The First Day of the Rest of My Life
It was the height of summer and the hot air smelled floral, almost honey-like as it weighed heavy in my lungs. Around me were beautifully trimmed hedges of the intricately designed gardens surrounding the ancient campus. The buzzing of the honeybees flying from one carefully planted flower to another filled the space with a calm, almost carefree atmosphere. Whilst admiring the tranquility of the gardens, it was easy to miss the hectic chatter of a thousand voices, all talking at the same time - debating, laughing, arguing, professing love. University of Grovehedge - the most prestigious university in the world. Anyone who has ever wanted to be anyone attends Grovehedge.
"This is it."
And here I stood - a nobody, a girl with no name. The quiet, mousey dork in the front row. Without millionaire parents to pay my way in, I had spent the past four years buried in books, exams, essays and tutorials. I had missed every opportunity to make friends, to socialize, and to prove that there was more to me than just my nerdy brain. However, it was high school. I didn't fit in, and so I made myself an easy target for the bullies.
"How did I get here?" shaking my head, every breath made the anxiety grow stronger. "How could I ever fit in?" the doubt overtook my brain.
"Breathe." I said to myself.
"You can do this" I breathed in.
"This is the first day of the rest of your life." I breathed out....
"Fuck."
