The Thing She Saw
The rain had started just before the final bell rang. Amara pulled her backpack over her shoulder and hurried out of the school gate. Most of the students had already left, rushing home before the rain became heavier. She looked at the dark clouds above her and sighed. She hated walking home in the rain. Usually, she would take the main road, but that evening she decided to use a shorter route behind the old community building. It would save her almost fifteen minutes. She had walked halfway down the quiet road when she heard a sound. A metal door slammed. Amara stopped. She looked toward the abandoned building beside the road. The place had been empty for years. The windows were broken, and weeds covered most of the entrance. Another sound came from inside. Voices. Amara slowly stepped closer. “Are you sure nobody followed you?” a man's voice asked. “No. I checked,” another person replied. Amara's heart began beating faster. She knew she should leave, but curiosity kept her standing there. She moved behind a large tree and carefully looked through a gap in the fence. Two people stood near the entrance of the building. One of them was carrying a large black box. Amara couldn't see their faces clearly. Then one of them turned. For a second, Amara froze. The person was looking directly toward the tree. She quickly stepped backward. A branch snapped beneath her shoe. The two people went silent. “Did you hear that?” Amara's heart raced. She turned and ran. She didn't stop until she reached the main road. She kept looking behind her, but nobody followed. By the time she reached home, she was soaked. “Amara?” her mother called from the living room. “Why are you so late?” “I took the wrong road,” Amara answered, trying to sound normal. That night, she couldn't sleep. She kept thinking about the black box and the voices. Then, at exactly 11:47 p.m., her phone vibrated. Amara reached for it. There was a message from an unknown number. Forget what you saw. She stared at the screen. A second message appeared. Don't ask questions. Amara's hands went cold. Then a final message arrived. We know where you live. She looked toward her bedroom window. For several seconds, she couldn't move. Outside, beneath the streetlight, stood a dark figure. Then the figure disappeared into the darkness. Amara slowly locked her bedroom door. For the first time in her life, she realized that whatever she had seen that evening was not an accident. Someone had been hiding something. And now, somehow, Amara had become part of their secret.
