Chapter 28 Stretched out beside her father like she is, Evie dozes off well before nine o’clock. Brody clicks off the television and gently stands up, easing out of his seat so he doesn’t wake her. “You need any help getting her to bed?” he asks. Gavin scoops his daughter up in his arms and feels the muscles along his lower back protest. “I’ve got her,” he says, cradling her against his chest. Another year or two and he won’t be able to lift her so easily. When did she get too big for him to carry? It seems just yesterday, she was an infant in his arms, and now she’s halfway to full grown. When did he get so damn old?
