Chapter 4: The Hunt Begins

670 Words
Lilah’s breath hitched as the two men outside the bookstore stared directly at her. Their eyes, glowing with an unnatural yellow hue, sent a shiver of dread down her spine. She wasn’t imagining things. She wasn’t losing her mind. Something was hunting her. Damien exhaled sharply, his expression turning unreadable. “Stay close to me,” he murmured, his voice softer now, but edged with an undeniable command. Lilah barely had time to react before the two figures moved. No—they vanished. A blink, a flicker of darkness, and suddenly— They were inside. The air crackled with something unseen as the two creatures materialized within the shop. Their faces were stretched, unnatural, their teeth too sharp when they grinned. Lilah staggered back, slamming into the bookshelf behind her. “Damien Vael,” one of them sneered, his voice slithering through the air like smoke. “We were told to follow the scent of your magic, but it seems you've been careless.” Damien stepped in front of Lilah, shielding her with his body. His posture was relaxed, almost casual—but the energy in the room shifted. The shadows around him darkened, coiling like living things. “I don’t have time for this,” he muttered. The second creature’s grin widened. “Oh, but we have time for you.” Then they lunged. The world exploded into chaos. One of them moved faster than Lilah’s eyes could follow, reaching for her. Damien struck first. A wave of pure darkness lashed outward, slamming into the attacker like a tidal force. The creature shrieked, crashing through one of the bookshelves, sending hardcovers and splintered wood flying. The second attacker barely flinched. He was already moving, already reaching for Lilah. She couldn’t even scream. But Damien was faster. One moment, he was standing in front of her. The next, he was behind the creature, his hand closing around its throat. The air in the room dropped ten degrees. The lights flickered. And then— Damien whispered something Lilah didn’t understand. The creature stiffened, its entire body trembling violently. Dark veins spread across its skin like cracks forming in stone. It gasped, eyes rolling back— And then it disintegrated. Lilah sucked in a sharp breath, her pulse racing. The first creature, still recovering, let out an enraged snarl. “You dare—” Damien turned, eyes burning red. The shadow beneath him stretched unnaturally, swallowing the dim light in the room. His voice, when he spoke, was deep and commanding. “Run.” The creature hesitated—just for a second. Then it vanished in a blur of movement, escaping through the door and disappearing into the city. Silence followed. Lilah was still pressed against the bookshelf, her heart pounding. Her entire body trembled, her hands clutching the counter for balance. She had just seen a man kill a creature with nothing but shadows. Damien turned toward her slowly. The red glow in his eyes dimmed, but the intensity never left. “You’re coming with me.” Lilah blinked. “Excuse me?” “It’s not safe here anymore.” She shook her head, still in shock. “I—I can’t just leave—” Damien was suddenly in front of her, towering over her, his presence overwhelming. He reached out, brushing his thumb over her palm where the strange mark still shimmered against her skin. A warmth spread through her, intimate and inescapable. “You don’t understand, Lilah,” he murmured, his voice lower now, darker. “You’re mine. And now that they know it—” His gaze dipped to her lips for a fraction of a second before returning to her eyes. “—they’ll never stop hunting you.” Lilah swallowed hard. “And you think I’ll be safe with you?” His lips curved into something that was almost a smirk, but there was no amusement in it. “No, little dove.” His voice was pure sin. “You’ll never be safe again.”
