The hours stretched into the deepest part of the night.
The fire within Isella never truly vanished.
It ebbed.
It surged.
Again and again.
Vaelthar remained beside her through every wave.
The chair had become unbearable long ago, yet he never considered leaving.
Whenever another spasm of pain crossed her face, he instinctively reached for her.
Only then did he notice it.
His fingertips rested lightly against the inside of her wrist.
The angry crimson marks where she had clawed herself...
Were fading.
He frowned.
Impossible.
He looked more closely.
The skin beneath his hand no longer looked inflamed. The redness softened little by little, as though drawn away by the contact itself.
Slowly, he moved his hand to another scratch along her forearm.
Again...
The same thing happened.
The burn eased.
The swollen skin cooled.
"What are you...?"
he whispered.
Not to her.
To whatever force lay sleeping beneath her skin.
He had witnessed miracles.
Ancient magic.
Divine intervention.
Nothing resembled this.
His touch should have done nothing.
Yet somehow...
It soothed her.
The bed was vast enough for several people.
After a long moment of hesitation, Vaelthar removed his boots and settled carefully atop the blankets beside her.
Not because he sought comfort.
Because every time his hand drifted away, the heat beneath her skin slowly returned.
He slipped off the second glove.
For the first time in longer than he could remember, both of his bare hands touched another living soul.
He intertwined his fingers with hers.
Her hand tightened instinctively around his.
Almost immediately, the frantic tension left her body.
Her breathing slowed.
The painful lines etched across her brow softened.
The unbearable heat surrounding her diminished until it became something almost... gentle.
Vaelthar let out a quiet breath.
"There you are."
He had no explanation.
He no longer cared.
If remaining beside her eased her suffering, then he would remain.
The fire crackled softly in the hearth.
Outside, crimson moonlight gave way to the pale glow of morning.
Sometime before dawn...
The immortal Sovereign of the Abyss finally fell asleep.
Still holding her hand.
He woke to warmth.
Not the unbearable inferno from the night before.
A different warmth.
Comfortable.
Peaceful.
He opened his eyes slowly.
Isella had moved during the night.
She now rested against his chest, one arm loosely draped across him as though she had unconsciously sought the nearest source of comfort.
Her fingers still held his hand.
Her breathing was slow and even.
The fever had broken.
He studied her quietly.
Colour had returned to her cheeks.
The tightness in her expression had disappeared.
Only a faint warmth remained beneath her skin.
Manageable.
Human.
Relief settled over him so profoundly that he had to close his eyes for a brief moment.
He had almost lost her.
The thought alone was enough to make his chest tighten.
Carefully, so as not to wake her, he brushed another loose strand of chestnut hair from her face.
Morning light caught upon her features.
She looked...
Peaceful.
Far too peaceful for someone who had endured such agony only hours before.
A small smile—so slight it barely existed—found its way onto his lips.
"You frightened me."
His voice was scarcely more than breath.
He leaned down almost without thinking.
His lips brushed gently against her forehead.
A feather-light kiss.
Nothing more.
Isella stirred.
Somewhere between dreaming and waking, she felt warmth.
Safety.
A familiar scent of cedar and cool stone.
For one blissful moment she believed she was still asleep.
Her eyelids fluttered open.
The world came slowly into focus.
A dark canopy.
A room she didn't recognise.
Then...
Crimson eyes.
She blinked.
Vaelthar.
He was closer than she'd ever seen him.
Close enough that she could make out the faint silver flecks hidden within his irises.
For several heartbeats neither of them spoke.
Memories returned in fragments.
The unbearable heat.
The pain.
His voice calling her name.
She looked down.
Their hands were still intertwined.
Heat rushed to her face—not the mysterious fire from the night before, but a very ordinary blush.
Her gaze drifted upward again.
To his face.
Then, almost despite herself...
To his lips.
A strange stillness settled over her mind.
She didn't think.
She didn't question.
She simply moved.
Slowly, she closed the small distance between them.
Her lips met his.
The kiss was soft.
Brief.
Tentative.
More instinct than intention.
The world seemed to stop.
Vaelthar froze.
For perhaps the first time in his impossibly long life...
The Sovereign of the Abyss found himself utterly incapable of thought.
Isella pulled back barely an inch.
Only then did awareness crash over her.
Her eyes widened.
"...I..."
The colour drained from her face, only to return a heartbeat later twice as fiercely.
"I..."
She could not finish the sentence.
She had kissed him.
Without permission.
Without warning.
Without even understanding why.
She stared at him in horrified silence.
Vaelthar simply looked back at her.
His expression had become wonderfully, impossibly unreadable—not because he had hidden his emotions behind centuries of discipline...
But because, for one breathtaking moment...
He had forgotten how.
