Jen's POV
Ugh. Why am I even here?
You know, it's really not easy being a human. Even more so when everyone you've ever known is so far from it.
Yeah, that's right. I was born of Lycan and Werewolf parents. Funny isn't it?
Usually, and I'm just saying here, when you're born from such a strong supernatural couple, you too are supposed to be supernatural.
And yet, just like everything in my pathetically boring existence, I am completely normal.
Well, I guess I wouldn't say completely. I have to give myself some credit. I am the first human to have ever been born in the pack in the last century. So I guess I must be special in That way.
Ugh. What am I even saying? It sucks to have to watch all of your friends grow up and shift, develop super cool fighting skills and be able to link and communicate with each other through the power of thought.
I mean, come on, who wouldn't want that? I sure did! I still do... But still, here I am, sitting at my perfectly ordinary desk, in my perfectly ordinary office, in my perfectly ordinary human world.
I had had hope for some time. At the age of four they were sure that I was only a late bloomer, but by the time I was ten, they all started to realize, my parents included, that something was terribly wrong.
Oh, and did I mention? My parents are Alphas. Well, my dad Jason is. My mother is his Luna. They met and mated when they were very young. She a Lycan and he an Alpha Werewolf from a Northern pack. So you must understand just how disappointing it was to find out that their only daughter had no mystical powers. The rest of the pack sure didn't hold back.
My friends tried comforting me for a while, but when their training started to begin and their pack responsibilities started getting in the way, we all drifted apart.
That was when I realised I no longer could live in the pack. I couldn't train, I couldn't shift, I contributed absolutely nothing and when an enemy pack would find itself on our way, I had to be protected at all cost, putting everyone in danger without the slightest chance of helping.
After a while, I saw how much this weighed on all of them. I was so defenseless, so fragile and weak. It stressed them out more than I can say. And I could feel the weight of their worry bearing upon me. It was too much.
Every time they had to worry that something terrible was going to happen to me, holding back their full strength just so they could protect me... It hurt. It really did.
I was a burden to my pack. No, not my pack, I'm not a werewolf. I guess I was a burden to the people I really cared about.
So I decided to leave and go study economics in a human city.
Initially, my parents were against it, but after they realised that no one was protesting except for them, they had to admit that it was probably for the best. Besides, it's not like I belonged there anyway. There's a reason that humans and supernatural beings don't mix. They live different lives, the humans oblivious to anything supernatural and the werewolves and Lycans fighting each other and other packs.
So it was only natural that I would be forced to leave and live the life that I suppose I was destined to live as an accountant in a dusty old office in a big noisy city.
Fun. Yay.
"Hey, big boss man is on his way. He better not see you yawning!"
My colleague Doreen, oh gosh what a terrible name, poked at my shoulder while I was wondering how to wither my existence away through the power of boredom, warning me that our terribly fat, short and stocky boss was on his way to reprimand someone for the thousandth time that day.
He seemed to thoroughly enjoy scolding anyone that made even the slightest error. And by slightest I also mean closing an eyelid at the wrong time. Gosh, we all hated his guts.
"Miss Forthlife! Yawning again I see! "
Ugh. His voice. Full of meaness and hatred. Man, I really wished I could just leave. Why did I even choose to study economy? I don't even like economy! WHY ECONOMY?
"This is the sixth time I've found you yawning this morning and it's also the sixth time I've reprimanded you. "
He stared at me through his small round spectacles, the only thing hiding his small black bug eyes.
Okay, so let's just say I don't really abide by his rules okay? I get bored real fast and he's terrified to fire anyone anyway, so most of the time I just don't care.
"Well, what do you have to say for yourself? "
Still staring, a cockish smile upon his face, he lowered himself to my level. I could almost see the garlic cloves that he ate for lunch. They were taking form through his breath.
"I'm dying for a turkey sub? "
Okay, so I might push his buttons more than I probably should, but cut me some slack! I should shifting and running with my werewolf buddies just about now, not working at a dead end job with no other life prospects! I mean I can't even Mate for Pete sakes!
Gosh, I shouldn't have thought about that. that's what hurts the most.
To the supernaturals, mating is finding a life partner and dedicating your entire existence to them. You don't get to choose your mate. It just happens and its like no other feeling in the world.
Of course, I wouldnt know that cause I'm a freaking human, but okay.
My boss started sweating beads of rage, making his glasses slide down the tip of his awkwardly pointed nose.
"Careful, miss Forthlife, or you might find yourself on the streets very soon. "
I clasped my hands together and smiled hopefully.
"You promise? "
Puffing with anger, the big boss man left, my colleagues chuckles following him all the way.
Doreen turned to me once again.
"You know, if you keep it up, he will fire you one day. "
Turning back to my work, I sighed.
"Oh gosh, I wish. I don't think I can keep this up for much longer. "
After work, I decided to go by my favorite sandwich shop and finally get that turkey sub I was desperately craving all day. They put extra mustard and that sounded just disgusting enough to cheer me up.
As I walked down the sidewalk, pondering on my terrible existence, suddenly I came to a halt.
Out of nowhere I smelt something amazing. Something I had never smelt before. It was so sweet, so intoxicating I had the urge to find out where it was coming from right away. I need whatever made that smell, I craved it.
What on earth is that?
I turned back and forth unable to find the source of the delicious profume. There were no bakeries, no rotisseries for another few blocks... What it sweet? Savoury? I just couldn't put my finger on it, until suddenly, the smell seemed to be becoming stronger as though it was coming to me.
That's a weird thought.
And yet, I couldn't help but think it was true.
And then, out of nowhere, I saw this man standing a few steps away from me.
He was much different from any other man I had ever seen. He wasn't extremely tall, but I could tell he was powerful just by looking at him.
Oh, and another thing. He was gorgeous. Like a mythological Greek demigod, with dark hair and cold blue eyes. And he was staring at me. That handsome demigod was staring straight at me.
I didn't even have the time to blink. Suddenly, he was standing right In front of me, growling, a dark look in his eyes and I became immediately aware of the fact that he was the one driving crazy with his scent. But what was happening? I didn't understand. I had heard about things like this happening before, but not in the human world. Only in the pack.
After only a few seconds, I found myself wrapped in this stranger's arms, his head buried in my neck as his sniffed me, growling.
All of a sudden he looked back up to me with an even darker look in his eyes.
"MINE." He snarled. And just like that he gave me the most passionate and intoxicating kiss I had ever had in my entire life.
