01. He’s The One, My Mate
LYRA’S POV
A knock on the door disturbed my sleep. I opened my eyes, realizing it was still the middle of the night. “Who could be coming at this hour?” I mumbled as I got out of bed.
The knocking grew more impatient with every passing second, urging me to hurry to the door. It creaked open, only for a man to barge in before I could speak.
My eyes widened when I realized who it was. Alpha Drey.
“Alpha Drey, what are you doing here?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
Ignoring my question, Drey grumbled, “What took you so long? The Beta on patrol almost caught me.”
I swallowed hard. “I’m sorry. I was too exhausted... I must’ve fallen asleep,” I whispered.
Today’s chores had worn me out more than usual. Washing clothes, doing dishes, and cleaning multiple rooms in the packhouse were no small tasks for one person.
But I couldn’t complain. As the weakest wolf in the pack, I was still lucky not to be cast out and left to survive as a rogue.
I felt Drey’s eyes trail over my body from head to toe, his intense gaze made me uncomfortable. “You’re still f*****g beautiful, even when you’re dead tired, Lyra,” he said in a low, suggestive tone.
A warning bell rang in my head, and I instinctively stepped back—but he was too fast.
He reached out and grabbed my wrist, preventing me from escaping. “Where do you think you’re going, Lyra? You should treat your guest properly.”
“Let me go!” I yanked my hand with all my strength. “Alpha Drey, you can’t do this,” I said quietly, terrified.
A low growl echoed in my mind. It was Selene, my wolf. ‘Get rid of him, Lyra. Don’t let him lay a hand on you.’
“Leave, or I’ll scream!” I threatened, backing away until I hit the wall behind me.
Drey smirked. “You won’t dare,” he said mockingly.
I hated that he was right. I didn’t dare to scream for help—even if I tried, it wouldn’t end how I wanted.
Drey was the younger brother of Alpha Brian, the leader of Silverclaw Pack. Even though Drey was known for his vile behaviour, Brian always protected him. He didn’t want the pack’s reputation tarnished, so he silenced any Omega who had fallen victim to Drey.
Since the moment I first joined the pack, Drey had openly shown interest in me, despite me not being his mate. He was known to sleep around with unmated Omegas—many of whom had likely been victims just like I was about to become.
But I refused to let myself be one of them.
I rushed into the kitchen and grabbed the nearest sharp object to defend myself. I held the knife up toward Drey with shaky hands as he followed me.
“You know a little cut won’t do anything to me, Lyra,” Drey sneered arrogantly. “Just give in, and stop fighting.”
“I don’t care.” My grip on the knife tightened. “I’ll still hurt you if you touch me.”
Drey’s eyes darkened. With a few quick strides, he was in front of me. He grabbed my wrist, and before I could react, he slammed my head against the kitchen wall.
Pain exploded in my skull. My vision blurred from the impact. A soft clatter echoed as the knife slipped from my hand and hit the floor.
“You think you can threaten me?” Drey hissed, furious. “Lyra, if you stop resisting, I can treat you well—as long as you become mine.”
“I would never f*****g belong to you!”
“You—!” Drey growled, enraged. He suddenly leaned down and crushed his lips against mine in a rough, forced kiss.
My breath hitched as I struggled beneath him, but his large, muscular body trapped me completely.
Tears streamed down my cheeks as I fought uselessly. I could taste blood—I didn’t know if it was from my head or my lips as he continued to kiss me violently.
When his hand began roaming over my body, panic overtook my fear. I sank my teeth into his bottom lip, biting as hard as possible.
“f**k!” Drey cursed, jerking back. “You little b***h! You’ll pay for that!” His face contorted with rage.
Suddenly, a loud commotion erupted outside, followed by terrified screams from people. Chaos was breaking out.
Drey glanced toward the door and then back at me, clearly frustrated. “Wait here. I’m not done with you yet!” he snapped, pointing a threatening finger at me.
I let out a shaky breath as I watched him disappear through the door. I didn’t know what was happening out there, but whatever it was, it saved me from Drey.
“I’m safe,” I whispered, my body sliding to the floor as tears streamed down my cheeks.
But this wasn’t the time to feel relieved. I could still hear the screams of others outside, along with the heavy sound of footsteps running back and forth.
My breathing was ragged, my hands shaking. “I have to get out of here before Alpha Drey really comes back,” I said, this time with steadfast resolve burning in my chest—I was going to escape the Silverclaw Pack.
I wiped my tears with the back of my hand, grabbed the knife from the floor, and hurried to my room to pack a few essential things. My heart pounded louder as the chaos outside grew even more intense.
‘It sounds like another pack has arrived. But… I don’t smell blood. I don’t think it’s an attack,’ Selene said in my head.
‘That’s good. If everyone’s distracted, I can slip away more easily.’
I could feel Selene’s worry for me. ‘But what if you get caught anyway?’
‘If my only choices are those two, I’d rather be caught than stay in a pack with a bastard like Drey,’ I replied earnestly, my hands busy stuffing items into my bag.
‘Both options are bad,’ Selene muttered, her voice more anxious. ‘I’m sorry I can’t help you, Lyra. If only we could shift, I’d have torn that bastard Alpha’s heart out long ago.’
I gave a small smile. My life might be a mess, but I was grateful to have Selene as my wolf. ‘Stop apologizing. This isn’t your fault. Even if you wanted to, you couldn’t do it. Alpha Brian would hunt us down if we killed his little brother.’
Selene didn’t reply. I continued, ‘Let’s just hope we don’t die anytime soon.’
But then Selene suddenly growled inside my head—a rare thing.
Then came a howl from deep within her.
‘Mate!’ she said.
One word—and my body froze. I couldn’t move for several seconds.
Then I heard it—the creak of my house door opening again. I stiffened, breath caught in my throat. I pressed my back against the wall, tightening my grip on the knife, ready to strike anyone who came close.
“Has Alpha Drey come back?” I whispered, barely audible.
In truth, I desperately hoped it was someone else. I didn’t think I could survive another encounter with Drey tonight.
‘Mate! It’s our mate, Lyra!’ Selene spoke again, her voice brimming with excitement and possessiveness.
I froze. “No way,” I breathed, hardly able to speak.
But then I caught a scent in the air and knew… that scent didn’t belong to Drey.
It was like the ocean—warm, deep, calming yet commanding, and a scent that felt like salvation.
I had never dared to hope I would meet my mate, not with my situation, not in this pack. But now, a small part of me dared to dream.
The footsteps came closer.
I held my breath and sprang from my hiding spot, thrusting the knife toward the source of the sound. But my wrist was caught in an instant—two large hands seized it with a firm grip.
I looked up.
And for a few seconds... time stopped.
He was only inches away from me. Tall, broad-shouldered, his body wrapped in a dark leather jacket. His brown hair was a bit messy, and his deep brown eyes were fixed on mine—intense, sharp, and filled with surprise.
But it wasn’t because of the knife.
It was because of me.
Because we both knew, at the exact moment.
There was a spark where his hand held my wrist. A strange thrum echoed in my chest, like my heart recognized something before my mind could catch up.
He’s the one.
My mate.
