Chapter1
KARA’S POV
“Murderer! Kara, get over here now!” I heard my mate’s voice, Fenris, the Alpha’s son, yell out, and my hand paused on the doorknob. I was too frightened to go in.
Today was my birthday, and Fenris always looked for a way to humiliate me on that day—to tell me I was worthless, that my parents should never have given birth to me, to remind me I had ruined his life by becoming his mate, and that he would ruin mine.
I did not ask for any of this. I did not ask to be an orphaned omega, nor did I ask to be his mate. But ever since Fenris found out I was his mate, he started abusing me, trying to force me to reject him. I would have, but then his father, the kind Alpha Martin—frankly, the only one who has ever shown me kindness—asked me to stay. According to Alpha Martin, I have an inherent goodness that can thaw the cold heart of his son.
Fenris himself could not reject me because his father warned him that if he did, he would disinherit Fenris, and Fenris would no longer be the future Alpha. This only made Fenris blame me more for turning his father against him.
So, I stayed, for our Alpha’s sake, who is like a father to me. But Fenris’ behavior only worsened, especially since he found out I was pregnant.
“Kara!” he shouted again, banging the door open. I stumbled backward, my hand on my belly to protect it.
With fear, I looked up at him, waiting for his usual abuse, but I wasn’t ready for what he said next.
“You murderer! Did you think I would let you go scot-free?” he shouted. I could see the anger blazing from his eyes, and it was not a pretty sight.
“Fenris… I don’t know what you mean,” I stammered. He had called me many names in the past, but he had never called me a murderer.
Fenris laughed harshly. “Save your dumb pretense for someone who would believe you. I’m not my father, whom you can deceive with fake innocence.” Before I could even understand what he was saying, he grabbed me and pushed me into the main living area.
There was an acrid smell of rust—no, blood. Then I saw it. There, in the middle of the room, lay Alpha Martin, the only man who had ever played a fatherly role in my life, shielding me from Fenris’ cruelty.
I let out a shrill scream, tears in my eyes, as I rushed forward. No! He could not be dead. There had to be something that could be done for him!
I knelt by his body, not caring that my white birthday dress was soaking up the blood that had spilled on the floor.
His body was badly cut up, and there was a silver knife still stuck in his chest. I pulled it out and flung it aside.
“Alpha Martin! Alpha Martin, please open your eyes. You cannot die now, please,” I sobbed, but his body remained lifeless in my arms. My eyes darted to Fenris, who stood behind me, watching me with anger and suspicion. “Do something, Fenris! Call a healer. We can’t let Alpha Martin die!”
Fenris laughed harshly and yanked me away from his father. “He’s dead, Kara! But then, you probably already know. Save your stupid pretense. My father is dead now; you don’t have to keep pretending. I would never believe your lies.”
I just kept sobbing. I could hardly wrap my head around the fact that my only ally in this harsh world was dead. What was worse, Fenris, my mate, was accusing me of murder.
“Fenris,” I whispered in a broken voice. “I know you hate me, but ask yourself this: why would I want to kill the Alpha, when he has been so kind to me? Please, let’s still take him to a healer. Maybe a healer can help him.”
Fenris shook his head. “You must think I’m a fool, don’t you? Only yesterday, I caught you discussing with him what silver does to werewolves, even Alphas, and today, I find him dead with that very same silver knife. Save your crocodile tears.” He raised his voice. “Guards!”
The guards came flooding in immediately, ready to do his bidding.
“This orphaned omega with no strong family ties, who has been trying to claw her way into my family, just killed the Alpha. Arrest her!”
As the guards approached me, I felt a sharp, biting pain in my stomach. I held my pregnant belly as I cried out, my eyes darting to Fenris. “Fenris! Something is wrong… the baby!”
The pain continued to worsen, feeling like what older women told me labor pains felt like, but that couldn’t be possible. I was only four months pregnant.
Fenris shook his head in anger. He walked up to me, grabbed my arm, hurting me. “Even now, you’re still lying and scheming,” he snarled. “I don’t believe a single word you say.” He turned to the guards. “If she is still here by the time I blink my eyes, I will have you all banished. Take my father’s murderer and lock her up in the public dungeon. I want everyone to see her for the lying, murderous schemer she is. Anyone who wants to throw things at her has my permission.”
His hurtful words cut like a sharp sword through my heart as the pain In my belly increased. At that moment, all I could think of was my baby. “Fenris, I’m not lying… Fenris, please listen to me for the baby’s sake,” I pleaded as the guards dragged me out.
“Wait!” Fenris shouted to the guards, and I felt a surge of hope as he turned to me, but the smile on his face was cold and cruel. “I, Fenris Kane, the new Alpha of the Moonbane Pack, reject you, Kara Stanis, as my mate.”
I bent my head and let the tears flow freely. “I, Kara Stanis, accept your rejection.”
