RACHEL POV
“That’s Athena,” Davina murmured to me. “She is the queen’s ward and grew up in the royal family from birth, but no one knows her parent although there are lots of rumors about her birth. They say she was delivered at the Alpha’s doorstep to be the savior of the pack one day. Rumor has it that she would be the chosen one tonight.”
“Why do we have to come here and howl our throats out when we already know the chosen one?” I said and scoffed.
“That’s because unlike you both, the Queen doesn’t believe in rumors, so we are here to hear the goddess herself,” Raymond spoke from behind us. The man had a way of making us forget he was there then shocking us with his presence even if he had never left.
It was said that whosoever the chosen one would be, their hair would begin to glow when the goddess possessed her, but Athena’s hair was the brightest shade of white and was adorned with glittering silver jewels. She sparkled.
She looked like someone the goddess would choose.
“Sorry, I’m late.” She said as she walked to us as fast as she could, which wasn’t fast at all but one couldn’t blame her, no one could walk fast in such six inch tiny heels.
“Are those heels six inches?” Kora murmured to Jane. Foolish question, if you asked me, the heels were six inches.
“Six and a half,” Athena replied while Jane gasped in worship.
“Athena, it is wrong to come late to a sacred meeting.” The queen scolded.
“I’m sorry, Your Majesty.”
“Do not forget to howl for forgiveness before you ask for the goddess’s help.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
The Queen waited for a full minute while everyone stared into the moon before she spoke. “The time is now!”
Different tones of howls filled the air, it was like we all connected to one language and communicated with the goddess.
At that moment, it didn’t matter who was ugly or not, nor tall or short, the Alpha became like every other wolf and begged the Goddess for help.
“Whatever was threatening us this time had to be very big. I have heard of several threats, but none had incurred a meeting like this.” Davina murmured into my ears.
The howling went on and on, I tried to concentrate and join them, but something was constantly tugging me back. I didn’t understand it. It seemed like I didn’t belong here and at the same time I felt at home, at peace, but the part of me that didn’t belong held me back from howling with them, suddenly, the queen shouted. “SILENCE”
Immediately the whole place became more silent than a graveyard. I heard the wind move but nothing else made any sound, even the birds were quiet.
The moon seemed to shine brighter, and suddenly I felt light like a burden had been taken off my shoulders.
“Close your eyes before you get caught.” Davina scolded me.
But something strange happened, my eyes closed, but I could see, but what I saw wasn’t the queen nor the people that were around me.
It was a forest, there were trees everywhere, but I stood in front of a very huge tree. I had never seen anything like it. I could see how far the roots extended and how thick they were.
Was this a dream?
I could see my hands as I lifted them, pinched my face, and felt pain. What was happening? I willed myself to move, curiosity had me turning around the tree. It was very huge.
Sounds of flowing water reached my ears and I turned, there seemed to be a stream nearby and I moved towards it.
I saw something that stopped me in my tracks; a woman.
All I could see was her back, she was tall and gave a strong aura. She must be very powerful but for some reason, I knew she was not a wolf. She had long red curly hair, and she held a staff.
“Hi,” I whispered. She didn’t answer me. Maybe she didn't hear me.
“Uhm… Hi” I raised my voice this time, but she still didn’t answer me. I walked around her and stood in front of her. It was then I noticed she was crying.
“I’m… sorry. I… didn’t mean… to disturb you.” I stuttered in shock but she still didn’t acknowledge my presence so I waved a hand in front of her face and realized that she couldn’t see me.
It was like I was here and at the same time, not here.
I looked at the lady with more confidence knowing she couldn’t see me. I didn’t know her, but her tears broke my heart. She was so beautiful and still looked good despite her weeping face.
Finally, her tears stopped, and she cleaned her eyes.
Her eyes were shining green, and a feeling of Deja vu hit me. Like I had done this before, like I had stood and watched this woman cry, then stared into her eyes afterward.
My hands on their own reached up. I didn't stop them as they moved towards her cheeks but just before I could touch her, I heard a heavy angry growl behind me.
“GGgggrrrrr…”
I turned in fear and saw the biggest wolf I had ever seen in my life. Seeing a wolf in full form like this was a rare sight, werewolves hardly shifted completely. I couldn’t tell if it was a real wolf or a werewolf, but I was so scared. It jarred its teeth at me and growled
I took a step backward, and the red-haired lady ran towards it.
“Calm down Max, it’s just me.” She combed its fur and head with her fingers but it kept its eyes on me. It could see me. “Good boy, calm down.” Then she paused. “Tell me, what do you see?”
My legs kept moving backward like I expected it to chase me. I hit my foot against something and felt myself fall. But my body didn’t hit the ground. What?
When I opened my eyes, I was back in London, and everyone was staring at me in bailment. The Queen was looking directly into my eyes.
Had they also seen what I saw? Why do I feel so different?
“You're the chosen one,” the Queen said to me.
