Chapter 3: The Mark That Binds

732 Words
Lilah barely made it back to her apartment before her legs gave out beneath her. She collapsed onto her couch, gasping for breath, her trembling fingers clutching the small, black coin he had given her. Her palm still burned where he had pressed it against her skin, but when she turned her hand over, there was no wound. No scar. Only a faint shimmer, like the ghost of something powerful lingering beneath her flesh. Because now, you belong to me. His words haunted her. She had no idea who he was or what he had done to her, but deep down, she knew one thing for certain—she would never be the same again. She curled into herself, trying to convince her heart to stop racing. It was just a bad night. A nightmare. She’d wake up tomorrow and pretend none of this happened. But sleep did not come easily. When she finally drifted off, her dreams were filled with shadows. And glowing crimson eyes watching her from the darkness. --- The next morning, Lilah tried to go about her day as usual. She took the subway to work, made herself a strong cup of coffee, and buried herself in books at the small independent bookstore where she worked. But something was wrong. Every time she looked at someone, she saw... flickers. Shadows curling around the edges of their figures, wisps of darkness that weren’t really there. And worse—some of them noticed her. She caught one man staring at her too long, his pupils shifting into slits before he looked away. A woman whispered something in a language Lilah didn’t recognize. The city felt different now, like a veil had been lifted, revealing something monstrous beneath. She gripped the counter, breathing hard. What the hell is happening to me? Then, just as she was beginning to think she was losing her mind, the door to the bookstore opened. And he walked in. Damien. She didn’t know his name, but she knew it was him the moment she saw him. The predator from the alley. The man with shadows in his veins. He was dressed differently today—dark slacks, a fitted black shirt with the sleeves rolled up, exposing strong forearms. He looked like sin incarnate, effortlessly confident, dangerous in a way that made her stomach twist. His crimson eyes locked onto her instantly. Lilah’s breath caught. He strode toward the counter, his movements fluid, purposeful. The air in the shop seemed to shift, growing heavier with his presence. He stopped directly in front of her. Close enough that she could smell him—something rich and dark, like smoke and spice. Lilah swallowed hard. “What are you doing here?” His lips curved into a slow, wicked smirk. “Checking on my mark.” Her pulse pounded. “I don’t belong to you.” Something flashed in his gaze—something sharp and unreadable. “Don’t you?” he murmured, leaning in just enough to send a shiver down her spine. Lilah clenched her fists. “I don’t even know who you are.” He tilted his head. “I suppose introductions are in order.” He lifted a hand, brushing a strand of her hair behind her ear. The touch was featherlight, but it sent electricity sparking through her body. “My name is Damien Vael.” His voice was silk and steel. “And you, Lilah, are now part of my world.” Her heart stuttered. “I don’t want to be.” His smirk darkened, amusement laced with something deeper. “Too late.” She wanted to fight back, to tell him he had no right to mark her, but before she could, something in the air shifted. A sudden chill slithered down her spine. Damien’s expression hardened in an instant. His gaze flickered toward the entrance of the shop, his body going rigid like a predator sensing danger. Lilah followed his gaze. Two men stood just outside the bookstore, watching them. Only—they weren’t men. Their eyes glowed a sickly yellow. And their shadows stretched unnaturally long beneath the morning sun. Damien cursed under his breath. “They found you faster than I expected.” Lilah’s blood ran cold. “Who—what are they?” Damien turned back to her, his crimson eyes burning with intensity. “Your new enemies.”
