me, you'd be a homeless bum on the street! Haven't I been the one supporting you these past five years? Without my company, could you have lived such a happy life?
"You wanna know what reputation is? Fine! Let me tell you!
"All my friends married into wealthy families. Their husbands don't make them work to support their families.
"But me?
"I married a loser, a freeloader who's been living off me for five years!"
Aiden replied, "I wanted to live with you as an ordinary person, but it seems I was wrong."
Emily laughed mockingly. "Pathetic! Do you think you're in some kind of TV drama? I've had enough of you."
She opened a drawer, took out a prepared divorce agreement, and threw it in Aiden's face. "Let's divorce. I've already signed it."
Aiden stared blankly at the cold divorce agreement for a few seconds. "I never thought that after three years of effort, all I would get in return is a divorce agreement."
Emily looked down at Aiden. "What? If we don't get divorced, are you expecting me to stay a widow for you? Aiden, have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror? Sickly and frail—do you even have the ability to satisfy me in bed anymore? If you don't, let someone who can take care of it."
Aiden clenched his fists and gritted his teeth. "In these three years of marriage, have I ever done anything to let you down?"
"You haven't done anything to let you down. That's true." Emily flicked her hand dismissively. "But whatever, you won't live much longer anyway, so I might as well let you know the truth. You make me feel ashamed! Your family makes me feel embarrassed!"
"My family?" Aiden asked with a bitter smile.
Emily sneered. "Do you remember a year ago when your mother came to Veridonia to stay at our house? Do you know why she left without saying goodbye?"
"My mother..." Aiden recalled that a year ago, while he was on a business trip out of town, his mother visited Veridonia to see him, choosing not to flaunt her wealth. But before he could return, she had already left. "Didn't my mother say she wasn't used to staying in Veridonia, so..."
Emily clicked her tongue and interrupted him. "Well, you're so naïve. You hadn't seen your mother in years. Even if she wasn't used to staying here, she wouldn't have just left without a word. Fine, I'll tell you the truth. When I saw her dressed like some filthy old hag, I felt so embarrassed and disgusted. So, the next day, I threw her luggage out. Simple as that!"
"How could you!" Aiden's fingers trembled with anger, and he began to cough violently again.
Emily snapped, "If you're going to cough, get out of here. Don't dirty my couch!"
When someone wanted to leave, it was never an overnight decision.
When someone wanted to leave you, no matter what you did, they'd still disappear in the end.
Aiden understood this all too well.
With a heavy hand, he signed his name on the divorce agreement.
Emily sneered. "The cooling-off period is one month. After that, we'll go get the divorce certificate."
Dragging his sickly body, Aiden struggled to stand up and walked toward the door. "You're free now. But let me warn you: don't regret what you've done today in the future!"
"Regret? How ridiculous! If I regret this, I'd better kill myself!" Emily shouted just as Aiden reached the door. "And remember to close the door!"
Aiden slammed the door behind him and staggered downstairs. The sunlight that day felt especially harsh to his eyes.
Suddenly, his phone rang. It was a call from his father.
Over the phone, Aiden's father said, "You've been away from home for three years now. In these three years, your mother and I have thought a lot about your marriage. You're our only son. Even if we didn't approve of your marriage, there's nothing we can do about it. Come back. Our company can't go without an heir."
