CHAPTER 1
Evelyn Carter squared her shoulders, straightened her blazer sleeves, and inhaled deeply before entering Sterling Enterprises' enormous glass skyscraper. She was aware of the sharp contrast between the shiny, cutting-edge skyscraper and her little charitable office. The place's silent efficiency, marble flooring, and polished chrome accents all suggested a world based on unfathomable money, power, and control. This was not the place for her. Nevertheless, here she was. As she walked up to the receptionist, who hardly gave her a look, her heels clicked against the floor. "Evelyn Carter. I have a meeting with Mr. Sterling." The woman arched a perfectly sculpted brow before checking her computer. "Mr. Sterling is expecting you. Take the private elevator to the top floor." Evelyn swallowed her nerves. Protecting the organization that had given her a second start at life, she had fought for The Haven Foundation for years. And now a man who viewed it as only another acquisition threatened to consume it whole. Watching the numbers rise till they reached the top, she entered the elevator. She opened the doors to find an office bigger than her flat, with floor-to-ceiling windows that provided a stunning view of the city of New York. But it was the man behind the slick black desk, not the view, that silenced her. Damien Sterling. He was tall, absurdly broad-shouldered, and wearing a suit that had been custom-tailored, likely costing more than The Haven's whole monthly budget. He looked just like she remembered from the articles and pictures. But she felt imprisoned by his eyes. Cold, calculating, and completely unreadable. "Miss Carter." His voice was smooth, deep, and devoid of warmth. "Have a seat." Evelyn resisted being threatened. Crossing her legs with purposeful ease, she crossed the office and lowered herself into the soft chair across from him. "Mr. Sterling, I'll get right to the point. The Haven is not for sale." A flicker of amusement crossed his features, gone as quickly as it appeared. "Everything is for sale, Miss Carter. The question is whether the price is right." "Not this time." She met his gaze head-on. "The Haven isn't just a foundation. For hundreds of kids who have nowhere else to go, it offers a home. Selling it to you would mean losing everything it stands for." He leaned back, steepling his fingers. "And yet, you’re here. Which means you know that refusing me isn’t an option." Her stomach twisted. He wasn’t wrong. The Haven was on the verge of dissolution after their largest benefactor abruptly stopped contributing. They would have to close their doors if they couldn't find new funding quickly. And Damien Sterling, with his endless wealth and influence, held the one thing she desperately needed. "I’m willing to negotiate," she admitted, forcing herself to remain composed. "But on my terms." He grinned, and she briefly pondered whether he was taking pleasure in seeing her fight against the odds. "Let’s hear them." She inhaled sharply. "A partnership. You can invest in The Haven, but you won’t own it. You’ll have no control over its operations or decisions." He chuckled, the sound rich and condescending. "So you want my money but none of my influence? That’s not how business works, Miss Carter." She bristled. "This isn’t just business." "To me, everything is business." Silence stretched between them, thick with tension. Evelyn was aware that she was treading carefully. She couldn't afford to let him set the conditions, but she needed his assistance. And Damien Sterling was a man who didn’t compromise. Finally, he exhaled, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket. "I have a counteroffer. You’ll get my funding, but in return, you’ll work directly with me for the next six months. You’ll oversee the transition, and I’ll have a say in major financial decisions." Her breath caught. Six months? Working under the same roof as him? He leaned down, his voice a low murmur. "That’s the only deal I’m offering. Take it or walk away." Evelyn clenched her fists beneath the table. If she said no, The Haven would collapse. She would be entering a world where Damien Sterling made all the decisions if she accepted. She had no other option. Lifting her chin, she answered, "Fine." "You have a deal." Suddenly, she entered the lion's lair without any warning. Damien insisted on sending her a sleek black town vehicle, and Evelyn sat in the back seat. Each page of the legal contract, which detailed their six-month arrangement in careful detail, seemed heavier than it should have. Damien Sterling didn’t just want to fund The Haven—he wanted control, even if he didn’t phrase it that way. The worst part would be that she would be expected to be available to him at all times, participate in significant financial decisions, and provide regular success reports. She whispered to herself, "This is crazy," as she gazed out the window at the hazy city lights. Her cell rang. A message from her best friend, Rachel: How’s the devil treating you? Still breathing? Evelyn smirked, typing back, Barely. If I disappear, check Sterling’s penthouse. Rachel’s response was instant: Noted. I’ll avenge you. The limousine rolled to a stop in front of a posh high-rise that exuded exclusivity and riches before she could react. She inhaled deeply before leaving. Inside, Damien was waiting. He was leaning against his desk, tie slightly loosened, his piercing gaze unreadable as he gestured to the contract in her hands. “Have you read through everything?” he asked, his voice deceptively calm. “Yes,” she said, gripping the pages. “It’s excessive.” His lips quirked. “It’s thorough.” “It’s controlling.” Damien pushed off the desk, closing the space between them. “You want my money, Miss Carter? Then you play by my rules.” She lifted her chin, refusing to cower. “Fine. But I have rules too.” His eyes gleamed with something dangerously close to amusement. “This should be interesting.” He picked up a pen, offering it to her. “Sign.” Evelyn hesitated for only a moment before taking the pen and pressing it to the paper. The moment she finished, Damien took the contract, skimming the pages with a satisfied smirk. “Welcome to my world, Miss Carter.” Evelyn exhaled slowly, knowing she had just made a deal with the devil himself.
