A journey of hope and opportunity
Gabby, Gabby! I heard my mom call me. I ran quickly to meet her because I thought she was having another episode again.
"Mum, are you okay?" I asked.
"I'm fine. I just want to talk to you about something," she said.
"Okay, Mum, I'm listening."
"Gabby, I want you to stop working. You are too young to be stressing yourself all because of me."
"Mum, I'm not complaining. You know I have to work to provide food and more drugs for you. You are getting weaker by the day," I told her.
"But I'm fine now. I need you to be in school like your mates. I understand you are trying to help, but you still need to go back to school, at least," she said.
"Don't worry about me, Mother. I have already applied for a scholarship at three different schools with the help of Kim. Kim is my best friend."
"I believe one of the schools I applied to will definitely give me a scholarship, so don't worry yourself, okay?" I said.
"Alright, dear. What would I have done without you?" Mum said, hugging me.
"I will always be here for you, and I promise to make you proud."
Sorry if I forgot to introduce myself.
I'm Gabrielle, and I am 16 years old. I stay with my mum. My dad died two years ago when I was 14, but I have my mum, who is suffering from heart disease. But I promise to take care of her myself.
I also have a best friend named Kim. She has always been by my side, despite being from a rich family. But she always makes sure to help me in the little way she can because I always reject her financial help. I don't want to be a leech.
I applied for a scholarship, and I hope to be accepted at any of the schools I applied to.
I was about to go to the supermarket to pick up some groceries when I saw a mailman at my doorstep.
"Please, is this the house of Miss Gabrielle Monte?" the mailman asked.
"Yes, and I am Gabrielle Monte," I answered.
"Then I think this letter is for you," he said, giving me the letter. I took the letter, signed, and thanked him. Then I went inside to see the contents of the letter.
As I opened the envelope and brought out the letter, I saw the stamp of Brilliant High School. I knew I had been given a scholarship at Brilliant High School. I screamed and did a happy dance, making my mother come out of her room.
"Why did you scream like that? I thought you were going to the supermarket," she said tiredly.
"I'm sorry for disturbing you, Mum. I've just been given a scholarship to study at Brilliant High School," I said happily, unable to hold back my excitement.
"What!" Mum said, collecting the letter from me. Immediately she read it, I saw her eyes light up. She was also happy; I could tell from her expression. She looked up and smiled at me.
"I'm so happy for you, Gabby. You are really blessed. I wish your dad was alive to see his daughter going back to school again after two years," Mum said, with a tear in her eyes.
"Mum, stop crying. I know he would be happy, wherever he is."
"This calls for a celebration," Mum said, dragging me to the kitchen.
ERIC POV
Brrrrrh.
I woke up to the sound of my alarm. I checked the time; it was 6:00 am. Immediately, I went to the bathroom and took a shower.
I came out and went to my closet to find something to wear and settled for a white t-shirt and jeans trousers.
As I was still trying to get ready, I heard a knock on my door.
"Who's there?" I asked.
"It's me, Kira. Mom said you and Ethan should come down for breakfast," Kira said.
"Okay, I'll be down soon," I told her.
I decided to wake Ethan, who is still sleeping.
"Hey, wake up. It's time for breakfast," I said, shaking Ethan, who was still sleeping.
"I need five more minutes. I will join you guys soon," Ethan said.
"I believe you don't want to keep Mom and Dad waiting," I replied.
"I'm coming, just go. I will be right behind you," Ethan groaned.
"I think I have to call Mom. You know what she's capable of," I said.
"Fine, I'm up," he said, heading to the bathroom, I guess to wash up.
I went downstairs to the dining room and sat down.
"Eric, where is your brother?" Mom asked.
"He will be out soon," I replied.
"I hope he's not still sleeping?" she said, while setting the dishes on the table.
"No, Mom, he is not sleeping," I answered, while pressing my phone.
Dad came down from the stairs.
"You are late, honey boo," Mom said.
"I'm sorry, my love. I just had to fix something," he said, kissing Mom on her lips.
"Please, I'm here," I said, making Dad stare at me.
"So I can't kiss my wife again?" he asked.
"Not that. I'm still young, and I don't want to corrupt my mind," I pretended to shiver.
"You are not serious," Dad grinned, while Mom dished out the food for Dad, me, and Kira.
"Where's Ethan?" Mom asked again.
"I'm here," we all turned, seeing him coming down the stairs.
He sat down without greeting Mom and Dad.
"Where are your manners, young man?" Dad asked, glaring at him.
He muttered, "Oh, I'm sorry. Good morning, Dad. Good morning, Mom," Ethan greeted.
"Good morning. You should always greet your parents when you see them in the morning. I thought I taught you this, Ethan," Mom said.
"I'm sorry. I forget sometimes," he said.
"Whatever, here is your food," Mom said, passing the food to him.
"Since you guys are resuming school on Monday, your Dad and I have promised to take you all shopping to get new things for school."
"Wow, that is very thoughtful of you, Mom. I was planning on telling you and Dad because I need a new bag, shoes, and a uniform," Ethan said.
"But there's nothing wrong with your uniform and bag?" I asked.
"You know, I always get new stuff for school each session," Ethan said.
"Same here, Mom," Kira chipped in.
"Whatever, Mom. I don't need anything. I will manage the ones I have. They are still very new," I said, munching my food.
ETHAN POV
After we relaxed for some hours, Dad drove us all to the shopping mall. I got the necessary things I needed. Kira got some clothes for herself, while Eric just got a new headphone.
"Seriously, Eric? Is that all you need for the session?" I asked him.
"The last time I checked, my stuff is still very new, and I have not used some of them. So why would I bother getting more?" Eric said.
"Suit yourself," I said.
"It's time to leave," Mom announced.
We dropped the shopping bags in the trunk, and as soon as we entered, Dad drove off.
