The root of all loneliness.
RACHEL
What on earth?
Kora’s voice went over the roof. Was a snake in her room? Even if there was, wolves weren’t afraid of snakes for goddess’s sake.
I hurriedly dropped the clothes and put on the lights. Kora was folded up on her bed with her hands in the air.
“Why did you scream?” I asked calmly. Whatever it was, I was sure it would not make sense, Kora had no brain. That insult wasn’t meant for all blondes, just Kora, all the sense she was supposed to have had been used to whiten her hair.
“Why are you so ugly?” she retorted with her tongue out.
The door burst open and her father came out and rushing behind was his wife. Kora burst into tears.
“What’s wrong with my most beautiful cub?” her mother cooed.
I gasped in horror as she pointed at me in tears. What did I do? I hadn’t even touched her, I hadn’t even seen her before she had begun to scream.
“Why is she so scary? It was dark...” she sniffed. “Then she came in looking so ugly and scary, I thought something monstrous had entered my room.” She finished with another sniff.
Whatever her father was saying to me didn’t even enter my ear, it was probably something about me looking so ugly and moving at night.
I knew I wasn’t pretty, but was I that ugly? Did they have to constantly remind me? If I wasn’t ugly, would my life be any easier or would people find something else to hate me for? I tried my best to look very clean, was being ugly so bad, or were people just so wicked?
At this moment all I felt was loneliness, I wished someone was here to hug me, to tell me I wasn’t so ugly, I needed a hug.
Would anything change at all if I had a mate, or would he be the final snap? I would kill myself if I got any rejection at the moment.
When I returned to my room, sleep came instantly but not for long; I had my usual dream.
In this dream I was running, I felt small, like a kid about 4 or 5, I was being chased but I wasn’t afraid, someone was holding my hand.
I always had this dream quite often but I never saw who was holding my hands, all I saw was her hair, it was smooth, long, and flowing.
But something was different tonigh. Tonight, we were being chased, I wasn’t afraid but I could feel fear in the hands that held me, I could see her feet too, they were bare and bleeding, I looked at mine, the slippers I wore were bigger than my foot.
I woke up feeling broken and alone.
What if I had a family somewhere? A sister? Was she alive? Did someone out there miss me?
My heart constricted and was heavy.
I waited till it was dawn before I came out for my house chores, Kora tried teasing me but I didn’t even have the strength to feel hurt. As she got no fun from teasing me, she left me in no time.
3 Pm had never seemed so far in my life but finally it came. I ran to the restaurant not minding the pain that was hurting my back. When I got there, I saw something that had never happened in the two years we had been running the café.
The place is locked.
Where was Davina? She was usually here before 2 Pm sometimes. I couldn’t help getting scared. Was she okay? I continued walking forward, my legs knew the way to her place.
I closed my eyes and prayed to the moon goddess, hoping and praying she was okay. I won’t be able to bear it if anything happened to Davina.
Everything seemed odd today, There was a very strange expensive-looking car in front of Davina’s house.
Was someone here to take her away? A distant family? I had not known anything about this, all I knew was the people coming from London, maybe they were around. My mind came down a little.
But the moment I got into the house; I saw my friend in the arms of a man. I had never seen him before. She was grinning ear to ear. It clicked immediately.
My prediction was right. Davina had met her Mate.
I almost went back outside not to interrupt them but Davina had already seen me.
“Rachel!” She called.
I smiled at her. “The Café was closed so I was worried about you.”
“I wanted to call you but you have no phone.” She said smiling, her eyes twinkling. She was happy, I could tell, she might have acted strong without a mate but finally, she got one and I could see the difference.
She looked so happy.
There were three men and Davina’s father, we excused ourselves from them and Davina took me up to her room,
“I want to hear everything.” I probed the moment the door closed. Davina first turned shy and twisted a lock of her hair around her fingers with a small smile on her face.
“Well, yesterday… I told you we were expecting visitors from London, right?”
“Yes,” I was in a hurry for her to continue.
“They came a bit earlier than planned.”
That explained a little, “And the guy you couldn’t let go of?” I started for her
“Turned out to be my mate!” she finished. She jumped off the bed as she said it.
“I’m so happy for you Davina, finally.” I was truly happy for her, she deserved it.
“He’s so sweet, kind, and handsome,” she said dreamily before she brought her voice down. “He’s rich too.”
“What’s his name?” I asked.
“Raymond. Even the name is handsome,” Davina cooed in a baby voice.
I used to think Davina wasn’t the cooing, baby girl kind of girl, she always acted mature but knew when to be fun. It was surprising to see my bestie swooning over a guy. Wonders of having a mate.
Like she read my thoughts, her face turned serious. “I have good news and bad news.”
Why couldn’t a day just go perfectly well without trouble or problems?
“About you or me?”
“You.”
I’m starting to believe I’ve been cursed.
