Chapter Eleven (Continued) — A Choice Made

For one suspended heartbeat, neither of them moved. Isella's eyes widened as the reality of what she had done settled over her. "I..." The apology never came. Vaelthar searched her face, looking not for permission to hope, but for regret. He found only surprise. And uncertainty. Slowly—giving her every chance to pull away—he lifted a hand to her cheek. "Isella..." His voice was softer than she had ever heard it. She didn't move. Her gaze remained fixed on his, her breathing still uneven from everything that had happened. The silence between them seemed louder than words. Then, with a tenderness that surprised even himself, Vaelthar leaned forward and kissed her once more. It was unhurried. Gentle. A question rather than a demand. His hand rested lightly against her cheek while the other found her waist, steadying her as she instinctively leaned closer. She answered the kiss without thinking, her fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt. A quiet breath escaped her as the distance between them disappeared. For the first time since they had met, the walls built by fear, duty and loneliness seemed to fall away. When they finally parted, they remained close, foreheads resting together. Neither spoke. Neither knew what to say. It was Vaelthar who finally broke the silence. "...This changes everything." There was no triumph in his voice. Only honesty. Isella searched his crimson eyes. "Do you regret it?" His answer came without hesitation. "No." He closed his eyes briefly, as though admitting the next words cost him more than facing an army. "What I regret... is that I should have realised my feelings before the world demanded I choose between them and my crown." Her expression softened. "The ball." He gave a small nod. "The council expects me to choose a future queen." "And now?" A faint, weary smile touched his lips. "Now I know that asking another woman to stand beside me would be a lie." The room fell quiet once again. Outside, the castle continued preparing for the grand celebration, unaware that within the Sovereign's private chambers, everything had already changed. Whatever lay ahead—the council, the nobles, the mystery of Elderstar, or the strange power awakening within Isella—they would no longer face it as distant king and guest. But neither of them knew what that new path would cost.
