When the Zodiacs finally caught up to the Bougainville, already moving out toward the Pacific, Captain Williams lowered the well deck. Eva was pleased to see that the inflatable pools had been repaired, and that Marines were now refilling them with fresh seawater.
The dolphins were returned to the hold, and as soon as the ship’s doctor was available, he inserted a chest tube into Finn. He complimented the work Eva and the medic had done earlier. “You saved his life,” he said.
He seemed sad, though. Eva understood. He was mourning the lives of those he couldn’t save that day.
