Chapter 12: The Power Unleashed

543 Words
Pain. It burned through Lilah’s veins, spreading outward from the glowing mark on her chest. She gasped, clutching at her skin, but the light only grew brighter. Too bright. Too hot. Damien gripped her shoulders, his crimson eyes wide with something close to fear. “Lilah, breathe. You need to—” A shockwave of energy exploded from her body. The room trembled. Windows shattered. The walls cracked under the pressure of the force surging from within her. Damien was thrown backward. Lilah’s vision blurred, her body no longer her own. She could feel something inside her unraveling, awakening. Her skin glowed with pulsing veins of golden light, her fingers trembling as the air around her vibrated. She felt like she was splitting apart. Like the power was going to consume her. No. She squeezed her eyes shut, fighting it, but the energy kept rising, an untamed storm raging inside her. She barely registered Damien moving toward her—his shadows wrapping around him as he fought against the force of her power. “Lilah,” he called, his voice sharp with urgency. “You have to control it!” “I—I can’t!” she cried out. Her body arched as another pulse of energy shot through her. The light flickered, wild and unstable. The power wanted release. The power wanted destruction. She felt the walls buckle, the ceiling groaning as the sheer force of her magic threatened to tear the building apart. Damien didn’t hesitate. He lunged, wrapping his arms around her—pulling her against him. Lilah gasped as his body pressed into hers, his touch sending a shock of cold shadows through her burning skin. The contrast was electric. Darkness and light colliding. She felt his power, deep and consuming, pulling at hers— grounding her. Lilah’s breath caught. And then, Damien kissed her. The moment their lips met, her power shattered. The light flashed—then flickered out. The energy inside her snapped back into place, like an ocean receding after a violent storm. Lilah collapsed into him, gasping. Her entire body trembled, drained from the force of what had just happened. Damien held her close, his grip firm but gentle. His breath was ragged against her ear. “That was close,” he murmured. Lilah buried her face against his chest, trying to steady her breathing. She could still feel the remnants of the power inside her, like a beast curled beneath her skin. But for now, it was quiet. “I don’t understand,” she whispered. “What’s happening to me?” Damien exhaled slowly, his fingers threading through her hair. “Your power has been locked away for years. But now, the seal is breaking.” Lilah swallowed. “And if I can’t control it?” Damien pulled back just enough to meet her gaze. His expression was unreadable, but there was something dark in his eyes. “Then you’ll be more dangerous than the Order ever feared.” The weight of his words settled deep inside her. Lilah shivered. Because for the first time, she wasn’t just afraid of the Order. She was afraid of herself. And the worst part? She didn’t know if Damien would be able to save her next time.
