Chapter 1: Morning Adjustments
Lucy shot up straight in her bed. Delicate beads of sweat built around her forehead like a crown. The room was inky black with the widows and curtains shut. But none of their light-evading tactics did much to keep out the heat of the day. Lucy took a deep breath before pushing herself off the bed and towards the small fridge in her shared room. The side of her mouth lifted into the faintest hint of a smile when she saw her roommate had labeled all the glass bottles in the fridge by blood type. Lucy grabbed one and closed the fridge again. She glanced over at Veronika still sleeping peacefully in her bed before tiptoeing to the little microwave and heating up her drink. “This is the third night this week. You've got to do something about this, Lucy, or neither of us will get any sleep ever again," Veronika grumbled. Lucy's head spun around quickly, but it didn't look like Veronika had moved or awoken at all. She cursed herself momentarily, she thought she had been quiet enough not to wake her. “I know, I'm sorry. I don't know what to do to make it go away." Lucy shuffled back over to her bed and sat up, taking a small sip from her bottle. “Is this normal after the transition?" “I don't know. You're my first roommate. If others in our level have suffered the same issues, they didn't feel like sharing in classes," Veronika answered, lifting her arm to cover her eyes. “Maybe if I could find the vampire who turned me, I could face whatever is keeping me reliving this nightmare," Lucy mumbled, mostly to herself. “That's not a good idea. He was clearly a roamer vampire. They are out of control and not to be trusted. You're just lucky your coworker came out and stopped him in time. No, I think you should talk to Celeste. If anyone has an answer to help you overcome this, it's her." “Will you go with me to see her?" Lucy asked, hestiently. She wasn't sure why, but something about Celeste gave her a strange feeling in her stomach, like butterflies. “Sure, now quietly drink and go back to sleep." Veronika gave out one last huff before rolling over to her side. Lucy sipped carefully and tried to shake the dream from her mind and her nerves. She tried to convince herself that he might be a vicious monster, but she was now, too, and nothing could hurt her anymore. Lucy swallowed the last of her blood and set the empty bottle down beside her bed. She stared up at the ceiling, noticing just the tiniest bits of light struggling to get through their thick curtains. She closed her eyes and hoped for a dreamless sleep. *** Lucy had felt so confident the night before that with Veronika by her side talking to Celeste wouldn't be so terrifying. Now, as they sped past the other students towards the headmaster's office, Lucy almost felt dizzy with nerves. “Maybe this isn't such a good idea," Lucy mumbled, slowing down just a tad. Veronika let out a short grunt as she slowed down to match Lucy's new pace. “What do you mean? It's not like you'll be in trouble. Celeste never makes anyone feel bad for things - especially like this. You have to get these nightmares under control." “I know, I know.... It's just this seems a bit… silly. I'm sure I can get these under control on my own," Lucy tried to argue. Veronika tossed her an unsympathetic smile before grabbing Lucy's hand and speeding up the pace again towards the headmaster's office. Lucy put up no more fight and let Veronika drag her along down the halls while ignoring the strange looks from fellow classmates. She looked around and tried to recognize anyone in this new school of hers, but everyone else's face still felt like a strange blur. Veronika knocked harshly on the office door, abruptly snapping Lucy out of her daze. She tried to swallow her nervous energy and straighten her hair out a bit. She was starting to feel like drinking that last bottle of AB positive at lunch was a bad idea. It seemed to be turned strangely in her stomach. “Hello, how can I help you two ladies?" Celeste asked in a wispy voice. Her dress was a deep, plum purple today. The hallway lights seemed to bounce like little streaks of glitter off of her necklace. Lucy swallowed hard. “Lucy is having a difficult time adjusting. She wants to talk to you about it," Veronika practically shouted as she shoved Lucy forward. “Of course, I'm more than happy to help, come on in." Celeste started to walk back into her office, leaving the door open for Lucy to follow. Lucy turned around and shot Veronika a glare. “I'm doing this because I'm your friend, and if you don't stop waking me up during the day, I'm going to kill you. Good luck!" Without another word, Veronika skipped off, leaving Lucy alone with Celeste.
