Nineteen Monday, May 23 Pearl Harbor, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i Don’t do your best this time, girl, Eva thought. But she had no way of communicating that to the dolphin. Eva stood on the walkway of her dolphins’ temporary enclosure at Pearl Harbor, looking down at Taffy, who was about to compete against AUVs—autonomous underwater vehicles—in a Navy sea-mine-finding exercise. The old dolphin was now back to being the star in Eva’s show—but this show was one neither of them had signed up for. Eva had to find a way to keep the Navy from deciding to keep her dolphins. Reactivating them for these exercises was all Eva could tolerate. Then she would have to get them back home. Clearly, the old dolphin wasn’t happy with this current venue.
