Chapter 15: A Dangerous Hunger

662 Words
The safe house was buried deep in the city’s underbelly—a forgotten sanctuary hidden between the towering steel and neon lights of the metropolis. Damien led Lilah inside, his grip firm around her wrist. The place was small, dimly lit, and smelled of aged leather and smoke. A single candle flickered on the table, casting dancing shadows along the cracked walls. Lilah’s heart was still racing. She could still feel Elias’ gaze burning into her back. Still hear the betrayal in his voice. Her oldest friend. She had hurt him. She had burned him. Lilah swallowed, her hands trembling as she pressed them against her chest. What was she becoming? Damien exhaled sharply, rubbing a hand through his dark hair. “We can’t stay here long.” Lilah forced herself to focus. “Where are we?” “An old safe house,” he muttered, pacing. “No one should be able to track us here—not yet.” Lilah’s pulse thudded in her ears. She had known she was walking into a new life when she turned away from the Order. But now, standing in the dim quiet of their temporary hideout, reality settled deep in her bones. She was on the run. From the only family she had ever known. From the only life she had ever known. Lilah pressed a hand against her forehead. “I—I don’t know how to do this.” Damien stopped pacing. For a long moment, he said nothing. Then he moved toward her, slow and deliberate, until his warmth was just a breath away. “You don’t have to,” he said quietly. Lilah blinked up at him. “What?” Damien reached for her hand, his fingers cool against her burning skin. “You don’t have to know how to do this, Lilah. You just have to survive.” Her breath hitched. The way he looked at her—intense, steady, unwavering—made something deep inside her ache. She had spent her entire life fighting alone. And now here he was. Standing beside her. Lilah’s fingers tightened around his. Something inside her cracked open—something raw and aching, something she had buried for so long she had forgotten what it felt like. The tension between them was thick, the air charged with something dangerous. Damien’s gaze flickered down to her lips. And gods help her, she wanted him to kiss her. The moment stretched, slow and electric. But before either of them could move— Pain ripped through her. Lilah gasped, stumbling backward, clutching her chest. The mark on her skin flared, burning so hot she thought it might tear her apart. Damien cursed, reaching for her. “Lilah?” “I—I don’t—” She choked on the words as the power inside her lashed out. The candle on the table burst into flames. The air crackled with golden light, twisting and writhing, untamed and hungry. Lilah couldn’t breathe. It was like something inside her was clawing to get out. Damien grabbed her shoulders. “Breathe,” he commanded. “I—I can’t,” she gasped. He didn’t hesitate. He pulled her against him—his shadows wrapping around her, swallowing her fire. The heat warred against the cold darkness, but Damien held her tight, grounding her, steadying her. Lilah shuddered against him, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The pain slowly ebbed, the fire dulling to embers beneath her skin. She was shaking. She had never lost control like that before. Damien exhaled, his breath warm against her temple. “It’s getting stronger.” Lilah nodded, swallowing hard. “I know.” Damien pulled back just enough to meet her gaze. “This power—it’s not just light, Lilah. It’s something else. Something… ancient.” A chill crept down her spine. She thought back to what Elias had said. What are you becoming? She didn’t know. But it terrified her. ---
