The Ice Alpha's Rules

1742 Words
Alina woke to silence. In her old pack, mornings were filled with the sounds of children playing, mothers calling out breakfast orders, and the general bustle of pack life. Here in Shadow Ridge, the silence felt oppressive, like the house itself was holding its breath. She'd barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, those strange dreams returned—flashes of silver light, ancient voices calling out her name loudly and whispering words she couldn't understand, and always that feeling of power just beyond her reach. She'd woken up three times with her hands glowing faintly, but when she blinked, the light was gone. I'm losing my mind, she thought, staring at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. ”Just one day in this place and I'm already seeing things.” A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. "Luna?" A young woman's voice called through the door. "I'm Sarah, the housekeeper. Alpha Lucien asked me to show you around today." Alina opened the door to find a girl about her own age with kind brown eyes and a nervous smile. At least someone in this place seemed friendly. "Thank you, Sarah. I'd like that." Alina tried to return the smile, even though it felt forced. "Should I... is there a particular way I should dress? As Luna, I mean?" Sarah's expression softened with understanding. "Just be yourself, Luna. The pack will respect you for who you are, not what you wear." But as they walked through the pack house, Alina noticed the stares. Pack members would nod respectfully when they saw her, but their eyes held questions. Why hadn't their Alpha marked his new mate? What did it mean for the pack's future? "The Alpha has some rules," Sarah said quietly as they toured the kitchen. "He asked me to go over them with you." Alina's stomach clenched. "Rules?" "Nothing too strict," Sarah assured her quickly. "He just... he likes his privacy. The third floor is his personal space—his office, his bedroom, and his study. Pack members aren't allowed up there without permission." "I see." Alina nodded, though inside she felt another piece of herself shrinking. Even as his wife, she was just another pack member with restricted access. "And he usually eats breakfast alone in his study while he works. But lunch and dinner, he expects you to join him and any visiting pack leaders. Luna duties," Sarah explained, then added more gently, "He's not cruel, Luna Alina. He's just... controlled. He has to be, leading a pack this size." They continued the tour—the training facilities, the pack school, the medical center. Shadow Ridge was impressive, far more organized and prosperous than her old pack. But it all felt cold and efficient rather than warm. "Luna Alina!" A cheerful voice called out as they passed the training grounds. A woman in her thirties jogged over, her face flushed from exercise. "I'm Beta Maya, Lucien's second-in-command." Finally, someone who didn't treat her like fragile glass. Maya's handshake was firm, her smile genuine. "Welcome to Shadow Ridge. I know this is all overwhelming, but you'll find your place here." Maya's expression grew more serious. "The pack needs a Luna's touch. Lucien is a strong Alpha, but he's been alone too long. He's forgotten how to be... warm." There was something in Maya's tone that made Alina look at her more closely. "You've known him long?" "Since we were children. He wasn't always so..." Maya paused, choosing her words carefully. "Let's just say leadership changed him. But I think you might be exactly what he needs, even if he doesn't realize it yet." Before Alina could ask what she meant, Maya was called away to handle a training dispute. Sarah continued the tour, but Maya's words echoed in Alina's mind. What he needs? From what she could tell, Lucien Blackthorn needed nothing and no one. Lunch was an awkward affair. Lucien sat at the beginning of the long dining table, reading reports while he ate. Alina sat to his right, picking at her salad and trying to think of something to say. "How was your tour?" he asked without looking up from his papers. "Informative. Your pack is very... organized." "Efficiency keeps us alive." He still hadn't looked at her. "Maya mentioned you'll need to be introduced to the pack officially. We'll do that at tonight's pack dinner." "Tonight?" Alina's heart raced. She wasn't ready to stand in front of hundreds of wolves and pretend to be their Luna. Finally, Lucien looked at her, and she caught a flicker of something in his dark eyes—digust? "Is there a problem?" "No, I just... what am I supposed to say? What do they expect from me?" "Be polite. Smile. Let them know you're committed to the pack's welfare." His tone was matter-of-fact, as if he were giving instructions to a employee. "It's not complicated." Heat flashed through Alina's chest—anger, finally, after a day of feeling small and unwanted. "Easy for you to say. You've been an Alpha your whole life. I've been a Luna for exactly eighteen hours, and half the pack is already whispering about why you haven't marked me." The temperature in the room seemed to drop ten degrees. Lucien's eyes went completely cold, and Alina felt her wolf whimper and try to retreat. His Alpha power pressed down on her, making it hard to breathe. "What the pack whispers about is none of your concern," he said, his voice deadly quiet. "Your job is to fulfill your duties as Luna and support the alliance between our packs. Nothing more." "Then maybe you should have married a contract instead of a person," Alina shot back, surprising herself with her boldness. For a moment, they stared at each other across the table. Lucien's jaw was tight, his hands clenched on his papers. But there was something else in his expression now—surprise, maybe, that his meek little wife had dared to challenge him. "Careful, Alina," he said finally. "You're not in your father's pack anymore. Here, respect for the Alpha isn't optional." He stood and walked out, leaving Alina alone with her racing heart and the lingering scent of his anger, dark and dangerous and oddly intoxicating. What is wrong with me? she wondered. She should be terrified of him, should be trying to make this arrangement work. Instead, she was picking fights and feeling more alive than she had in months. That evening, the pack dinner was held in the great hall, a massive room that could easily hold the three hundred wolves of Shadow Ridge. Alina wore a simple blue dress that Sarah had helped her choose, trying to look confident and Luna-like. Lucien appeared at her side just before they entered the hall, looking devastatingly handsome in a dark suit. But when he offered her his arm, his touch was purely formal. "Remember what we discussed," he murmured as they walked in together. The pack rose to their feet as they entered, the sound echoing through the hall. Alina had never seen so many wolves in one place, and the weight of their attention made her feel exposed. Lucien's introduction was brief and impersonal. "Shadow Ridge, I present your Luna, Alina Blackthorn." The use of his last name felt strange on her ears. "She comes to us from Crescent Moon pack, and I expect you to show her the same respect you show me." Polite applause filled the hall, but Alina could feel the questions in their eyes. She stepped forward, her voice stronger than she felt. "Thank you for welcoming me to Shadow Ridge. I know I have big shoes to fill, and I hope to prove myself worthy of your trust." More applause, warmer this time. She caught sight of Maya giving her an encouraging nod. But as they sat down to eat, Alina noticed something that made her blood run cold. At a table near the back of the hall sat a group of younger wolves, and one of them, a beautiful blonde with predatory eyes, was staring at Lucien with unmistakable longing. When the woman caught Alina looking, she smiled, slow and dangerous, before deliberately running her tongue across her lower lip. Sarah, sitting beside Alina, noticed her expression. "That's Veronica," she whispered. "She's been... close to the Alpha in the past." Close. The word hit Alina like a physical blow, even though she had no right to be jealous. She was nothing to Lucien but a political arrangement. What did it matter if he had lovers? But as the evening wore on, she found herself watching Veronica, who made sure to catch Lucien's eye several times during dinner. And each time, Alina felt something dark and possessive stir in her chest—something that felt dangerously like her wolf claiming what was hers. After dinner, as the pack mingled and talked, Veronica approached them with a glass of wine in her hand and a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Alpha Lucien," she purred, completely ignoring Alina. "I was hoping we could discuss the security reports from the eastern border. Tonight, perhaps?" The suggestion hung in the air, loaded with implication. Alina's hands clenched at her sides as she waited for Lucien's response. "Tomorrow will be fine, Veronica," he said coolly. "I have other matters to attend to tonight." Veronica's smile faltered slightly, but she recovered quickly. "Of course, Alpha. Tomorrow then." She finally acknowledged Alina with a cool nod. "Luna." As she walked away, her hips swaying deliberately, Alina felt heat building in her chest again—not anger this time, but something else. Something that made the air around her shimmer slightly. "Are you alright?" Lucien's voice was sharp, concerned. Alina looked down and gasped. Her hands were glowing again, faint silver light emanating from her skin. Several pack members nearby had noticed and were staring. "I... I need some air," she managed, rushing toward the exit. But she could feel Lucien's eyes on her as she fled, and for the first time since she'd arrived, she sensed genuine interest in his gaze. What is happening to me? As Alina struggles to control her awakening powers, she doesn't notice the ancient book hidden in the pack's library, a book that holds the key to her true identity. But someone else has noticed her strange abilities, and they're very interested in what the new Luna might be hiding...
