Chapter one-Fate or coincidence?
CAMILLA'S POV "I prefer the lavender on you. Makes you look more professional," Selena, my best friend commented as I was torn between either going with a yellow dress or a lavender skirt and matching jacket with a white blouse beneath the jacket. "You sure?" I asked, placing both of them on my body and checking how they look on the standing mirror I had off to a corner of my room. "Yes. Now quick go change before you get late,"she said meanwhile I was still contemplating on the dress to choose. "But don't you think this colour is too casual? I mean it's my first day at the firm. I'm thinking of going with a darker colour?" I consulted once more still battling with my choice of clothing. As the saying goes, 'There's never a second chance to make a good first impression,' that's why I'm so bent on killing it. Passing the bar exam wasn't easy at all but the happiness I got afterwards was inexplicable. It can't be described through words. I was a step closer to achieving my dreams. Dreams of being an attorney. To defend people that were unjustly accused and persecuted for crimes most of them no nothing about. "Hello? Earth to Cam," Selena called out, snapping her fingers in my face and that's when I realized I might have zoned out. "Where you even listening to me?" "Huh? Sorry what were you saying?" She heaved an exasperated breath. "Nevermind. You're running late already. You want to be sanctioned on your first day?" Letting out a breath, I took the lavender dress and went to change. I stared at the mirror in front of me as I stared at my reflection. My ebony dark hair was left down in it's natural wavy curls as it cascaded down my back, almost reaching my waistline. My ocean blue orbs, almost with a touch of emerald stared back at me, reminding me of my mom. They said I was a replica of her, both in looks and in personality. I only had a picture of her, accompanied with a very faint memory of her reading me a bedtime story and singing me a lulaby. She passed. When I was just a year old. I was too young to know what exactly happened but with the little information I had about her, she died during a kidney transplant. The doctors said it was an easy surgery and she'd be healthy once she received the kidney but we got a different news after the surgery. Settling with leaving my hair up in a ponytail, I rushed out, almost screaming on top of my lungs when I saw the time. Just how long was I in there? "You're not going to work today?" I asked Selena as I put on my heels and grabbed my handbag. "I took a day off. I have to visit the kids today." "Oh okay. Send my regards to them Kay? Gotta run now! I'm so late they're probably gonna fire me before I even get the opportunity to start," I said in a hurry waving a goodbye to her before I rushed out through the door. It was a ten minute walk from our place to the bus station but I was able to reach there in half the time. "Hey! Hold on! Hey!," I yelled, trying to stop the already moving bus as I ran but to no avail. I hailed an incoming taxi. I'd rather pay the extra cash than being so late. The taxi stopped but just as I was about opening to door, I felt a hand on mine. "Hey what do you think you're doing?" I asked in shock as the male stranger opened the door and stepped in. "Hey! That's mine! I stopped it first. Get down!" I yelled at the man in the car. "I have an emergency. Just take the next one," he tapped the driver on his shoulder, signalling for him to move. "Emergency? Well you're not the only one with...," I was yelling before the taxi drove off right in my front, leaving me dumbstruck at my position. "Seriously?!" Checking my watch I was already five minutes late and the drive is at least ten minutes from here. It took me another eight minutes to hail an empty taxi after that guy stole my first one. So arrogant and disrespectful. I'm pretty sure he has never heard the word 'manners' before. The next time I see him I'll make sure to teach him how to be respectful. But in all honesty I pray our paths never cross again. Just the first encounter and I'm already planning how to murder him and get away with it. Maybe as an attorney I can find some loopholes? I rushed out of the taxi after paying him, not even bothering to collect my change as I ran inside the building, probably looking like a mad woman but looks were the last thing on my mind. I took the stairs, taking it two at a time with the heels that were already killing my feet. "I made it," I panted to myself as I stood outside the door to the office of my mentor. I rapped twice on the door, waiting for a response and silently praying not to get sanctioned by my mentor. That would leave a bad image of me on my report. I heard a faint "come in" and slightly opened the door, stepping in first before closing it behind me. "Good morning sir," I greeted the middle aged man who sat behind a desk reviewing some files. "You're late. You're thirty minutes late," he dropped the file he was going through and looked up at me. I was actually thirty three minutes late but I wasn't going to tell him that. "I'm sorry sir. I experienced some mishaps on my way here. I'm so sorry it'll never happen again," I apologized. He didn't respond for a while and went back to what he was previously reading, leaving me a nervous wreck as I thought of all the endless possible ways I'd be punished for my lateness. "I didn't accept to be a mentor to a robot. Quit standing in front of me. Your desk is over there," he said, not once glancing at me as he blindly pointed me to my desk. "Thank you sir," I showed my appreciation. "Get started on the files you have on your desk immediately," he ordered. I almost got a heart attack at the amount of files I had on my desk. Selena's words came flooding back to me when she was telling me about the two types of mentors one could get. Firstly is the kind hearted one who takes their time to teach you and gives you only a reasonable amount of work to do. While the second is the harsh one that makes you do everything. 'I think mine fell into the second category,' I thought and with a sigh I got started on my work. Authors note: Hello my dear readers and welcome to the first chapter of my new book.
